Now I know that many of us are excited about the new changes that are coming, but one that I'm having trouble seeing the use for is burrows.  I understand what the command does in theory, but what do you guys think you'll be using it for?  I'd like to hear a lot of different creative ideas, if you have them!

If you buy something from a caravan, is it more likely that they will bring it next year?  This season my dwarf trading partners brought nothing but wood, something I have bought from them in the past.  Strangely, they brought pretty much nothing I asked for.  How do I ensure they stop bringing me useless things like tons of cloth, leather and wood?

(Yes, I tell them what I want each season.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Friendly Goblins?

A little while ago I started a fortress on a goblin site, and set up camp.  They didn't seem to care that I began mining, building, and taking over their quarters.  There was even a guard that seemed to like watching my guys run around doing their jobs, and he even attacked hostile creatures.  Has anyone ever had this happen?  On previous releases I set up a camp and was immediately attacked.  Weird.

DF Suggestions / New Skill: Geology

I've suggested this privately to Toady, but I wanted to know the community's opinion of this:

Having a skill that allows a dwarf to identify valuable gems/metals hidden deeper in sqares not normally visible.  Stone wouldn't be shown.  As he gets better, the larger the radius.  Graphically, you could just show an asterix or some other symbol indicating a hidden entombed object so that wall smoothing doesn't start to look weird.  A use of the "k" key could look directly at the object to determine what it is would be allowed.

I just emailed this to Toady, but I thought you guys could discuss this too:


1. I know this is very OCD, but could you please allow us to smooth sandy/peaty/earthy soil?  I know in real life it wouldn't make much difference, but visually it helps to make a space feel more formal.  At the very least the walls.  You could make it not improve the value and disallow engraving and fortifications.

2. Could you enable painting?  Wall and item painting would be fun...

3. wood + bucket of water + workshop = pulp
    pulp + some skill + workshop = paper
    paper(s) + some skill + workshop = blank book or scroll
    blank book or scroll + writing skill + study = trade good book, with description of random story/historical event(s)
