DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 29, 2021, 11:14:12 pm »
a necromancer just petitioned for residency. this can't possibly go sideways.
Is that in 47.05?
yyyyyyep. same as the intelligent undead wandering around
Most of those seem to be regular Villains trying to corrupt dorfs. Haven't seen any of them petition for residency since the fix for 47.05. I mean, that fix was meant to stop them coming altogether, so obviously didn't work well so not a great surprise. Oh well.
i'm stupid, it's 47.04, not .05.

also i really need to migrate my saves once in a while...

in other news, i still haven't gotten a decent weaponsmith yet, and my game keeps crashing. i did capture a GCS and set up a silk farm, though

since updating to the latest LNP i've been getting more crashes than usual. i do have it set to seasonal autosaves, so i don't lose too much progress, but it's more frequent than i've noticed in the past.
LNP turns on a lot of crap by default without people realising sometimes.
hmm.

i had to rig the dwarf cages to a lever in order to free the poor sods.
also, mistakes were made. i now have too many crundle and trogolodyte cages.

[edit]
well. not only did i get another dwarf scholar necromancer visiting, but there's another forgotten beast in the basement and I *still* haven't gotten the emergency bridge rigged up, let alone a military.

just backread and god damn that was a wild ride. on the plus side it did prepare me for the intelligent undead that popped up in my fort after an incident with a forgotten beast and visiting necromancer.
i'd like to request a dorfing too. someone with a preference for crabs, if possible :P

started a new fort, having finally updated my version.
it was going pretty well! nothing too bad, although there's a light aquifer thats pissing me off.
then i get a forgotten beast. a great winged blob of mud (although idk if it actually flew). you'd think it'd be easy to dispatch, but no, it was a webspitter. tore through my fort like a hot knife through butter. why i put only a cage trap corridor separating basement access from my hospital is beyond me.

eventually it does die! only, there's a necromancer visiting. he ends up involved. through some divine providence i end up with four risen butchers and one reanimated hand that's quickly dispatched.
i lost more than half my fort in that. i think 27 dead. including the necromancer. and two of my living dwarves are trapped in cages.
i also have a hunter running around unclothed that i can't do anything with despite him appearing to be a full member of the fort?  actually scratch that, he's clothed now, (the dead don't need clothes after all) but i still can't do anything with him.

as soon as I unpaused i got some undead invading. i have no military of any kind. i do have most of a defensive wall built but there are still two gaps in it and i haven't rigged the bridge gate.

edit: OH LOOK A NECROMANCER
edit2: THREE OF THEM. at least they took off and the undead didn't actually make it to the fort. small mercies.

When forbidding metal bars to control artifact material, it's easiest to do it through the stocks screen.  Press z, scroll to stocks, scroll to bars, and press F on all types of bars other than the ones you want (steel or adamantine, probably).  This eliminates the task of trying to physically locate the bars in your fortress.  Once the dwarf has selected their material and brought it to the forge, you can unforbid the bars.  Be careful that the dwarf doesn't have a material preference.  Sometimes pressing q on the claimed workshop will show bars of metal and not specify a type but the dwarf may nonetheless have a preference for only a certain type.  If all of the bars of that type are forbidden, the dwarf will sit in the shop until you unforbid the type he needs or he goes crazy.

However, if, as was the case in my situation, you have a moody dwarf who will only accept adamantine wafers (sometimes the case once you have adamantine available) and that dwarf has a preference for maces, no amount of forbidding will affect the result.  You either accept an adamantine mace and pat them on the head for doing a good job or let the dwarf go crazy.

i was all ready to forbid cheaper materials, (i managed to force a sapphire statue that way once) but no he took his single bar of silver and went ham.

Dear Urist McLame-o

While I appreciate the fact that you are now a legendary armorcrafter, I must say I am rather disappointed in your artifact, being crafted out of one single bar of silver and nothing else. I am even more disappointed that you made a GAUNTLET, of all things.

-yours, the Overseer

i had a dwarf enter a strange mood and i was all hyped cuz his moodable skill was armorcrafting plus the "oh cool new artifact!" feeling.

he took one silver bar and made a gauntlet.

add more detail to the artifact descriptions. like an excruciating amount of detail. to the point where someone drawing it has absolutely no room for interpretation, there is exactly one correct depiction. AND, add dwarves whose only job is to critique these artifacts, and their critique also gets added to the description. and increase the amount of materials to Planepacked levels.

Just now beginning steel production. Mini dwarves produce it but I've more than maxed out the number of hives. Have been unable to get similar populations of honey bees, only like 10 hives compared to 60 mini dwarf hives. Fuckers breed fast.
did you implement an idea from the Terrible Suggestions thread?

i pulled up my (outdated) game to see if I could find any interesting artifacts to draw and instead got sucked back into it. (It was inevitable)
I had one map that had been hit by an infestation of werepigs. Blood everywhere. There were ten dwarfs left? maybe less? by the time i got the two werepigs walled away while praying that they hadn't infected anyone else. They hadn't, thank Armok, and so they're now confined to their rooms alone.
Then a weregecko showed up. It was dispatched.
Then a siege arrived consisting of one (1) goblin recruit that immediately skeddadled.
Migrants arrived at some point during this.

I'm not sure if I have a functional military on any of my saves at present...

Wait, is that a reference to Team Fortress 2 lore?!
tf2 lore is exactly dumb enough for it to be perfect in this thread ;)

Boulders should sometimes play smooth jazz without warning.
it plays when dwarves are in danger, but not consistently, and whether it plays has no correlation to how much danger your dwarves are in

Dwarves can have a preference for hickory smoked horse buttholes.
They also get terribly upset if they catch you trying to substitute hickory smoked cow buttholes.
i don't know what this is a reference to and i'm not sure i want to know.

Stairs and ramps are removed, instead dwarves now have to create explosions to propel themselves to higher levels. they are not protected from the explosions and there's a good chance they will explode into giblets if they do it too many times in a row

Some dwarves can one-punch anything.
All goblins can one-punch anything.
Every creature in the world can one-punch anything.
But only if it's funny.
