DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Training Architects?
« on: March 24, 2008, 02:03:00 pm »
Well, for the sake of doing it, I sometimes make my stills out of copper, or try for steel in the kitchen, or granite (for the counter tops!) etc.

There's something wrong about it all being made out of shale!

Is their leader busy doing something, like healing is mangled arm, or eating and drinking?

Try promoting someone else to the leader of your group and attempt to set a new location for them, and see how that goes.

Make sure you kill the hammerer AFTER the next migration wave.  Otherwise, just he's being carted off to his coffin, a new one will arrive before the corpse is even cold.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Levels of agility beyond "Perfect"
« on: March 21, 2008, 04:02:00 pm »
At the very least, in a fortress running at 17fps, a perfectly agile dwarf seems to be moving about at the speed one would see dwarves running about at a 60fps fortress.

So I could make everyone perfectly agile, the game would be that much more playable, even if it WAS cheating.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: high resolution slow down?
« on: March 27, 2008, 11:09:00 pm »
yeah if you think the browser is taking up cpu time, then why don't you open up the task manager and measure it?

Computer has been up for over a week.

idle time: 323:19:10
firefox: 1:20:22
This evening's dwarf fortress: 36:22 so far.

So my web viewing for a week has taken an hour and twenty minutes of cpu time.  DF so far tonight has been 36 minutes.  I think DF is the greater processor hog, as I have probably spent more than an hour and 20 minutes reading the forums this week.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Demons

I haven't  used any of the utilities to reveal that stuff and I haven't even found a cave river or a chasm or magma or hidden fun stuff.

It still hasn't caused me to fail my obligation of accidentally causing dwarven riots and doomed fortresses, though.

it could be the quarry bushes grow inside your rock quarries.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Controlling what is brewed at a still.
« on: February 28, 2008, 12:37:00 pm »
you can do what I did, and farm lots of whip vines to the point that you have so many they wilt on the field and nearly all alcohol brewed is whip vine wine.  As long as you have dirt and grass, you can make a plot, maybe not far from the base entrance out out of the traffic area, and set the farmers to it.  In case of ambush, the entrance is not far away.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [176.38a] a wrestler has 2 caps and a hood
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:07:00 pm »
Does anyone else get irritated when you have steel caps and steel helms abound, and the guys walk around with a pig tail cap and a steel helm and will not ditch that cap ever?

dump, forbid... even when the cap wears away, I generally don't see them trying to replace it with armor.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Human Caravan Loitering
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:41:00 pm »
The last time the humans came to mine, there was one wagon that took FOREVER, it was like it was piloted by a drunk.  It slowly crawled over my paved road and finally got to the trade depot.

By the time everyone finally left the map (that same one took forever to leave) it was mid autumn, and the dwarf caravan never arrived that year.

That was also the  year I got the most heinous amount of sieges yet, from every accessible direction.  It would have been nice to have the dwarf caravan soldiers help out, but maybe they caught wind of the goblin scent and decided I could fend for myself.

Yes, I have a legendary stonecrafter child, who does what he pleases--generally harvesting and parties.  And he flashes as a legendary should.

do they have any injuries/gray body parts?  They'll stop sparring after getting that and won't ever practice again.  You'd have to make them marksdwarves to get them to shoot at the range.

When this happens, if my soldier in question is not already titled in some sort of weapon, I either put the cripple in the fortress guard or give him a crossbow if he isn't terribly slow as a result of the wound.

643
I've had that problem with arrows and bolts.  Lots of them hang in the air over whatever zlevel they were supposed to land on.  I just forbid them and forget about it... but it does start to get messy after a while!

I think that was in 33g as well..  I get raw green glass for the jeweler, but not raw clear glass.

I didn't at the time; I will have to try it so I can get that guy's hammering skill up!
