Hey, I haven't played in 3 years either! *high five?*
I was surprised I remembered most of the key combinations for workshops and designations and stuff.

Huh, that's a lot of NC there.
Well, I'm TR on Waterson. Shoot me a friend request if you're one of the two people that fit that description.
TR for life!

I came because I love roguelikes, I stayed because of the depth and potential for creativity.
The absurd, morbid sense of humor of DF players is fun too.

DF Community Games & Stories / A Grim Bloody Fable (Story Blog)
« on: May 24, 2014, 02:02:12 am »
A long long time ago I made a Twitter account for the purpose of telling interesting Dwarf Fortress tidbits I ran into. Lately I realized that sometimes longer stories are fun to do too, so I switched my format to a Tumblr blog. And now we have:

A Grim Bloody Fable (...with an unhappy bloody end.)

A title from the world of TF2, but quite applicable to Dwarf Fortress.

My current fortress is Gorgebridged, an unfortunately unmolested fortress with an unfortunately nondescriptive name. It has nothing to do with gorges or bridges. Actually it's my first fort in about 3 years, and it's doing very well for a basic, no-stretch-goal undertaking.

But this blog will contain fortress and adventure mode stories from Numoram, the same world as this goblin civ I described earlier. Most posts will be from the normal point of view of me describing what's happening, but some will be in-character prose-like descriptions.

Follow it if you like. Or not. Whatever's okay with you.

The important goblins involved are dead, but the elf princess with a grudge is still alive. Maybe I'll go visit her. How can I see her skills in adventure mode?

I was scrolling through the history dump of a new world I genned and noticed one goblin civ had a particularly long list of law-givers. In fact, from 137 to 648 the Ticks of Idleness had a new lawgiver every single year. Determined to find out the reason for this, I went to the legends screen.

Starting in 137 they are at war with two elf civs, The Tressed Intricacy and the Young Trees. For this entire period, each of the armies were led by a single elf. Enure Valefilled and Nisa Focusskunk, respectively. In that year and every year thereafter the elf campaigns would start in the summer and last until winter, attacking and sacking the same 5 goblin fortresses. In 480 the Young Trees stopped attacking for some reason and it was only the one civ, but it was still enough to defeat the goblin capitol Mostdungeons and kill the newly-appointed law-giver each year. Some point in the middle of the attacks one of the 5 forts is destroyed, but the others remain.

In 649, the goblin Amxu Clawhell was appointed law-giver. Here was a goblin who had refined killing elves to an art. Over the 216 years of his life before his ascension he killed 2,000 elves, 500 grizzly bears, and dozens of leopards, jaguars, and other elf nasties. The customary invasion came in the first year of his reign and he personally killed 36 attackers (including two titled elves) in the battle of Mostdungeons. During this battle, one of the attackers slashed out his left cheek and he was known as Amxu Clawhell the Snarling Skull from that day onward. This year, the elves did not take the fortress. There was a truce called.

I would love to say that Amxu continued ruling the fortress unchallenged or even launched a counterattack on the elves, but that didn't happen. There was 11 years of peace when Enure Valefilled began her campaigns again. In the first battle in Mostdungeons of the renewed war, 649, Amxu was killed and eaten by an elf named Bilao Foldedleaf the Mahogany Dye of Glittering. After one year of fighting there was no more war until the present year, 1050.

What I want to know is why does this civ still exist? If it's weak enough to get conquered every year for 500+ years, why did it not get destroyed? One of their fortresses did, why not the others?

I guess the elves just didn't want to give up their tradition.

PS- Enure Valefilled's oldest son was abducted and transformed by a bleak horror in 38. His unholy descendants still live.

I was thinking that too. "He must be new. Otherwise he would have to problem offing the nobles."  :)

rampaging soldiers suddenly hitting beaches and stopping forever to admire the waves

I'm picturing a soldier holding a bloody axe, staring blankly out into the waves. A bit of drool hangs out the side of his mouth. Behind him several angry fortress guards charge over a sand dune.

It's too bad my artistic ability is not up to par with my imagination.

If I had been here on time I would have suggested friendly mobs not interfering with your 'automatically walk to nearest up/down stairs' action. I refer specifically to the waydroids.

I've come across a funny bug. You can't complete the quest step where you 'engage the baetyl' if you have no tongue.

Yeah it took a level 18 character with 150+ health and immunity to electricity to get through Golgotha. At least I got a nice gun out of it.

I guess I just had a stroke of bad luck with the apes. The character I've been playing for the past hour is one of the my best ever. He just seems to find everything he needs.  ???

Are two handed guns like shotguns and chainguns affected by Bows & Rifles skills?
