DF General Discussion / How to enforce Population Cap set for World Gen?
« on: February 16, 2019, 07:36:23 am »
Genning a medium Region with a cap set to 9000, 500 years in i find myself with 18000 historical figures alive, out and about complicating the world and slowing it down.

How can i gen a medium to large world with a small amount of historical figures?

DF Gameplay Questions / Do bolts (re-)stack now?
« on: July 18, 2018, 06:24:34 am »
I've looked at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Crossbow and http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Bolt but neither contains the information:
Are bolts collected into stacks of [whatever maximum size] now, or are we still stuck with individual bolts being hauled around and forever alone?

DF General Discussion / Largest/Longest world gen in 44.x?
« on: April 22, 2018, 09:37:57 am »
After downloading the latest versions i have noticed i am now unable to generate medium regions, and even islands, with 300 years of history.
The world generation becomes unresponsive and windows automatically throws the popup to shoot it down.

This is a pretty sad state of affairs, considering that procedural generation of not just worlds but of beings, sites, civs, beasts and wars is the strong suit of dwarf fortress i always found most interesting.

So... what do i need to actually generate a proper 1k+ year large world in this latest version?
Is it even possible?

I've tracked the process, and it never used more than 1 core, which means there is very little room for improvement from my old 3570k running at 4.4Ghz.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Anti-Fun world gen [40.19]
« on: December 07, 2014, 09:01:27 am »
I'm now generating my 4th world for 40.19. Whereever i look, silver ores, more silver ores. copper AND silver ores. Some gold ore, hooray.

Wheres the IRON? Where's the COAL? I've embarked on white shallow metal or flux stone layers every time, the sites didn't even HAVE a sedimentary layer, so that colorcode functionality is broken or removed i guess.
So i went to look over the world with dfhack instead of embarking and having fun like i used to in old versions. There's tiny islands of coal+magnetite sites in vast regions. Oh, and the aquifer sites. Lots of those fill my criteria, but WTF IS WRONG WITH THEM.

These aquifers aren't your good old pierce and gain stone buddies anymore. Instead they're fucking 15z lvls deep. That's not challenging, that's just tedious and boring. AND IT DOESNT EVEN HELP. The non-silver veins are all at the exact same z-lvl range that the aquifer is at. GG.

Can we petition toady to have DF be a little more fun again and a lot less work?
How's a new player ever supposed to like the game in this state? It was bad enough before, now they can't even do anything properly dwarven after figuring out how not to starve.

Other Games / No World of Warcraft Thread? World of Warcraft Thread!
« on: November 13, 2014, 07:53:31 am »
With the new expansion coming up, i was thinking of finally giving this game a chance.

I've pretty much been hating it since 2005, where it made half my Lineage 2 Clan quit and jump ship. It has aweful graphic quality, it's designed in a comic look appealing to kids, it has no pvp content worth mentioning compared to EVE, Lineage, UO and other games based on continuous open world with limited ressource availability to fight over.

But it's still alive, whereas Lineage and UO are not. I'm playing EVE, but it's pve content is aweful and farming doesn't feel gratifying to me without a 0.00046% chance of getting a great drop to be excited about.

While i could not find a thread (tbh i did not bother to scroll through all 16 pages the search found for "World of Warcraft"), i'm certain people here must have played it or are still playing it.
Should i get it? Can i get into it, starting now? I read there's a level 90 boost in the new expansion, but i'd rather start from scratch and experience it all. Will there be people to run those instance with, or whatever the main pve content was?

DF Modding / tilesets, invisible wooden doors (MasterShizzle)
« on: March 05, 2013, 09:53:15 am »

I'm using this for the first time at the moment, and i like the non-square tiles for a change.
Can anyone tell me where he went wrong to make wooden doors invisible ingame? They're drawn in the tileset: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#MasterShizzle

edit: to clarify: right, stone door. left,at the 2x2 rooms entrances, wood doors showns as solid black.

Not sure if this is to go into the bug tracker.

I was browsing legends checking out gods, after i randomly found out they are now involved in the world by smiting blasphemous historical figures with curses.
Well.

A vampire X is being cursed to "prowl the night in search of blood"?
a) it immediatly applies the vampire tag! - nope, i found other entries of this without vampire prefix.
b) this curse is not vampirism but something like going berserk every night
c) a vampire is cursed with vampirism

if c, i guess it should go to the tracker; demanding that vampiric historical figures are restricted to curses that actually change their current lifestyle. Vampire going were-giant eagle every full moon, anyone? :)
Anyone here with more insight than me?

DF Gameplay Questions / Question regarding the Funzone [Spoiler]
« on: January 06, 2011, 12:13:20 pm »
In my last Fort, i've been amazed to find 140 z lvls on a perfectly flat spot.
After 5 years, i've discovered Adamantine more or less accidently (by opening the second cavern at about z-24).
After digging out just 4 lvls of it, i've opened hell, without even touching the 3rd cavern layer.

So i've had hell take up at least 80 z-lvls, + 30-40 lvls of chute through the adamantine vein.
Pretty excessive if you ask me :E

Any way for flatter maps, or more relatively safe adamantine? i totally didnt expect fun this far "up" in relation to the map height.

Hi, with help of the wiki and experimenting i figured out bits of the civilian attribute mess.

As everyone probably noted, vanilla DF 31.08 will invariably turn your dwarves into obese, slow, weak, clumsy, socially inept, uncreative idiots with passing time, no matter what or how much they work.

To fix the decay the following needs to be added to .df_folder/raw/objects/creature_standard.txt below dwarf but before the next creature starts:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This can be done for running fortresses/existing worlds too, by editing it into
df_folder/data/save/region/raw/objects/creature_standard.txt

If you wish to turn of skill decay too, add this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Note that the number right after Attribute Rates is only 1/10th of the default; this is the cost to improve the attribute.
I found 500 to be exceedingly slow, possibly so slow that it's the cause of the rapid attribute decay we see in vanilla df at the moment. 50 will have your miners gain attribute increases at a speed that is (to my feeling) a bit slower than the old 40d dwarves.

So far i've had dwarves notably gain attributes by mining (strength, endurance, agility) and pumping (endurance). But none at all through other actions i've tried in the short term (but at lower improvement costs, the rate can even be set to negative!)

Enjoy.

If anyone can monitor a few of his dwarves for a longer term and see if there's a gain to toughness etc too, please do and share ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Jeweler Moods' Products
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:14:01 am »
I thought they can only make perfect gems, now i've just had one make a bloodstone barrel  :o

can they make furniture too?

12
Also, what's the aggression range of soldiers, and will they only attack if active at the time?

In my latest fort, i've had loads of kobolds just run off with nobody chasing em, and a gnome was loose in my fort, literally 10 squares away from the barracks yet nobody bothered to go get the little bugger.

DF Gameplay Questions / Syrup in the new version.
« on: April 09, 2010, 08:52:28 am »
Sooo. yea.

I would call syrup pretty liquid. (what is it listed as, extract?)

Will food containing syrup "melt" like cooked booze?
Can it be eaten raw if the above prevents cooking?

Or, in other words: any reason to make syrup at this moment rather than sugar?

DF Gameplay Questions / Subsquads - any use at the moment?
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:43:59 am »
there's direct control for squads, but not for subsquads.

Something i've been wondering about for quite some time now:
Are sub-squads of any use at the moment? As in "sub-leaders lead their sub-squads while the squad leader is busy eating/sleeping/picking flowers"?
