Curses / Re: Extremely Liberal Crime Squad
« on: May 18, 2013, 01:43:00 am »
I'd suggest "Abortions are fully government-subsidized." or some similar language instead.)

It'd probably be more along the line "Abortions are legal, but rarely performed since birth control of any form is fully government-subsidized.".

More C++ stuff:

C++ gun control: Not carrying a gun while in public incurs a public nudity charge.
C++ Drug law: Alcohol prohibition is reinstated (conservative politicians excepted).
C++ tax structure: Taxes are extremely degressive.
C++ privacy rights: Citizens must submit any and all personal information to the authorities, which sell it to anyone paying a small fee.
C++ death penalty: Any offender deemed not fit for the prison-industrial complex is executed.
C++ nuclear power: Nuclear-powered cars.
C++ pollution: Mandatory minimum pollution regulations are in effect
C++ labor laws: A standard work week is 25/8. Wages are optional.
C++ gay rights: Homosexuality is punished with death.
C++ corporate law: Corporations can be granted extraterritoriality.
C++ Free speech: There's a list of allowed phrases, everything else is prohibited (exception: hate rants against communism, socialism, liberalism, terrorists).
C++ flag burning: Citizens are required to shoot anyone seen burning a flag.
C++ election reform: Elections? What elections?
C++ immigration: Only disposable slaves are allowed. Otherwise, see iron curtain, just with drones.
C++ womens rights: Women are considered property.
C++ military spending: North Korea would be proud.
C++ human rights: The local community college offers torture classes.

Gun Control         All guns have been confiscated

"Possessing a gun is punished with death." ... oh wait ...  ;D

Gun control at C++ should be "Carrying a firearm is mandatory."

At L+ animal rights laws, attacking animals (even guard dogs) should be a crime.

Hah. I just found the place in the code where it does actually count killing animal at L+ animal rights as murder. TDTTOE ....

Also they will get arrested after a while.

This can easily be avoided by waiting until they're at 9x% infiltration (100% to be certain).

Infiltration percentage gives the chance for successful embezzlement.
Success grants 10 juice to the sleeper.
Failure subtracts 1 (one) juice from the sleeper.
The sleeper gets arrested if he has -2 juice and fails again.
Embezzlement generally raises infiltration (-2%...+5% per month, evenly distributed)

Hence, if you start embezzling when infiltration is at 100%, chances of your sleeper ever reaching -2 juice are pretty much nonexistent.

A good sleeper will make $5000/mo, risk free and without the player having to do anything.
$1500 isn't a lot of money

A good tailor (which you'll have after spending two or three months making cheap suits) will make about $7500 per month, also risk-free.

And acquiring that good sleeper either takes quite a bit of time (trying to convince scientists or managers to come to a meeting), or quite a bit of risk (kidnapping and converting them), while anyone with enough intelligence can be a good tailor.

Curses / Code question time!
« on: May 16, 2013, 12:51:23 pm »
I've been looking at The Code(tm) again. And I have a question.

In several places, most prominently in creaturenames.cpp, there are huge switch/case statements that basically map one number to a string or another number. In creaturenames.cpp, a random number is mapped to a name, for example.

Is there any special reason that I missed to use a switch/case statement in these places instead of a char ** and using the random number as an index into a string of names? As in:

Code: [Select]
char *male_first_names[] = {"Aaron", "Abraham", ...};
(Don't have a compiler right now, but I think that's the syntax for an array of variable-length char strings ...)

The term we're looking for for these small weapons that are easily hidden is Saturday Night Special, fellas. They're cheap, crude and shitty guns that are supposedly only sold to criminal elements and are of suspect quality...

Well, as far as I learned, there were also some fairly high-quality pistols that are/were classified as Saturday Night Specials. Certain Glock models and the PPK mentioned earlier. Ack, I'm sounding like a conservative!

That aside, I wonders if all those weapon skills are actually necessary or if they could be simplified and abstracted into a smaller number of skills, e.g. martial arts, melee weapons, handguns (pistols + SMGs), long guns (rifles + shotguns), heavy weapons. Maybe even roll martial arts and melee weapons into one skill, since many martial arts also include the use of weapons.

I'd say Stand Your Ground is the C+/C ROE.  Castle doctrine seems closer to C/M.

Yeah, self-defense laws are probably like this:

C+: Stand Your Ground
C: Castle doctrine in effect
m: Reasonable self-defense allowed
L: Duty to retreat
L+: Duty to retreat once you've helped the criminals with whatever they were doing.  ;D

OK, good to know.  C+ Drug Policy brownie sales typically bring in anywhere from $40-$100/Liberal depending on Persuasion & Business, for comparison, so suitmaking seems like a fairly powerful funding stream.  (Comparatively safe and reasonable income, if you don't mind a skill that's basically only good for making Disguises and funding.)

Selling T-shirts also has a small effect on politics, if the tailoring skill is high enough.

And you can repair clothing, too, and make armor as well.

3. Send squad to any location.

This must be the L+ prison law that slipped under the conservative radar, along with the free health care.  ;D

Making it harder to earn money wouldn't address difficulty curve issues much - it'd just make the opening game a little harder.

Well, making money should become harder as the laws move towards L+. This mechanism is already somewhat implemented in the game - selling brownies and art/music/donations become less profitable.

The opening game wouldn't necessarily become harder. At the beginning of the game, there should be plenty of ways to make money, but you'll have to pick carefully since your skills are still low. Later in the game, you have better skills, but you will need them in order to still turn a profit.

The main issue really is that, with the sole exception of Gun Control, every issue turning more L either makes the game easier for you or doesn't make much of a difference.

Well, womens rights makes a difference, depending on whether your Liberal is male or female. The percentage of female NPCs changes with the womens rights - at C+ you won't find female police officers/scientists/hangin' judges/etc.

If the LCS' hideouts were occasionally targetted by gangs and other criminals (to steal stuff or eliminate competition in the brownie business), liberal police and gun laws might also make the game harder - at C+, you'll have a fast police response and you'll be allowed to shoot the attackers (castle doctrine & guns are legal), while at L+ the police response will be slow and ineffective, and don't you dare shoot the attackers since you'll have a duty to flee and guns are illegal anyway.

Also, with C+ gay rights it could be possible to blackmail anyone you seduced successfully (though attempting to seduce someone of the same sex should be illegal). As the law becomes more liberal, this option disappears.

At L+ animal rights laws, attacking animals (even guard dogs) should be a crime.

At L+ privacy laws, secrets (files, memos, etc) should be harder to obtain..

B:They are made with some special property in reference to something else-i.e. the Walther PPK isn't very powerful, but as the iconic weapon of Bond, it could be more easily hidden.

There are probably several dozen models of handguns that fill the same niche, with the only exception that they weren't used by JB.

"Small pistol" is all that's necessary in game terms. Well, in liberal terms, it would be "Small-but-still-way-too-deadly pistol".  :D

73
As the game only gives you the weapons name we need iconic name like how the  .44 Magnum, is  Dirty Harry's gun it is a large cannon of a pistol.

Actually, it's a revolver.

Obessing about guns is a conservative thing, by the way. Another reason to keep in-game guns generic. For liberals, guns are tools at best, a means to an end. Drooling over manufacturers, models and calibers makes as much sense to liberals as, say, talking about various brands, weights and styles of hammers when all you want to do is pound a nail (or break a window).  :D

Curses / Bug in 4.06.3 when removing members from a squad.
« on: May 14, 2013, 01:03:59 pm »
Okay, I've had the crash during squad configuration again.

I removed all members from one squad and left the squad configuration menu. The empty squad did not get deleted and was still shown. Selecting it again was what triggered the crash.

There should also be a use for the massive amounts of money you can earn later in the game, e.g. donating them to a Liberal institution, running ad campaigns or helping Liberal politicians with their campaigns, or just good old-fashioned bribery.
