"Free food AND housing that's not rat infested!?"

"You drive a really hard bargain, Sir Dunas. I suppose I could extend my contract a bit longer."
"Ahaha! I assure you, a household under my name shall be clean, Lulu. I hope that your talents shall continue to serve for the embetterment of Dunland and Wyrmpeak."

At Dunas' announcement of getting receiving lands Eiriol started to clap excitingly for him not caring if anyone joined in or not. At the offer to have her contract extended she tilted her head at him

"I don't think that my contract was even up yet. I haven't helped you smack the people you played me fore enough for it to be anyway, but if you want to pay me more sure thing." she said happily.
"Heh... You did your duty at the side of the camp, Eiriol. That is worth its coin no matter how many people you've smacked."

"It'd be an honor for me to serve under you, Sir Dunas"
"It is good to see you eager even after today had... multiple unexpected turns. It is an honor to have you on my side, Maria."

Emilia thinks over her options.
"...."
"You understand, Sir Dunas, that our ultimate loyalty as Maiden Warriors is to the peace of the continent. Should myself, Rhian and Tanja no longer be required here as Maiden Warriors, we will be making our way."

She nods.
"That said, I swear by my sword, so long as we are needed here, I will serve your cause."
"Of course, Lady Emilia. I will always keep your obligations to the greater cause in mind. Dunland already made enough enemies on the political stage as it is with this war, I will not want to further increase tensions."

"Fealty's too much. I'm a merc. But your coin is good, so I'm here until it isn't." Rork says dismissively, thankfully not stinking of alcohol.
[...]
"When are we moving out? Tomorrow or now."
"My coin is my loyalty. As long as you work under me, you shall be treated as if you swore fealty, Rork. As for moving out, it will likely be tomorrow. Final preparations have to be made in addition to the soldiers deserving both celebration and a moment to mourn for the fallen Sir Worden... It would not do to move now."

"I'll be happy to serve as one of your knights as long as I can Sir Dunas. Sir Sverrand, I wish you a safe trip."
"Very well. I am honored to have you accompanying me me, Artair."

"Now that I have everyone's continued desire to work together confirmed... For the foreseeable future, our mission shall be threefold. First, dealing with bandits. Second, report any sightings of Darkspawn that may occur, even if we manage to eradicate them. Third, preserve that is left of the lost Mamkute tribe. An honorable duty... and one that will continue to bring an adequate number of coins in your coffers, for those wary of their pay. Speaking of, in celebration of this partnership, you all shall receive access to part of the resources of the Dunas estate, to spend as you see fit on better equipment as long as you discuss purchases with your team members before commissioning the combined order to me. I'm thinking about 5,000... no, let's make it 5,500 Gold. That should be adequate. If there are no more questions, then you are dismissed for the night. I shall see you at sunrise."

Yui works parttime at July until the 500 yen cap is reached.

258
Kruger audibly clears his throat when Ricardo answered so casually.

"Of course, professor. How may we be of assistance?"

259
Maria

As per the usual, Harana casts an annoyed gaze towards Maria, but then starts to eye her more seriously as the latter states her request.

"... You match Sister Milliere's description. She vouched for your innocence regarding the Darkspawn. Bloody hell, can't squeeze you dry without drawing the ire of the church and they can be a real pain in the... Look, girl, I have little time to spare. Everything you need to know about an Asheater, you can read it up. We do not hide our intel about Darkspawn and work together with the church to ensure that information is public. Your liege can probably hook you up with books."

The Captain then presses a taint-detecting stone in Maria's hand, explains what she has to do with it and then moves on. Precisely, into the tent of King Alfalm.

A mere ten minutes later, Captain Harana leaves the tent, the corners of her mouth seemingly more cramped than before. She checks on Rhian, Lulu and Maria's stones, remarking that the stones are not corrupted and then moves to King Talos, reporting that Alfalm accepts the surrender and that he will give the offer of exchanging dragonstones for manpower some thought before coming to an answer. The Westwind monarch sighs and nods before establishing a magic circle, eventually transporting them back to their camp.

Shortly after, Sir Dunas exits the tent himself and summons his entourage into his private tent, first ensuring that every mercenary gets the agreed-upon payment.

"With all formalities done... ... I have something to announce."

He clears his throat, then flashes a slight smile as he continues.

"In recognition of my duty during the war, His Majesty, King Alfalm of Dunland, had granted me a parcel of land within Wyrmpeak, the exact details to be confirmed during a future ceremony now that Westwind has surrendered. I cannot express how much it fills me with pride... Then again, expressing that would only bore the most of you."

Sir Dunas scratches the back of his head, being surprisingly casual in posture for a moment.

"Of course, this also comes with obligations. As a consequence of the war, banditry has been flourishing in Wyrmpeak and it is my duty, and the duty of all future landholders in Wyrmpeak, to eradicate it. Therefore... it has only been one day, but I already feel that your reliability is an asset I cannot ignore. I would wish to extend your time of service under me. It may be renewing a contract, it may be swearing fealty, it honestly makes little difference to me for our future alliance. I can guarantee that you'll be given private quarters, food and opportunities to maintain and expand your armory. Granted, the private quarters will be rather basic in the beginning, but as my manor expands, so will the quality of your quarters, that is my promise. I hope I can continue to rely on your services."
"... While we're all here... Sverrand, you have been summoned to your uncle's estate for personal reasons, therefore you are officially dismissed. I wish the best for your future."

Lulu & Rhian

"So you have thoughts. What a surprise. Come back when you have hints or evidence, thoughtful warrior."

Captain Harana was about to move on when Lulu made her approach.

"Dunas' team. As in, Sir Dunas, whom the actual Scarlet Knight has reported of witnessing at the supply camp. Good, his unit is at the top of my shit list anyway, so that saves me the trouble of finding its members. Catch!"

She throws two small plain stones towards the dour and dippy pair, one for each member.

"Taint-detecting stones. Press them against your bare foreheads for the next five minutes. Refusing to do as I've said will be considered admission of guilt. That's a Hundred Sigil euphemism for 'getting your bones charred'. Understood? Good."

With that, Captain Harana marches on.

261
Emilia, Maria, Rhian

"... You seem to have the wrong impression, madams. Then again, one false ideology quickly breeds many fervent followers, so I will forgive your assault at my character. But to the contrary, gold-haired maiden, your beauty is proof of your prowess. For a man yearns for scars where a woman yearns to avoid them. To fight alongside comrades and still have your faces untarnished, the only two explanations are cowardice or expertise. And I believe in Sir Dunas' capability of weeding out the cowards from the capable. So, by praising your beauty, I also praise your combat capabilities. For a maiden of war, they are inseparable!"
Sir Thrum coughs and clears his throat.
"But as you wish, I shall remark on it no longer. As for the Asheater... Naturally, it must have been a secret weapon of Westwind and you managed to make it go haywire by accident. After all, it takes preparation to create one, they do not happen by accident. But no need to exact revenge for their corrupted vile, for Westwind already paid their karmic price on the battlefield today!"
He laughs heartily, but mostly loudly.
"Indeed, madams, our pressure at the front was like a diamond and we yield neither step nor stone to those Westwind warlocks! My efforts were especially crucial in driving them back and ultimate victory would have been achieved if not for the Asheater's appearance forcing a truce. Missed the Scarlet Knight, but with how I performed today, I could have easily slain him and become known as the knight who bested the Scarlet Knight! Why... I already have an epithet once it happens: The Crimson Knight! Fitting, for my marvelous hair is my standout feature, wouldn't you agree? Of course you would, you would!"

As the camp slowly but surely calmed down with the Asheater's defeat, a magic circle begins to manifest near to its main entrance. To those knowledgable about the utilitarian branch of magic, the circle is known as a target marker for the Mass Transport spell, a complex magic requiring two magic beacons, one at the beginning, one at the destination, and the approval of those operating both beacons. Hence, its mere presence means that whoever is getting Mass Transported to this location has been approved by the camp's beacon maintenance team. Still, spears are cautiously raised.

It requires ten seconds of remaining stable before the magic circle fufills its duty and a group of people emerge in its place: The King of Westwind himself with his personal guard, plus a woman of peculiar looks and mannerism. One of the guards has a white banner raised.
"What a shabby encampment this is. Westwind surrenders to that?"
"Please, Captain... Mind your tongue."
"I'll only mind it if a Darkspawn manages to snip it off."
"... Ahem. Soldiers of Dunland! With the appearance of the Asheater, it is Westwind's position that the Darkspawn have managed to secure a hold in Wyrmpeak. As Westwind is already heavily occupied with the eradication of them on their homeland, it is inconceivable for us to spread our rare, specialized and irreplacable units dedicated to Darkspawn eradication even more thin than they already are. Therefore, in exchange for the promise of ridding Wyrmpeak of them, Westwind offers capitulation. We shall retreat from this land and retain advisory contact to your military for the purpose of defeating the Darkspawn. However, we can only offer manpower if Dunland upholds Westwind's original offer of capitulation, which is delivering a small number of Dragonstones to us. Relay this to King Alfalm, we shall wait for a response for up an hour before we shall return to our camp."

All of a sudden, the female captain steps in front of King Talos.
"Also tell His Majesty that Captain Harana of the Hundred Sigils is here and that He will not be exempt from my investigation into today's Asheater!"
"Captain Harana!"
"The Hundred Sigils will never compromise nor show restrain when it comes to the Darkspawn. Such is our oath when Your Majesty formed the unit."
"There is a limit to everything...!"
"The Hundred Sigils will never compromise. The Hundred Sigils will never yield. Even the depth of the seas shall be no refuge for a single drop of corrupted blood. The day the last member of the Hundred Sigils dies is the day Khalderas shall be freed from darkness... Such is our oath. Not even the risk of lèse-majesté shall hold us back, for we will never compromise... ... Therefore, the usual disciplinary action against me, Your Majesty?"
"... Goddess..."
"Wonderful. Now if You may excuse me, Your Majesty, I have an investigation to accomplish. Time is of the essence."

She walks straight towards the camp, casting upon anyone standing too close to her without permission glares that could kill a lesser person.

Rork

"Yeah... Sir Worden... He rolled down and got dropped into the Fahl. A river. Too far away for any of us to react in time and he was decently armored, so... not exactly floating material..."
"Even if we would start searching now, the Fahl has a decent current. Could be anywhere downstream, but we must stay here as long as things are only a temporary truce."

After a short, depressed silence, some of the soldiers gathered a few empty crates to improvise seats and a table. An unlabeled bottle, cheap cups and a set of used cards are placed on the table.

"It was a terrible day. Only way to brighten it is to enrichen our pay by being luckier than a mercenary."
The soldiers chuckle, but it was not a hostile one. The bottle's content gets poured among the cups and a faint aroma of clear liqueur fill the immediate surroundings.

Emilia, Maria, Rhian

The largest set of armor within the camp approaches the small gathering of mercenary women.
"Greetings, madams. You're part of Sir Dunas' gaggle, ain't you? I pay my respect to you getting out of there with your beauty unscarred. After all, an Asheater of all accursed things, allied with those Westwind whelps, would have made even me a bit sweaty if it would have been standing right before me! You're tough cookies."

Tanja

Dulosta performs several more swings before his blade is lowered and his attention is paid to the mercenary with a hat.
"I'm a knight, madam. It is my duty to be ever prepared to protect commoners. And since we have commoners among our soldiers and mercenaries, I must remain prepared."
He makes a swift spin and decapitates the dummy in front of him with one clean swipe.
"... Even more so... I'm a Bloodless knight. Dunland values strength. Integrity. Loyalty. Chivalry. That is what Dunland preaches. And it is more bullshit than one man can take."
His blade pierces the dummy's head and is raised on eye level.
"According to Sir Dunas, you are a Bloodless yourself. Not unusual for a mercenary, so how the land treats you can be attributed to you being a sellsword, one would think. But that is false. Dunland values Blood. Genealogy. Heritage. A fat, greedy man with a drop of Charos' blood within is preferred over a valiant and diligent man of no blood. You are treated injustly not because you sell your martial prowess to the highest bidder, but because you're such a valiant and diligent fighter of no blood."
For the fraction of a second, something runs up his blade at high speed. It was hard to distinguish even if one would have paid attention, but it felt like a bolt of lightning.
"This is why I'm 'training already'. I must show twice the effort to be treated equal to my fellow comrades of both blue and chosen blood. As such is the reality of things... Sellsword. If you ever felt judged by your lack of blood, then my liege, the Duke of Lestern, will support you fully. I promise that."
Sparks run around the dummy's head before it silently implodes, the scattering dust being the only reminder that the dummy's head ever existed.
"Flawless execution once more."

264
Eiriol

"It is indeed possible that an interloper must have been responsible for this inhumane act, for an Asheater is not made by accident."

In  that moment, Dunas approaches the king respectfully.

"Your Majesty, I am here to give report to what happened at the enemy supply camp."
"Very well. Please excuse us, young one."

Both men enter the royal tent, a soldier coming out from it before Orlsen respectfully nods to Eiriol and also disappears behind the entrance's curtain. The soldier looks at Eiriol for a moment, following her gaze, before lightly smiling at her.
"Yeah, I agree, that one's a cute little nut-muncher."

Lulu

Lady Vigrid's gaze turns stern.
"Vagrant. All information that, when knowingly withheld, endangers the land and people can be treated as treason. If you know something, you will say so to an authority as soon as possible, for it is your duty as a citizen of Dunland. Such fulfillment of duty should be its own reward... ... But I am aware that one's concern is clean water and fresh bread first and foremost. I shall see to it that a monetary reward be issued if you manage to find out the whereabouts of Sir Worden and the identity of his assailant. Now get lost."

Rork

"I can't believe he's dead..."
"He rolled into the river. It's slim, but there's a chance he might..."
"No chance. He'd sink. Even if he survived the arrow, he must have drowned."
"Sssh! Someone's here!"

The soldiers look in Rork's direction.

"... Ah, by the looks of it, just a mercenary."
"It's a truce for today and probably will last for a while until there's no more suspicion of Darkspawn presence. We're not on guard duty tonight, so... Care for a cup and some cards?"

In the distance, the Asheater crumbles to the ground and the flickering red and orange that saturated the fallen camp slowly but surely fade away. About a quarter of the people in the camp cheer in response, but it does little to uplift the unease mood. Sir Dulosta, who previously stared at the fight, stands up and claps his hands a few times before he moves to where cloth dummies filled with straw have been erected in the camp, taking swings at one of these rudimentary practice tools.

265
Lulu

In response, Lady Vigrid slowly rises her head, staring at Lulu with an annoyed gaze before she sighed.
"... Due to the Darkspawn's appearance, there's a truce. It is my duty to mark where armies have clashed and arrows have rained down so we don't waste time searching for our fallen men. Bad omen to let warriors rot where they fought and died. Plus..."

She fell silent for a moment, but then shakes her head.
"Well... I'll tell you this only because you were with Dunas and thus are free of suspicion, plus no one would believe a vagrant who's only here for the money. Sir Worden got struck by an arrow, tumbled down a slope and fell into the river Fahl. And I am certain the assailant did not fly Westwind colors."

Eiriol

The bodyguard immediately notices Eiriol, his hand reaching for the grip and just slightly drawing out the blade, ever watchful for any suspicious act.
"Madam, you are in the presence of His Majesty, the King. Such casual disrespect will be tolerated only once."
"... Ah, she is one of Dunas' mercenaries. Ease up, Orlsen, I am aware of her being one of his... more free-spirited companions."
"As you wish, Your Majesty."

The bodyguard's stance remains unchanged.

"Indeed, young one, the Asheater never stood a chance. I give Westwind my respect for how they handle fighting such vile opponents, each specialized unit as good as my group had been in my prime. I wish I could have done more for them..."
"Dunland almost lost a childless inheritor of the Charos bloodline due to your selfless efforts, Your Majesty. You have worked miracles back then. To demand even more from yourself is the same as demanding the Goddess to remove a mountain."
"... You are right, Orlsen. Excuse the blabbering of a withering fool, young one."

Enemy phase

Amidst the fighting, cold winds now accompany the heat and swirl clouds of ash above the camp, darkening the day there. The few remaining opponents cease their attacks in visible confusion upon realizing that fact. Ghalymae, Dunas' mount, roars upwards on two legs for a moment and has become visibly distressed.
Then, the manipulated barrel bursts open audibly, shortly followed by the ceiling above it crumbling and a deep rumbling fills the air, almost sounding like a growl. From the destroyed ceiling, the a blackened formation of rocks emerges. The rocks shift and orange-glowing eyes suddenly appear on it before the entire formation begins to burn brightly. The rock formation gradually grew in size as the surrounding flames flicker, as if this... thing grows nourishment from their destruction.

[Now Playing: Tear Ring Saga - Army of Darkness]

The Westland soldiers could do little more than to look in shock and horror.
"What... what is this?!"
"It's like my father described it! It must be a Darkspawn!"
"Nononononononono!"
"Dunlandic Devils! You even dare to weaponize the enemies of humanity?!"
"SILENCE, SOLDIERS!"
The booming voice from before the gate cuts cleanly through the dysfunctional chatter.
"Dunland! If this accursed existence is not your fault, then you shall cease fighting immediately and fulfill your duty as soldiers - nay, as HUMANS - to help everyone evacuate!"
"Hmmm... This is an Asheater. Conventional weapons will not work against it, for arrows burn mid-flight and iron becomes but a soft lump in its presence. Retreating is definitely the wisest choice."
"I know. I fought something like that in the past. It's hopeless with our numbers. You better get away, Head Archeologist."
"Heh. You underestimate me and my boys. Ready?"
"Yes, yes." "Uh-huh!"

Rubinelle's men use their arms to vault her high into the air, across the gate, where she gracefully lands next to a suprised worker with a Four of Clubs in his hands. She pulls out a set of tools from her bag attached to her belt and swiftly opened the gate as she smiled at said worker.
"You should attend the archeology course at Ajurai University, sweetheart. You might learn a thing or two. Also, I believe you have something that belongs to me..."
"... I'll overlook this trespassing since it's an emergency. Alright, let us get everyone out here alive!"

"I agree with the Scarlet Knight. Let us get everyone still alive out of here. The battle is over, we can only flee for now..."

On the forestside, upon realizing what has just happened, a priestess jumps through the fire and the smoldering debris, noticing Maria and a severily-wounded Rhian.
"... So this side has been vanquished... ... You, people of Dunland! A Darkspawn has appeared all of a sudden! Allegiances matter little now, for I beseech your help in evacuating everyone still trapped inside!"
Without hesitation, she raised her healing staff and approaches Rhian.

Amidst the chaos, one certain archer slips through the remains of the outer walls and runs for the hills, looking back at the Darkspawn ravaging the camp.
"..."
He then vanishes into the treacherous terrain.

Time passes.

The two forces have gathered together on the road towards the camp, a far distance away from the fallen camp as the Darkspawn there repeatedly burns whatever is left in there, growing ever so slightly with every new cloud of ash blown into the air. What little could be saved currently gets organized and the priestess diligently attends to everyone's wounds.
"... To honor your help with the evacuation, I will not take you prisoners of war and expect the same courtesy from you, Sir Dunas."
"I agree to these terms, Sir Valentio... What will we do now regarding this monstrosity?"
"Nothing. We cannot fight it. But the mages within the forest, those can."
"... Don't tell me that King Talos of Westwind expected this?"
"I don't know. All I know is that His Majesty personally ordered the Hundred Sigils to be there. Our elite troop when it comes to Darkspawn eradication. But maybe He just wanted the best mages to take care of your Red Wings and pegasus riders. Either way, it should now be tall enough to be noticed by our armies. Hopefully the unnecessary battle will come to a stop with that."
"Likely. King Alfalm of Dunland is the Hero of Light after all. He cannot continue a battle in good conscience when Darkspawn are now involved."
"Anyway, nothing we can do about it. We shall now return to the Westwind army. May we not fight again, Sir Dunas."
"... Goodbye, Sir Valentio."

The two opposing troops go separate ways. In the background, a symphony of spells is now assaulting the Asheater. By the time you reach the Dunland main camp, the desperate fight between the Hundred Sigils and the Darkspawn still rages on, the Dunlandic soldiers only able to watch it from afar while nervously chattering with each other and tending to the wounded. You gather at Sir Dunas' personal tent.

"It is not the outcome I've expected, but you've fulfilled your obligations. Please understand that I have to make some errands first, considering the circumstances. You're free to walk around within the perimeters of the camp until I return to deliver your rewards."

You may explore the camp and interact with various characters.

King Alfalm himself stands at the entrance of the Royal Tent, his personal bodyguard standing next to him. The inheritor of the Charos bloodline observes the fight against the Asheater while the bodyguard does not allow himself to be distracted. Considering the difference in status, one must be wise in approaching the King, keeping enough distance to not end up on the opposite end of the bodyguard's sword.
Sir Dunas is moving from tent to tent, but maybe he can be caught on the way to one for a short chat.
Lady Vigrid sits silently and lonely at a table, gazing at the map of Caranbough Hills and subtly shifting between a variety of light emotions.
Sir Thrum proudly talks with nearby soldiers, hamming up his battlefield achievements. The words "Scarlet Knight" could be heard especially loudly during his retellings.
Sir Dulosta sits on the ground at the edge of the camp, watching the Asheater on the horizon with a stern stare.
Sir Jernigan tends to his wyvern as he speaks to his fellow Red Wings. He seems hard to approach.
A group of soldiers, primarily tome-users, mumble amongst each other. Their expressions make it clear that their talks is not of a positive nature.
