This is pretty common for me, and I was wondering, what are the objects, should cleanup be done, and can it be done manually?

This seems to happen more often when I have lots of items on the map.  I presently don't have anything needing atom smashing, and the elves just left, so there are a lot less game objects in the game presently than there could be.  This has happened with every fortress I have had, after it gets big enough.  Sometimes with diligent smashing the cleanup crash will go away and it will save normally.

I also seem to be crashing to the desktop now a few minutes after starting (on this particular save game).   I am experimenting with cancelling tasks to see if that helps any (maybe something is crapping out).  Any ideas?

Incidentally I managed to get past the crash a few minutes into starting--a forgotten beast came and I think that may have been what was triggering the crash.

Said forgotten beast turned out to be a treat.. beware its deadly dust alright... it breathed frozen and boiling ichor out in a huge cloud that blew a spearmaster into a series of obstacles, including traps, and he was wasted just as he showed up.  A second soldier died in the blast, and it wasn't even listed in the announcements or the reports!  Then a master axe dwarf showed up and chopped off the tail and head, and combat ended.

The game seems to be running OK now... I guess I just have to save more frequently to guard against ambush/beast arrivals (and potential crashes)

Life Advice / Re: air conditioning

If your computer use is disturbing others, is it from sound?  Mute it or use headphones so you can open the door.

I understand if you want privacy using your PC, but you may have to decide between that and cooler air.

In my office here, it can get plenty hot with the computers running.  I have a tower fan that oscillates.  At some points I plug in a fan and aim it OUT of the doorway.  this causes the hot air to go into the hallway.

As someone noted, turning things off when not in use is a good idea.  The computer does heat things up.  Even a monitor on power-save mode is still using power.  Shut it off when not in use and have a screen saver kick in in five minutes (to put the monitor in power save) when you are just walking away for a while.  (Note that can be annoying when watching a video).

Having speakers turned on all the time contributes to heat.  Same with AC adapters plugged in all the time.  not only are they "energy vampires" but they contribute to the heat.

If possible, make sure the AC/furnace filter is on the clean side.  you'll have better circulation with a clean filter.

The temperature in this room can change by 10F by simply powering everything off.  In the winter, I actually leave things on because it is cheaper to heat the room that way than crank up my traditional thermostat, which heats up the whole place rather than just one room.

As for the windows being sealed, I am also familiar with that situation, as a friend of mine's mother (or was it his wife?  well it has been a while but...) had severe allergies and they caulked and weatherstripped all the windows shut.  Their energy bills were horrendous with the AC always on.

Also, how many incandescent light bulbs are in the room?  Replace those with those compact flourescent bulbs... you may not like the way they light the room, but it will reduce the heat.  Incandescent bulbs literally light up because of the heat of the filament inside the bulb.  That heat has to go somewhere and is radiated out into your room.

Good!

Now turn your life around and start studying for Cisco and linux exams so you can get a well paying job and still play with text interfaces most of the day, just like DF!

I  have to tell you, tantrum mode in the data center does not go well.  For the people that own the data center, anyway.

You're right, I didn't read XP was on it and running slowly as well.

I've had bad network cards take up a lot of CPU and generally muck things up--at least back when there wasn't much CPU to take up.  If the computer has a network card, try physically removing it and letting XP detect its gone and reboot again.  For the 98, I think you might need to remove it via the device manager first and then shut down and remove it, or it may still leave some "residue".

And lastly, if both are slow and the computer is old, how is the hard drive health?  Try getting the program.. hmm motherboard monitor I think, it does a scan of the drive looking for the SMART values on it and can tell you that the disk is failing.  Some computers back then would inform you of this at bootup.

Wouldn't it be easier to throw them into a saarlac pit?

Yes, their bronze weapons are pretty decent until you manage to scrape together your own.  With whats left you can put into traps and trade the rest to your dwarfen caravan.

I would much prefer to have the ability for my baron to be wearing human leather when the human ambassador comes with a peace treaty, though.  Just because they are sentient doesn't mean I have to be civil with the corpses...

I have golden statutes of turtles, in a room with a green aquarium with a turtle in it.

Although I would have to admit I like the idea of statues of steel fists.  Now if I could only place them above the entrance way and link them to pressure plates.  That way the goblins would feel the full force of my might!  Otherwise falling statues of cows would have to do.  If only I could make a giant wooden badger...

Yet the elves continue to show up with their unwanted wooden piccolos.

But the booze... that's where it's at.

When marksdwarfs worked, I would make various outposts with fortifications as the walls.  They would span a few levels, and contained food and drink, as well as ammo.  This worked pretty well, as it would soften up anything that approached.

A small hill with a few zlevels, hollowed out, worked nicely as well, and sometimes I would be lucky enough to have them close enough together to link them with bridges and then set up a drawbridge and/or fortifications along it, so the hills worked as turrrets of sorts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine Clothing

I just hope the dungeon master doesn't bogart all the adamantine cloaks.  If so, he'll find an adamantine spike with his name on it.

How about the ability of bags of sand to act as... sandbags, usable for creating a water proof perimeter but otherwise easily destroyed?

However I do not see myself personally using this.  There is enough stone around to make a real wall.

It'd take a long time to start with a new piece of clothing and wear it out! I am pretty sure that is the case, but I was more concerned about protection.

I can do that, but if anyone else had tried, I would like to know!  In battle reports I can see that "ravenous bugblatter struck Urist, but his cave spider loin cloth deflected the blow!" Generally its a cheap beastie that this happens with.  wolves seem to be pretty good at tearing through clothing, for example--I got a named wolf who was poaching kids at one point, and their clothes did little to protect them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Adamantine Clothing
« on: May 19, 2010, 02:12:23 pm »
Aside from value, is it a good idea to bother making adamantine clothes?  It's hard enough to do the strand extraction, and I noticed that the one bit of metal cloth I made had a fabulous value.  But I wondered if it was worth the effort to make an shirt, for example, to wear under breastplate, so that the arms are protected.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine High Boots?
« on: May 19, 2010, 02:10:34 pm »
I was under the impression that high boot availability (and other armor types--like from elves, if you bothered to buy their armor) is not available depending on the temperature.

Sometimes you can trade for them if you are in the wrong spot, but not always.

You'll notice in some forts, based on location, the military lists high boots as a normal armor to equip.  If it is not available in your area, it will list them as foreign.

Shpongle?  But maybe that would be best for "Elf Fortress".  Still, you don't see the elves swilling down mushroom wine.
