DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How often does your game crash?
« on: April 07, 2021, 07:23:31 pm »
i had that happen while messing around in a Dawnthunder save, but that was a few versions ago and Dawnthunder's a mess to begin with. Still, there is something to be said for the way generated forts are built causing immense lag due to pathing due to a) single tile wide passages, b) doors shut to animals but not dwarves, c) too many gd animals to begin with why are there horses in the fortress this is literally the worst possible design TOADY WHY I AM BEING TRAMPLED BY ANIMALS

i did have adventure mode crash but i had just tried to use a dfhack command to swap control to a different person so i could see underground so i'm blaming that as its the only time it happened.

exactly what it sounds like. i'll start.

Crabs are crime enabled.

i'm curious now. has anyone made an adventurer with the sole purpose of stealing every. single. artifact? and how well has that gone?

i lost a grand master mason to a forgotten beast cuz the halfwit was too busy hauling a rock to make a timely exit out of the basement.

You can fix this problem by putting a small stone stockpile next to your mason shop, with a couple of wheelbarrows, set to give to the shop. Otherwise masons will always pick whichever stone they’re closest to when they decide to make a thing, even if there is a stone sitting right next to the shop.
see, the workshop was in the basement, to clear rocks from my other stockpiles down there. it was already set so he would take rocks from my sandbag stockpile which was a short walk away. i guess when the call went out to gtfo, he was in the middle of hauling a rock from there to the workshop and just. didn't drop it.

To the dwarves of Towngrowl,

When the burrow alarm sounds, you are supposed to drop everything and run. The loss of our mason is a tragedy, but take this moment to learn from his mistake, and remember to DROP THE DAMN ROCK, else you will be too slow to evade the MASSIVE MURDERCRICKET bearing down on you.

Yours, the overseer

dwarves can and will curl up into a ball and turn into a stone wall when distressed/threatened. they remain aware of whats around them but cannot be moved or mined.

i will say that i've never had any crashes in adventure mode, it's only with fortress mode.
How often does your fortress mode crash (in 47.05)?
uh i'm on 47.04, but it was crashing after only an ingame month or so. i just lost exactly a month's worth of progress since it autosaves seasonally and the military shift change just occurred. interrupting the game to save frequently helps, i didn't do it this time because i was after data ::)

i made a tiny pocket sized world to see how that affects fps lag and 1, works great! rolled 250 yrs of history in a heartbeat. 2, i think dwarves are extinct*, so once i finish beating up giant tortoises with my giant grizzly bear i'm gonna see if i can build a fort and bring back Armoks chosen people.**

*i made a dwarf character, got killed, and then in subsequent games the only option was human outsider.

**well i am gonna wipe out a bunch of night creatures too. there was one section that has so many lairs. i take a step and boom! another lair.

update: dwarves do exist still, i found some in a dark fortress.

Dear Urist McLame-o

While I appreciate the fact that you are now a legendary armorcrafter, I must say I am rather disappointed in your artifact, being crafted out of one single bar of silver and nothing else. I am even more disappointed that you made a GAUNTLET, of all things.

-yours, the Overseer

Dear Overseer Nezclaw

You got all upset with Urist McMetalcrafter over there for using up half the ferrous supply, the last of the cave spider silk and a  shell on his stupid figurine of magma crabs, so at least I made you something functional! Give me a break, I know metals are scarce, I didn't insist everyone try to eat shelled food, I didn't even use up too much metal making the glove a pair. Tell me what you want made, and I'll make it for you! I'm legendary now!

--Urist McLame,
(who is only lame because your doctor needs someone to make some soap before I get an infection in this here foot...)

*flips through notes* i don't have anything on an artifact figurine of magma crabs? are you sober?
but all right, i'll ease up, seeing as the gauntlet is the most valuable artifact produced in this fort.

<snip>

they may also want to me raised as undead.

Intelligent undead?  Or unintelligent?
Either, the dwarf gets to choose.
So what do the dwarves wills say what they want the undead nezclaw to do, or does he just act as a guardian?
ah the traditional fixating on the typo  ;D

i made a room above the fortress and stuck some beds in there and assigned the kids to it so they get some sunlight. most of the fort is doing pretty well with avoiding cave adaptation, rn it's just the kids and the bards that need to get out more. i'm also digging out a magma pump stack. i have plenty of ore so i could train up a weaponsmith, but i don't have enough fuel. all the coal on the map is in the light aquifer. i hate aquifers.

i also took a look through my old versions of the LNP and found some of my old forts, including one that was a !!Fun!! reclaim with bodies EVERYWHERE and the walls and floors painted with blood and vomit, and a fort that was fairly young that was in imminent danger from a rampaging wereelephant. and i have a bad habit of putting off defenses until later.

so Vicious Mockery?

Dwarves can now write wills as to what they want done with their bodies and possessions when they die, failure to follow through with that results in them haunting your fortress, and engraving a slab won't help get rid of them. also the manner in which they die changes nothing. they want their body to be interred in a masterwork adamantine sarcophagus decorated with scenes of elf murder in diamond? well i sure hope you didn't kill them with a bridge accident.

they may also want to me raised as undead.
