DF General Discussion / Re: The value of a human(oid) life

Yeah I missed the guy making the manslaughter and adultery mod, and the connexion it has with your post for that matter.
I blame version 50.0 for bringing this kind of degeneracy in the forums and I wish this kind of initiative would stay in the rimworld where they belong.
??
We had mermaid-harvesting long before Rimworld rolled around into the mainstream, and definitely before 50.0 showed up — what are you on about? And then there was exiling gay dwarves because they were less likely to find a partner, and for a long time the Hammerer would routinely deal fatal or near-fatal blunt trauma punishments to your dwarves for the simple offence of failing to meet a work order.

Your purism is misplaced, and made ridiculous by context.

My friend told me their cats are called Slinky and Leonard and this little bit of information makes me unreasonably happy :)

Vielleicht irgendwann  ;D

The irony is we're both really tall, so any offspring would not in any way be considered 'Dwarfy Ones.'
Hoffentlich irgendwann!

just watched Dream Scenario, I thought it was pretty terrible — it didn’t have very much emotional power and just generally kind of wasted the really interesting premise, both in dialogue, which was stilted at times, and in plot, where the character does a bunch of things but then none of them really end up mattering
they’re supposed to be a tragic downfall brought on by extraordinary circumstances but they just kinda fade into irrelevance after they’re done happening, and then never really matter to anything again

only worth watching for Nic Cage acting something out of his usual sort of role pretty well and maybe a little decent horror, or if you delight in dollops of absolutely painful awkwardness

just finished the first season of Invincible, it was really good
very rough in patches, especially at some points with the animation or dialogue, but when it hit hard, it hit really hard
my verdict so far is that the very strong emotional core and interesting plot mostly make up for certain slips or failures

A legitimate list, but I propose a different perspective:

What you list as being the biggest annoyances is one of the most endearing features of the game, IMO.  Just about every other video game gives you ultimate and total control over every aspect of your units.  Units in Dwarf Fortress treat your direct commands as 'strongly suggested'.  Most of the vaunted difficulty of this game springs from this misunderstanding of how your commands will be carried out.  Once you figure out that bit, everything else starts to fall into place.  You are not here to control the dwarves, you are here to prod them in the directions you would like them to go.  Even the message you get in Legends Mode when retiring a fort bears this out: "At [TIME] [GROUP_NAME] of [CIV_NAME] at the settlement of [FORT_NAME] regained their senses after an initial period of questionable judgment."  You, the player, are not a deity in direct control of your thoughtless minions.  You, the player, are the nagging little voice whispering in the collective ears of the dwarves, who are trying like hell just to live their lives and not succumb to the idiotic desire to build a massive magma moat around the fort, replete with self-powered pump-stack magmafalls, for the mist, and then a solid gold throne room underneath with trap doors and pumps, in case the mayor makes too many demands, and then...
I agree in part — this was highly endearing to me for my first dozen or two forts, but it eventually lost a good portion of its charm, especially when it’s for STUFF YOU HAVE TO DO RIGHT NOW, like lofty mentioned; building walls and pulling levers

I can live with the broker taking forever to go to the depot and the station command being next-to-useless but a dwarf eighty z-levels down who was just pumping magma being assigned lever-pulling is an absolute pain, especially when the lever is to pull the bridge up on the only entrance of the fort to stop goblins from getting in

edit:
by the way, lofty, I found your criticism and summary enjoyable and insightful to read, I hope you stick you around

Had such a strange set of dreams last night. Mostly centred around some horrible unpleasant sexual relationship I was having with this amorphous character that kept being and doing different unpleasant things that I didn’t like at all. It was awkward and nasty. I’m not really sure what it means. Not that it has to mean something but it was so strange. A little fucked up, too.
Had a sexual dream, last night — it wasn’t perfect, but it was more pleasant than this one, which is good, I think. Progress, healing.

stumbled on Seb Lowe’s music, whose lyricism is just excellent, I cannot overstate how good it is
very much a social issues/critique artist, if you don’t mind that sort of thing, and he does it very well, mixed in with some other more standard emotional stuff
I can’t really pin down a cohesive genre summary, but if I had to it’d go somewhere in the middle of rock

DS1 has extremely powerful blocking and stamina runs out quickly
yes, I noticed the stamina thing early on — and I quite like it, actually; managing stamina adds this extra bit of complexity and enjoyability to combat, for me; makes it just this little bit more a puzzle to solve

They made some decisions they backed away from in later games (most notably the no fast travel and stuff like the skeleton key starting item), that really gave the game a lot of flavor and made it a unique experience.
likewise I enjoy the initial lack of fast travel (and the limited access later on); it feels much less gamey than Elden Ring, where you can teleport from anywhere to virtually anywhere that you’ve been, almost any time — DS1’s requirement that you be at a Bonfire to teleport, and then can only teleport to certain places, feels a lot more authentic, as well as making new shortcuts actually meaningful, both early in the game and continuing on into it
