Why didn't they harrass the guys when they were digging into their fort?

so, ultimately, the best solution for now is to either create a LOT of stairs (can you make masterpiece stairs?  :D) or dig out only one level?

As you dig deeper, your dwaves would prefer to go down/up 2,3... more z-levels "straight" in case the tiles in the middle of the stockpile are not filled up *sigh*

DF Gameplay Questions / pathfinding/distance to items
« on: February 01, 2008, 07:15:00 am »
I just noticed my mason prefers to run all the way to the next stairs, down, back under is shop and up again to pick up stones - instead of picking stones from a stockpile just a few tiles away.

Distance does not consider the effectively walked way?

This  would explain why my dwarves keep running about for most of the day, not really doing anything...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Balancing military
« on: January 31, 2008, 09:09:00 pm »
Heh. I'm interested, too, as i just had my last fortress smashed to pieces by a horde of goblins.
My 2 squads went up to their stations behind the fortifications... goblins shot first, hit some and the rest refused to move or do anything at all while their comrades bled or suffocated to death. All the while standing around, being nailed by arrows from outside. i guess carving out less fortifications would be one first step to improve   :)

All i can add is:

When i used "soldiers can go outside", all other dwarves immediatly cancelled what they were doing, telling me that the area is forbidden to them. No waste disposal, no constructions, no refuse-hauling, no mad "grab the items of that smashed goblin"-runs.

Try that  :)

The actual chance varies depending on the map, I'd say, since I've read about a guy whose map got entirely covered with trees, as he was unable to chop fast enough...</STRONG>

No such problems for me, i've got loads of work(and home-)less woodcutters...

i guess it depends on zones, as in "heavily forested", "woodlands"...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves wont use all bins

they are set to use bins - the max amount.

How can i check if the empty bins in my furniture stock are reserved?

« on: January 30, 2008, 02:46:00 pm »
I've got a load of bins ready, but my dwarves wont use them for storing Blocks of Stone and the like. Even when i use the material, thus freeing space in the stockpile, they just get a new stone but NOT a new bin to put it in   :(

What to do?

make a pile right next to him and ONLY allow obsidian stones. He will always pick what is closest to him.

I do mine by pressing print and pasting the result into paint.

Haha. Noticed the cat bones? i just slaughtered all stray kittens... poor things, but i've already got about 40 cats and kittens with owners. Need more ideas for Cat-Pop control!

I've got 5 hunting dogs + some hunters and fishers that get me loads of meat, bones, skulls, skins, shells... might actually reduce that pack, as i usually buy any foodstuff the caravans bring. Dont see any use in the other items they carry with them, except wood and barrels to speed up storage and production.

It will take some time for them to add leather and other decorations, as i've just started adding these in and let them produce bags, too.

DF Gameplay Questions / Decoration - Limits?
« on: January 30, 2008, 07:25:00 am »
So far, with my Craftsdwarves still pretty new to the job, i've come this far: http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/4917/unbenanntqo8.jpg

Are there any limits, besides the "only one of every bone/stone/shell"-rule?
Will the description eventually start scrolling?

Oh, another question: I've got a LONG list of deceased creatures. Will they eventually disappear?

ye, sure.
create metal bins and make sure the stone stuff gets in them instead of the normal wooden ones?

I hate elves for not taking the stupid barrels.

If i could influence it in any way, i'd shoot goblins full of bolts that have pictres of dead goblins and dwarves striking down goblins on them.
