DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Obisidian Tower of Idotsus
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:12:00 pm »
Recently, I undertook a massive building project. Using 2500 stones and the resources of a local stream and magma tube, I am creating a tower made of obsidian. While the process of filling it with the appropriate materials has not yet begun, its mold is, for all purposes, done.

To construct the mold, I used a vast amount of raw obsidian quarried from beneath the surface, as well as a multitude of pumps to lift magma and water high into the air, supported by the ancillary towers on either side.

Thus far, the only thing inside is the outdoor meeting area and main entrance at the center. When the time comes to fill the cylinder, the entrance will be temporarily capped.
If you want to see the details of my work, I have uploaded a map here.
A few questions remain for myself. Once filled, should the mold be stripped away, or assimilated into the tower? Should I decorate the outside with steel statues? What say you?

Recently I've begun using a series of tunnels, but not as complicated as your idea. Basically, I have a 3-tle wide tunnel with ramps at the end that runs to the edge of the map, so caravans have an safe and easily traversable path to my fort. Inside this and close to the fort are my wall of traps. Just beyond them lie smaller tunnels I use purely to give my dwarves a swifter route outside, or across rivers.

Fortunately you can just set traffic to low in the stockpile

Dwarves love geometry. Why do you think they see the world as a giant grid?

I too trap the entrance. The problem is when a bunch of them head out for some hauling job and are ambushed by the gobbos.

No wonder they're being superseded by the humans

What's the best way to defend yourself against a goblin bowman ambush? Why, stand in one place and get butchered, of course! Better yet, run TOWARDS THEM!
Gah. I hope that Dwarven danger sense gets improved soon.

Well hey, since I made a creature for fun and it's pretty strong, I guess I'll ask that it be given a go.

Capture a fire spirit and put it in a pit in your entrance hall. Next time some goblins wander in, pour water on it and have a clambake.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Silverforge, a snappy fort location
« on: March 22, 2008, 11:36:00 pm »

Created in DF v0.27.176.38c.

[WORLD_GEN]
   [TITLE:STANDARD]
   [SEED:3697496390]
   [DIM:257:257]

This location has Adamantine, a magma pool, a magma pipe, underground river, a chasm, a layer of flux, and a few veins of iron.
Other features include a large amount of Galena, Tetrahedrite, Sphalerite, and a few other ores, such as native gold and copper. There are some gems to be had as well. You sure won't be short on silver, here. There is a vein of native platinum, larger than usual.
On the downside, there's not much wood here, and no sand. However, the layer of silty clay and the presence of the underground river means you can easily start a large underground forest.
Has all neighbors.

I have made a reveal.exe map of the local area here.

Seek your fortunes at Silverblood! Strike the earth!

Most migrants are useless anyway. I don't usually bother to equip them at all. I just set them to unarmed combat and throw them at the enemy.

When all else fails, use raw Dwarfpower.

I've found that in some cases, you don't have to bother with muddifying at all. Tower caps will grow on unaltered silty clay, as long as it's underground.

That's true.
No steel here. Or flux. Or even iron. It's just copper everywhere. There is the adamantine, though. Other than that, I have to rely on the odd goblin ambush and siege to provide me with iron.

Fortunately, a caravan was ambushed by archers so I have plenty of steel armor from the poor dopes who tried to fight them.

« on: March 21, 2008, 04:24:00 pm »
I had a weaponsmith go fey. Unfortunately, he used two copper bars left over in the forge and one adamantine wafer. Had I used those bars I would have had a full adamantine artifact weapon.

Usenrober, "Helpwiped", a Copper short sword.
It is studded with Copper and Adamantine. On the item is an image of three roaches in copper.

The value is 367200. Is it still a worthwhile weapon or just a collector's piece?
