Hi all!
When I first started with Adventurer Mode, I decided to be a writer. Not only a boring choice, but also a very unplayable one, as it turned out. There's simply not much to do and writeable resources are scarce.
So, I thought about what kind of jobs, classes, occupations, professions are best playable in Adventurer Mode.
Of course, most combat-based jobs are good picks, there's a lot you can do. Also with the latest update you can play as an detective of sorts. So help me out here a bit.
I'd like to know what kind of jobs you think are very playable, and which one's not. Of course, the latter, must have some sort of obviousness about it. so no astronaut or something like that.
Also, which ones are better playable with mods, and which one do you need.

Here's a list for possible professions, which can be figured out by you!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll start like this

Hunter
The hunter is a outsider, who walks the wilds hunting for large prey. He gets his fun out of killing large, dangerous or rare animals. He eats the meat, and carves the bones in craftswork to sell in towns.
Playability and fun: 4/5
Its cool, lots of stuff you can do, but it has its limits.
Game mechanics applicable:
  • Combat, archery
  • Wandering wild nature
  • Tracking, sneaking
  • Lots of wildlife
  • Builing a hunters cabin
  • Bonecrafting
  • Use Hunting dogs
Game mechanics lacking:
  • No tanning, leatherworking or crafting of other body parts than bones
  • No arrow/bolt making. You have to buy them in towns.
  • Firing without aiming for a specific bodypart (like the heart)
Mods improving the experience:
  • DFHack - ADVFORT
  • Mods adding more wildlife and such
Other considerations:
Bolts are heavy, so bring some pack animal to carry the load.

Writer
The writer is creative person, a romanticus or scientist, who likes to but his thoughs on paper, selling books.
Playability and fun: 1/5
Its just boring.
Game mechanics applicable:
  • Writing various subjects
  • Creativity, Composing
  • Selling books
Game mechanics lacking:
  • Buying quires is hard, creating them not possible
  • You can't really choose what to write or what the subject of your writing is
Mods improving the experience:
  • DFHack - ADVFORT
Other considerations:
A writer should have some effect on the world. Otherwise what is the point of writing it down? But sadly no one really cares if your writing or not.

in the RAW's it says that plain-civs (humans) can build a wall
WORLD_CONSTRUCTION:WALL

they can also build bridges and roads, but no tunnels. That I understand.

But what is the wall? some kind of Chinese Great Wall, or Hadrians wall, or The Wall from GOT?
sounds pretty interesting!

DF Suggestions / Imposters should hide their high skills
« on: May 09, 2020, 04:01:14 pm »
I hade some imposters in my fortress, who turned out to be vampires. However, I noticed them immediately as being imposters, because their very high social skills (in particular Intimidation and Lying), and high scheming-skill.
So, imposters should be able to pretend having low skills. Also they might want to hide their kill-list and strange relatives like master and former master. Having a list of 10 deities in relations raised suspicion

Hi guys, would you help me assemble this guide? It's just a list of thing you can do, but more important what you cannot do in Adventure Mode.
I'd want to make this list, because often I find myself researching the wiki and forums, for a simple task i'd like to do.
Most of the things you can do can be found here, but not always how to do it.
See the examples here, and please fill in as much as you know! I'll try to update this first post to collect all your submissions, and then write a wiki page.
Anything relevant may be added, as long it is a valid consideration to do in Adventure mode.

Important to mention: the actions here collected as CANNOT, are actions you may be able to do in Fortress Mode, but not in Adventure Mode. Or actions frequently seen in other RPG-games, or environment interactions, you might consider doing if you knew you could.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Mountain halls are BORING!
« on: May 08, 2020, 04:12:38 pm »
Man! its unbelieveble! They better could be called Mountain slumbs. Or mountain tiny labyrint.
I never had visited a mountain hall, and thought it sounded nice to start my adventure there. Come on!
At least make it moddable to create new layers with generated structures, then we make these places ourself more interesting.

I know the max wide-range of a ballista is about 10% (so one tile off by 10 tiles straight)
When invaders are in front of the ballista, within this range, do ballista operators actually shoot as much as poissible at the invaders? assuming they have the highest possible skill, and the invaders are not to close by.

And does someone have more accurate info about the width of its shooting range? My testing showed a max of 10%, but the wiki says 20 degrees, which is much more.

I have a waterproject, in which I need my minecarts pick up water, and head back without being powered by rollers. I set myself some limitatons.
I know the speed needed to climb up a slope is about 5000, I need to be under 10.000 to pick up water, so i have to ride through the water with a speed of 6000 - 9000.
Problem is, when the water is at a level of 7, the extra drag causes another 10.000 of friction, so the waterlevel must be exactly 6 / 7

I tried something with hatches and pressureplates and it's working almost fine. However, the tiles are always something like
Code: [Select]
6 6 6
7 6 7
6 6 7

so a little to much.

Who can help me building an unpowered system, which can manage the waterlevel at exactly 6 / 7?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / CHALLENGE: fill a container with blood.
« on: April 30, 2020, 10:29:04 am »
Hi all! I've given myzelf this crazy fortress-mode challenge, but I can't figure out how to do it. Maybe you can!
Can you fill some container, barrel, minecart with dwarven blood or blood of other animals? And then so much, when its spilled it shows the 1/7 (or more) level indicator?

Hi all,

Is there a way to make creatures attack a specific creature and caste, or somehow be more agressive towards them?

I want my gorilla creature having multiple male castes. the first is 'dominated', the second is 'pretenders' and the third is 'king'
I want Kings and pretenders to fight eachother, and becomine 'dominated' when defeated. I know I can do a lot with interactions and syndromes, but the targetted agression I cant figure out how to do it.

DF Modding / pet with a tool(pick) as bodypart
« on: April 17, 2020, 08:28:51 am »
I'd like to create an animal with a pick as bodypart, so it wouln't need to use a pick. Also, I would like it to be a naturat miner. Is this doable?
I know I can make them intelligent, so later on they apply for citizenship and so on, but can I somehow let them be natural miners?
Some sort of rhino-mole. or 'bulette', if ya know wadda mean.

DF Gameplay Questions / Occupations on fortress level
« on: December 10, 2018, 04:52:09 am »
Hi,
In the occupations screen I can appoint a messenger for my own fortress. Also I can appoint a scholar, not to a library but to my fortress. What can I do with this?
