DF Community Games & Stories / Idea: Writing workshop
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:36:14 am »
Good evening (or very early morning) folks.

I am Jamini, author of the (somewhat semi-)successful community forts "The last dwarves in the world: Ulolgeshud", "Ulengoddom : The First Dwarven Democracy.", and "Stories of Terror and Energy: Kobold Fortress", and a participant in the Second Battle of the Gods RP.

My time in the community games section of the forums (and the community forts before this section was created) is fairly extensive, and I have a particular love for the English language. The two main things that drew me most strongly to DF were the extremely cooperative and helpful community, and Nist Akath.  I wouldn't have stayed to explore the forums much without the former, and I would not have stayed on much longer than that without the latter.

However, ever since the creation of the Community Games forum I've noticed a slight, but ever increasing, decrease in the quality of the written works here. Where before when a community game pretty much always had the equivalent of two to three soft-cover book pages worth of writing as an intro, as well as pictures, now all too often you find that an intro post consists of little more than, "I am planning to do a community fort. Here is the location. :picture: you know the drill."

While I'm not necessarily saying this is wrong, it certainly is disturbing. While the upper and middle tier quality of the works on this site have remained relitivly (and fortunatly) fairly static. The average quality of works, when you compare the number of written stories to the number of good/excellent stories has fallen considerably. This causes the main page of the community games section to become cluttered and clogged with new and fledgling stories, not only dilluting the entire pool of skill that exists currently, but also driving the higher-quality works away from the front page.

This is why I am suggesting this: A thread where people of any background, with writing of any type (including professional, if you so choose, although I do not recommend it!), can post their works and have it reviewed and critiqued relatively anonymously.

I believe such a place has the potential to improve the overall quality of the works on this site that we all enjoy spending our time at. Potentially bringing up (or out) the great writers among us who need a push in the right direction, and improving the ability of all of us as a whole.

What are your thoughts?

Bah, stupid insomnia.
I have updated and fixed most of the links, as well as added the BoTG pages. Once BoTG V rolls around I'm probably going to need to put them in their own section or something...

As always, I take suggestions still to add to the list. If you find a story, or write one, that you feel is good enough to be added to the list of legendaries feel free to mention it and I will give it a look over.

Devath, I'll read through Questionable Ethics. It's an AlanL story, so it's almost certainly of good enough quality. However, I need to check it first.

I'm going to lobby to Toady to sticky this, merely because so many people have suggested as such and we now have the capability. Please do not take this as a request to annoy or irritate our awesome host. (although he might like being bugged... terrible I know.) He is normally very quick about answering his private messages and important threads, so I know he'll be quick to give his say-so about the matter.

Much awesomeness and peace.

~Jami

P.S. w00t! 50th post!

I feel ashamed at you people. Not one person is willing to take up Kagus' mantle? We are the forumgoers of Bay12Games, and such a request by a man who has been both a leader and a guiding hand in the life of this forum should not be so lightly ignored.

Tell me now, members of the forums, do you want to see a legend such as this die out with hardly a whimper?

If not, tell me what type of adventurer you want to hear of next.

(Yes, I'm offering to take over for Kagus, if you haven't already figured that out)

Suggestions:

1. Dwarven Avenger
2. The Assassin

I probably should update this sometime soon.

I'll look into it tomorrow, after sleeping.

Thanks for the support people. ^^

As chunks of gore covered in makeup, a frilly clown suit, a rubber nose-ball, half a dozen water-squirting flowers, a banana-creme pie with whipped cream on the top, two dozen balloon animals, a tiny toy car, a pair of big floopy shoes, and a sign with the words 'Boy. That banana and chocolate-chip sandwich sure looks delicious.' written on it falls out of the sky and lands two meters, seven decimeters, five centimeters, and nine millimeters away from him.

Somewhat phased by this sudden and random occurrence, Snoopicus determines that a wizard must have done it! Keeping the sandwitch in the back of him mind (but, for some reason now armed with the knowlage that the sandwitch is not currently edible) he sets out to meet the wizard.

Along the way...

The traders have finished there visit to our village, and have begun to pack up.

15th Malachite
A trader named Len Belroksamo ran into a kobold thief at the edge of the village today. His guard dispatched the beast, but not before the little demonspawn slashed out his throat. the humans kept muttering something about "inadequet protection."

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: {Succession} The Museum remade

If we haven't captured any humans or elves from ambush parties or sieges by my next turn, I may request to use DF companion to mark a few caravan guards as hostile to complete my exhibit.

If we want to keep the museum totally vanilla, I'm also totally ok with that. I just hate to think my two empty exhibits may stay that way.

It's somewhat confusing. My posts are pretty much all in order if you link to the first one anyway.

9th Felsite

"A Nema Demuk Re!"

Rikkir and Ukat sat on the top of the depot, a malicious grin on their old wizened faces as the young elf's head snapped about and began to slink on the ground like a dog, his long nose pausing every few feet to sniff the cold ground. Behind him his coat has slipped from his frame, thick mud streaked along the once-fine red garment from a long drag through the mud. He stopped as he passed one of his companions, a narrower female slumped against the green-flecked walls. She was unresponsive, ignoring him as he brought his face a finger's width away from her breast. A soft, catlike purring came from the back of his throat as he eyed her form up and down, before he removed his left sock and shoe, placing the former upon her head and giggling inanely while the latter lay in the thick mud on the ground. Behind him, a second elven woman raced from across the enclosure and grabbed the dirty shoe shoe and placing the oversized item over her left foot before grabbing the male's other leg and collecting the second directly from the source, dumping it's owner to the ground clumsily.

"Mebit yon, Grafififi yip nu?" the male asked, his surprisingly calm voice in a sharp contrast to the wild look in his eyes as he turned his upper body around to see his captor, "Ne ip nor, IP NOR!"

The female ignored him, instead tugging free the cloak around the shoulders of the unresponsive woman. Then she turned once more and began walking the inner perimeter of the wall, counting the stones backwards in common from thirty-two.

On the far side of the enclosure two more males sat, their eyes dark and sullen as they watched the exchange. The taller of the two, a shock of black hair over a slightly chubby face with a small discolored patch under the right eye, mumbled something to the donkey over his shoulder. The animal bent it's head down as he spoke, nosing it's master's ear gently when he finished in response. His compaion hadn't said a word at all, so lost was he in meloncholy that nothing could pull him out of it.

Back outside of the depot Pete called out to the two women, his face joyful as he listened to the mad babbling of the two mad elves on the other side of the wall. He quickly climbed the ladder on the side of the building, tapping Rikkir on the shoulder to avoid startling her, "Should we open up now?"

The Priestess took a brief look into the holding pen before standing. Smoothing her trousers and adjusting the idol around her neck. Behind her Ukat did the same, her knees cracking from a long period of immobility spent watching the elves. "Yeah, let them go now and get their stuff. I'll take care of...Glacies." Pete flinched as the name was spoken, but he nodded as the clear eyes met his and decended.

With agility unfettered by her age Rikkir followed Pete down the ladder, marching away as the rest of Ulolgeshud gathered around the exit to the depot to watch, or taunt, the mad elves. Purposefully she walked down the long row of smallhouses until she reached one that had an orange glow slipping under the base of the door. As she moved the key towards the lock she heard a faint scritching. The sound of charcoal moving rapidly over a large surface. As the key clicked in the lock, the writing stopped.

Gently Rikkir leaned into the room, her voice sickeningly sweet as she peered into the dark room. "Glacies, it's time."

At first the dwarf in the room did not move. Her silhouette a black statue carved into the wall. Then, slowly, the younger dwarf walked towards the light. One hand was lifted to her eyes to ward the glare of the sun as she approached the exit. As she approached, Rikkir extended a hand, "Come child, let's go and talk now. The elves are now harmless, and we have much to discuss."

Glacies stopped short of the hand, her own falling from her eyes as she acclimated to the glare. Then she slapped aside the hand, forcefully brushing past the leader of Ulolgeshud and marching south. The crossbow on her back rattling from her anger.

14th Hematite, 1067 - Rikkir's Log

Today a caravan from Onuthpesor, The Venerable Confederacies, arrived.

I was surprised that Atir had not returned with his own group. But these humans seem amiable enough. Perhaps he was delayed, or the profit he had returned with was not great enough to warrent a return trip It is a shame, for I somewhat liked the strange man. My only wish is that nothing bad had occurred to him on his trip back home.

Glacies arrived back in town just a few hours ago and has been talking with the traders since her arrival.

If it was really line of sight, then why do creatures from an undiscovered cave river cause cancellations?

I've never had a creature from an undiscovered feature cause cancellations. And I've run many maps with cave rivers/chasms.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves in tantrums trigger cage traps?
« on: November 23, 2008, 04:46:20 pm »
Caged dwarves are still effected by hunger and thirst.

The bug where ordering a caged animal to be sold at the depot causing instant release from the cage they are in makes it very hard to sell them as well. The reason you didn't see the cage is because you have another cage of the same material/decoration status. If you want to see his specific cage hit X when you are in the build cage menu and look for a dwarf cage there. You will be able to build it and let him out, provided he is still alive.

...

Don't look at me like that, I didn't try to make a fortress where most of the dwarves were sold back to the mountainhomes at exhorberant prices. No, seriously, stop looking!

I've seen at least two forts with a magma moat by the end of year 1. Granted it's not easy, but it's doable.

The guys sticking body parts into the mouths of crocodiles/pythons deserved every bit of the pain from it. Stupidity on that scale is just begging to be punished.

I laughed very hard at the Orca jumping on the Kiack (or however you spell it), this was immediatly followed by, "Oh wow, was he ok afterwards?"

I am a terrible person for bumping my own topic.

My turn in the museum is done, I will be posting a (small) update later tonight if everything goes according to plan.
