DF Modding / Quickly receive monarch
« on: December 02, 2023, 03:52:58 pm »
For testing purposes, I'd like to quickly get te monarch arrive at my site.

So far, I used this:
- setting the settings for economic triggers and landholder triggers to the lowest possible
- with df-hack: set the timeskip-duration to about 5 months
- with dfhack and 'force caravan', let the output liaison show up early, to get the site-elevation to barony
- with dfhack and 'force diplomat' twice, get the site elevated to county and then duchy.
So Iam now a metropolis (says in the upper left corner under my fortress' name), and a duchy.

- with dfhack and 'remove-stress -all', I made all the citizens as happy as possible.

This only takes like 5 minutes., but no monarch so far.

Any tips?

DF Modding / General's expeditions going to where?
« on: November 25, 2023, 04:21:04 am »
The dwarven general, as well as the demon overlord of goblins go off to the "Depths of the world" for their taming-creatures-job, as part of their MILITARY_STRATEGY-responsibility.
Elven princesses, go out to the wilds instead, to tame other kinds of animals, like Grizzly Bears of bobcats. (Crimson Forest)
Human generals also do this. In one instance I found a human general taming polar bears in the "Blizzards of Odor".

What is the distinguishing factor in this behavior? What makes them go to certain places?

to summarize:
* World generation is what happens in the world before you actually start playing
* Fortress Mode is when you play Fortress Mode
* World Activation is what happens in the world while you're playing Fortress Mode.

There are some differences.

I created a nobles position at site level, that inherrits from a noble on civ-level.
Code: [Select]
[POSITION:MINISTER]
   (..., no SITE )

[POSITION:LOCAL_NOBLE]
   [SITE]
   [SUCCESSION:BY_POSITION:MINISTER]
   (...)
This works in World Generation (yes indeed how cool is that ;-) ) , but does not work in Fortress Mode. I 'invited' the civ-noble at my fortress and pulled some strings, but succession wouldn't occur. I made sure that the conditions were perfect and that all other options were ruled out (as far as I know ;-) )

I would like to understand this. Can someone please explain this? Not so simple: 'those systems are separate', because that is clearly not the case, because they can interact in the world generation.

And follow-up question: does it work in World Activation, and why? How can I determine that with a certain level of certainty?

DF General Discussion / The value of a human(oid) life
« on: October 26, 2023, 03:20:33 am »
How much is a dwarf worth? And the other intelligent species?
If slavery was a thing in Dwarf Fortress, what do you want to pay for it?

Here are some actual numbers for comparison
Dog: 30
Cow: 300
Giant elephant: 500
Gigantic tortoise: 1500
Dragon: 10000

Here's my point of view.
Dwarves and elves: 2000
Humans and Goblins: 1500
Kobolts: 500

DF Gameplay Questions / Default embark clothing
« on: October 24, 2023, 08:28:22 am »
Hi!

What are the rules regaring default embark clothing?

I know that clothing is defined by the entity or the civilization. However, despite having set turbans as "Required", they aren't used by my dwarfs on embark. Why is that?

Cant find it on the wiki. I did bring a turban in my wagon: one of the dwarfs took it and putted it on. So that works. But why not on default?

Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Monarchs 'entourage'
« on: October 15, 2023, 01:48:11 pm »
Studying some guides and info, I dived in what the royal entourage exactly means. Those are the folks that accompany your monarch when he arrives at your fortress. Besides this, he also brings some warriors, and those are still a mistery to me, but thats another question.
The 'entourage' may consist of consorts, a general, trade liason and as far as I know also barons, counts or dukes. So no special titles here. I guess, and this is what I'd like to discuss with you, is that these 'entourage' is nothing else as the civ-level nobles of your nation. Like every noble that is not bounded to a site. They need a place to live and same as the monarch, they live at the capital of their nation. which is now your fortress.
About the baron, duke and count: I think those guys just lost their occupation, because their lands were conquered by enemies and they just went back to live with the monarch.

But there's also the lieutenant, the diplomat and the captain. They are civ-level nobles too. Have you ever seen those show up as entourage?

Do you think that all civ-level nobles will take residence your fortress, when you become mountainhome?

In the past I did sone research on royal heirs. It turned out that most of the time it was not the oldest who inherrited the throne. So, some questions.

When the monarch dies, if residing in your fortress, who of his/her is heir? Do they need to live in your fortress, or might the next monarch suddenly not live in your fortress?

Samesies for duke/count/baron. Is the next in line always an inhabitant of your fortress?

If not so, what about [SITE] level nobles, do their titles ever get inherrited by a non inhabitant? Or is inside replacement guaranteed?

DF Modding / Why are duke, count and baron [NUMBER:AS_NEEDED] ?
« on: October 08, 2023, 03:19:29 pm »
This seems to be new. It used to be only aplicable for militairy positions. Now, also the messenger has it, but I do understand why: you may need more messengers.

But why should you ever need more ruling nobles?

DF Modding / My mod suddenly wont load.
« on: October 04, 2023, 03:24:51 pm »
I've no idea what is wrong. It suddenly doesn't load anymore. I removed all my changes, but nothing. Even nothing in the error log...
I reinstalled DF completely, No luck...

DF Modding / What makes a monarch the monarch?
« on: September 27, 2023, 03:12:51 pm »
If a site reaches the metropolis status and has a land_holder of 1,2 or 3, the monarch may arrive. the monarch is the leader of a civ.
but which tokens make him/her the leader of the civ?

Is it the highest PRECEDENCE? I think not, becouse the elven druid has 1 but the queen has 2, and the queen is leader.
Is it LAW_MAKING responsibility and the missing SITE-token? (and also precedence, becouse what if your have more?)

DF Modding / BIG BEAUTIFULL BEAST (game)
« on: September 18, 2023, 03:23:45 pm »
So this is a kind of forum-game, buth with modding.
  • Every participant can ADD or UPDATE a tag of this creature
  • or start a new mod-file (like bodyparts)
  • You may not update a tag, that is added within the last 10 posts (or something)
  • it should be(come) a valid creature, so non-working tags are not alowed
  • if this tag comes with necessary other tags, well OK then, you may add those too.

I'll start

Spoiler: "creature_BBB.txt" (click to show/hide)

DF Modding / Just smoothing?
« on: September 18, 2023, 01:39:41 pm »
Short question: Were there ever community projects for just smoothing DF up? Polishing the RAW edges, tying loose ends, fill in the gaps?
As we all know, there's a lot of DF that is a bit 'rough' so I though why couldnt we - as a group - help a bit out, just by smoothing up. But if Tarn and Zach are 'not interested in our wishes', it has no point.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / More info about hunting cats?
« on: September 14, 2023, 08:05:28 am »
Hi all!

I know cats hunt vermin (because of HUNTS_VERMIN / VERMINHUNTER). I've seen them chasing vermin at my food stockpiles, but also next to my fishers. Does anyone have more info on this behaviour?
  • what distance do the explore? what is their coverage?
  • do they only hunt vermin present at foodstockpiles? or also outside?
  • do they only hunt VERMIN_EATER like rats, 2leggedlizards, fluffy wamblers and such?
  • do they hunt the vermin that is rooted up by turkeys or chickens?
  • are there circumstances in which they dont hunt? Like other kind of interactions
  • (Important) Do they use regular attack methods in killing the vermin? Or do rats just fall dead if cats arrive?
