DF Suggestions / Skills Reduce in time if not used
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:41:00 pm »
If dwarfs are not using skills, then over time they should decrease.

The only thing which would prevent this is when they get to the higher levels.

As they gain more skill, the chance of them losing skill for not using them decreases over time.

DF Suggestions / Re: Lever pulling
« on: March 15, 2008, 12:43:00 pm »
Or we could go with my original Idea of "Pull Lever Now"

Which forces the closest dwarf to pull the lever right away no matter what, unless he dies. Not hunger, or being attacked can stop him from pulling it.

make emotionality correlate with being stuck by strange moods. and then have every X amount of $ of work produced = a child. (reduced or increased by happiness of course)

after awhile you'd get dwarves perfectly adapted to your fortress, a constant stream of horrors or happy-time play shop.

(it would probably be needed to have the nobles breed separately from the useful folk.)</STRONG>

cool idea  :)

This is my ideal game as well...sept for the lack of a lot of stuff... but still the best game out there currently that i have found. No game can come close to touching DF, in my opinion.

DF General Discussion / Re: Beginning C++ programming

Is there a specific program and accompanying book that is good for beginniners? I used to have C++ For Dummies, but it's about 10 years old now. I want something more recent.

And am I correct in thinking that all I need is a simple compiler, to begin making small games?</STRONG>

The best IDE you can use is www.Codeblocks.org.  Beats the crap out of MSVC or DevC++ any day. Its open source as well.

Also check out www.gpwiki.org

If you want to do graphics the i suggest you use sdl, and if 3d graphics, then openGL. Try to stay away from directX.

These are also my opinions btw  :)

It seems your doing a pretty good job finding excuses as too why toady cant do this.

He doesn't have to wait on graphics, since graphics are not a requirement to having the game running correctly.    :)

Graphics are either in *.bmp format, or *.png. Neither of which can contain anything harmful. Only *.jpeg / *jpg are capable of containing virus's.

Also it only takes about a minute to look over a picture and check and see if theres anything bad in it.

Unless toady's monitor has a lot of bad pixels in it that went black, then he might have a problem.

Not that i really care to debate this anymore. What ever toady does is perfectly fine with me, I'm not complaining.

Do you want to please the new users or the loyal current ones?

I mean, Toady would have to stop what he's doing with gameplay updates to get a great, official graphics set.[/QB]

Doesn't need to be great. I just thought it would be nice if he included some of the already made graphics with the game.  :)

Wouldn't take up much of his time at all really.

I don't see why there would be any problems with that?

I don't see a problem with the interface. The interface in DF is much better compared to other ASCII games.

I just started playing a few days ago.... Or maybe a week. I never had a problem with the interface. If someone has a problem understanding the interface right now. There going to have major problems playing the game. The interface is simple and easy to use.

Sure it could be optimized a bit. But i don't see that as being anything important over game play...

I was just suggesting that toady simple include some basic graphics with the game so when you download it there already there.

I didn't say nothing about putting graphics before game play, and anyone who thinks graphics should come before game play should not really be here.

Game play should always come before graphics. Thats what makes a Good/Great/Awesome Game. Thats why we have DF. Thats also why theres no good games out on the market today  :)

I second that. Still leaves my suggestion valid tho.

He doesn't need to "add" gfx. Mainly just include them with the download. That way we don't have to search/make our own. Thats really all i'm suggesting, is for he to include some player made gfx as a standard set. Wouldn't take much time other then including the bitmaps in with the package.

I did not mean for him to change anything from the way it is. Only to just include the gfx when you download the game.

Is this unreasonable?

What game is for everyone?

All game genera's have there own groups of people who dislike and like them.

I think a lot of people like DF, and i think a lot more people would be playing it, if there was a standard set of gfx to use.

I currently use > http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=21883&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

with the newest version of DF.

If it wasn't for the gfx i wouldn't be here today, or even be able to play.

So i think DF would gain a lot more popularity if toady just added in some basic gfx like this.

In fact i'm a "Dabbling" pixel artist myself(well maybe "Novice"), and if toady asked for GFX submissions, i would be more then happy to start drawing things up for him, completely free of charge   :)

DF too me is the end all for games. Theres no game out there better then DF, aside from maybe thief 1 and 2. But other then that nothing even really comes close.

Edit: Also, i recommend you Toady, do not sell out to any publishers. Never sell out the rights to this game. Not saying you shouldn't take up any contracts to allow publishers to publish and sell the game for you. But never release owner ship to no one.

oh, that duel screen thing?

oh ok lol...

Yeah dwarf fortress ain't running on that anytime soon, maybe a palm computer tho, that would be neat.

It would have to be a stripped down crap version of the game to even come close to running. Maybe not even worth playing  :(

Now i wouldn't mind seeing it for the playstation 3... Or one of those other consoles i don't know the names too hehe...
