DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wildlife gone?

I'm out, too.  I can catch dragonflies in traps, though.  The feeling isn't quite the same.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: loss of pet becoming a problem

Yeah, when you meet your first bronze collossus, I think that with all of those pets being turned into paste, you will end up with worse tantruming issues than if the collossus wasted a number of dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: do coins have quality levels?
« on: March 27, 2008, 12:28:00 pm »
Every year they seem to have a different design.  You might want to try minting coins out of non precious metals, but make sure you lock the room when you are done looking at them.

Coins, coins everywhere.  Your dwarves will turn into Scrooge McDuck and go swimming in them.

hey toast, if you want to up your gains, set up a dyer, and color all of  your cloth.

Later, when your clothier gets into a fey mood and goes legendary, have that guy make nothing but giant cave spider silk bags.  Masterful ones on good quality silk that are exceptionally dyed can go for thousands.

But nothing beats something like diamond studded ammo!

I think it's the carp that are ninjas!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Killing Dwarves

yeah I think the easiest way is to recruit him and give him no armor, weapons, and keep him on duty, stationed near an area where death is likely, like room filled with suddenly opening goblin cages.

It might be more fun to find out what animals/vermin he detests, get some, and release them into a locked room where he's at, then continually expose him to unsavory elements of life before putting him out of his misery.

Designate that dwarf to be a miner, and then have him mine into an underground river or pond, or magma tile.

Make him a soldier and station him on a bridge connected to a lever, and then pull the lever.

Lock him in his room.

Fill  his room with menacing spikes and connect to a lever that is pulled repeatedly.

Dig a huge cavern and collapse it on him.

Designate him as a weaver and task him with the collect silk job whenever there is a giant cave spider handy.

I am sure you can come up with others.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Artifacts...worth the cost?
« on: March 26, 2008, 02:32:00 pm »
I would like to have a dwarven curio cabinet, or a display room.  The artifacts like pine mugs should be doing more than sitting in a bin.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What else would you use a coffin for?
« on: March 26, 2008, 02:03:00 pm »
I think we should be able to use coffins as dining tables.  Embed a few gems into them and load the coffin with meat, maybe put some wheels on it for catering purposes...

ahh bottled Elf water, from the fairest of springs!

Bottled dwarf water probably would have a high mineral content.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Flux materials
« on: March 27, 2008, 12:30:00 pm »
Goblins have steel?

They had left me so much iron I didn't worry about not finding any natural sources, and then when I found magnetite, i found so much I build a wood burner, a smelter and a smith out in that area of the mountain, far away from everyone else, so the only hauling jobs would really be to bring back iron bars or finished products.

Now I have piles of narrow iron armor that I can trade away or just melt anyway (or build a bridge and smash it).

well, when I traded for pig iron when I had hopes of finding flux, I eventually just used the pig iron to make buildings and a bridge.

Yeah, that is a way to get them to rest, in peace at least.  If you come across some axe wielding goblins, you might even be able to rest in pieces.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: lag
« on: March 24, 2008, 02:02:00 pm »
Since I have a dual core, i was thinking of making a win 2000 virtual machine, or a linux one, and trying on that.  Although I expect the trade-offs involved wouldn't make for a decent experience.

Ya, dual booting could work but I like to work at the same time as I have the dwarves crawl around.

I say DF should be ported to the commodore 64.  <Insert>

One thing I haven't read, does DF run faster in win 2000 compared to XP?  How about Linux?  Has anyone compared the three?

Certainly the save games between win 2000 and xp (or vista) are compatible, but I don't know about Linux.
