DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Nist Akath. Betrayal in the Tundra.

holy crap i cant believe i made it to the end before it's over! what a waste of time!!! i mean... oh, now its going to take even LONGER to get to the end....

Exceptional work Cap'n. Truly exceptional. If im not horribly mistaken, isn't this kind of thing exactly why the Adam's brothers made this game in the first place, so that awesome and unique stories could be told about every single game? This story is at least as good as playing DF for myself. Well freaking done.

....

Wow...

im playing 33g i think, and GCSs are easy as pie. Ive killed about 3 or 4 already (without trying). I was an axedwarf.... Oh and i had a HUman party of about 4 drunks, and one or two weilders of just about every weapon type following me around. So my tip is get as many followers as you can and surround the GCSs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: On the wiki.
« on: February 19, 2008, 05:58:00 pm »
When i got into DF, my gaming computer wasnt the internet computer. So i looked up the wiki for specific stuff, then remembered it all and went back to the game. The simple fact that i needed to change computer to find stuff out meant that i just try to work it out in the game. Unless it comes to things like the possibility of flooding the fortress when i get something wrong.
Apart from that i just create jobs in workshops and look at the cancellation announcement to know what i need to make things. And use the stones thing in the z menu.
Clothmaking/dying cancellation messages aren't very specific so i do need the wiki for that sometimes.

i reckon volcanoes should refill either very very slowly or sporadically. Infinite production seems a little unbalanced.

to make this simpler, maybe a skilled dwarf would be more capable of creating a useable lump of stone, where unsilled ones just produce large stones and chunks of rock that are only useable for crafts at best. i.e. instead of unrealistic but more playable situation where unskilled produce no rock half the time, they would produce a whole bunch of useless waste.

Another related feature that would be very useable would be to be able to designate mining jobs to specific skill levels etc... without having to go changing professions and such. So valuable mining areas can be carved by skilled dwarves to get the best output but non valuable room carving can be done by new miners.

Oh oh! Two diff modes for mining designation: one that takes longer but produces useable ore/resources almost always (time and success dependant on skill) and another mode that just hacks through producing dirt, much faster mode and skill only affects speed then. That way just dump all the dirt (auto marked as dump??) and you have new rooms real quick.

it does however mean that a lot of people who should not be playing (nobles and legends) are pulling the levers instead of their wheight aroundthe fortress. you could avoid this by setting the levers to only be pulles by specific dwarfes that you know are short on money however.</STRONG>

Thats hilarious!! infact, i think i have now got a goal for my current fortress! Fortress Casino! What is that in dwarvenish?

im no expert or nothing, neitehr have i ever got an economy, but don't dwarves without a room sleep in beds that are placed as a building that arent marked as a room or anything? Surely if the barracks were out of the road enough, or had a low traffic designation on the doorway, they would sleep in the spare beds instead? Like i said, i cant say if this works when theres an economy...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Water Source
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:07:00 pm »
Thanks everyone!

At first i thought it wasn't going to work, a few jobs cancelled after the well was built, but eventually they started using it! So i can confirm that a well dipped into a channeled tile of a salt water aquifer does indeed act as a water source...

I can also confirm that the animatons of the bucket going down the rope on the z-levels between the well and the water is awesome! I really wasn't expect that!

oh no the task does come up, and cancels due to no water source.

If the aquifer weren't salty, wouldn't they get water from the aquifer even without a well (at least when it's zoned a water source)? I do have alot of buckets. Haven't played again yet so still haven't had a chance to try a well.

Thanks everyone who's answered, and those who've just read it even. I'm sure i'm not the only person who'll have this problem.

I haven't been able to try that yet as i accidentally embarked without chosing a bunch of important things.. like anvils, metal bars, stone.... i forgot to mention that the only stone is below the aquafers... I only have dwarven neighbours too, so only infrequent caravans.

However, i have just completed a massive cavern with spiral staircase in the center that passes through the aquafer. Will try out your suggestion shortly, but i thought wells didnt change the properties of the water, ie salty is still salty?
