Forum Games and Roleplaying / Distant Colony v3 - Boardgame

A good while back I did a Forum version of a boardgame I'm working on. I finally dusted it off recently and starting working on it again, and I'd like to try out another Forum game. The last two runs were quite helpful!

I've done a bit more tweaking and streamlining to the game which I think will help a good bit. Especially since I've removed the rather clunky Turn Order mechanics so everything is just Phase Based now and people don't have to wait on each other to decide stuff as much.

I'm still working on tweaking the write-ups a bit for forum play, but I figured I'd at least get the ball rolling and see how many people would be interested.

The game can hold up to six people.

Mafia / Corruption Mafia - Game over! Outsider TheDarkStar wins!

The Mindscape, haven of those who seek enlightenment atop the high mountains and secluded valleys of the world. For centuries those steeped in its mysteries have been able to communicate with one another through the Mindscape, exchanging ideas and knowledge to further their shared goal of attaining enlightenment.

But now, now something sinister has found the mindscape. Dangerous ideas are spreading, infecting the minds of the Seekers and poisoning them to the very nature of the Mindscape. It is an insidious Corruption of thought, one not easily spotted or easily resisted. And a mind too corrupted will be unable to maintain their connection to the Mindscape.

Why this Corruption has come, and what anyone would gain from it you do not know. But you must find the source of the Corruption and root it out before all hope of attaining Enlightenment is gone.




Corruption Mafia is a special twist on the normal mafia game, where it is the spread of Corruption between posts that forms the core of the scum gameplay rather than night kills. The ‘town’ players must, as always, work together to find and vote the Scum out of the mindscape before the Scum drives them all out instead.

Signups are now Open. The game needs at least 9 players and can go up to 13.

DF General Discussion / Ghosts? Meh.

Had a ghost haunt my fortress since I hadn't gotten around to making slabs yet and the body was trapped in ice. She goes up and visits one of my hammerdwarfs.

Her response? "I was haunted by the ghost. I guess that could have given me a fright."

And her thought lists has "She doesn't feel anything after being haunted by the dead."

I love this game. :)

Anyone else tried out Cryptark yet?

Saw One F Jef playing it on his stream the other day and decided to pick it up. It's brutal, but fun.

Kind of a progressive bullet-hell rogue-like sort of thing? Not sure how to categorize it, but you're basically running Salvage missions going deeper into a derelict alien fleet. Money is both how you equip yourself and the loss condition. You start out with $500k to outfit yourself and you make money when you successfully take out the Core defense systems on a derelict so it can be salvaged. If you die, you get hit with a $100k loss fee and you make nothing from that ship. But unless you go below $0 you can just keep going and trying more ships.

As you go along you unlock a slew of various weapons and whatnot to use. Random, too, so you never know what each run it going to make available.

Other Games / Good Observer games/modes?

I'm curious which games exist that either are designed to simply be watched or ones that are interesting to set up with only AI Players and then watch.

I don't mean idle games that are just numbers going up, but ones that have AI that you can observe doing things in the game.

Any out there that people like watching?

Play With Your Buddies / XCOM: Long War - Beta 15 Campaign

Beta 15 is out and our old campaign won't be able to be upgraded in a non-buggy fashion, so...new game! My general plan is to try and replicate the soldiers we had from last time as best I can, but you can decide to make changes or go for new options as you wish.




Like last time, we'll be going Classic for this, which should be tough but quite doable. I'm going to be doing Pseudo Ironman, which is to say I'm going to allow myself the option of rolling back to a previous save if I hit a point where I'm playing horribly and really should have quit a while ago. Happens when I get too hungry or tired to think. I'll try not to use it too often and we won't be doing that within a mission, so if I have to back out it'll force me to redo everything as a disincentive to use the option much.

Long War itself is...extensive. So extensive I'm not even going to bother trying to write up all the changes. Pretty much everything has been tweaked, expanded upon, etc. Just...go look at the wiki for it. Suffice to say that the LP is going to be rather different from a normal game of XCOM, even if the core of the game is the same.

As usual, you're welcome to sign up for soldiers, give me recommendations on what to do at a strategic level, and hopefully enjoy watching our troops splatter alien gore across the globe.

You may wish to work together to try and get a cohesive squad put together, but I'll work with whatever you guys give me. Due note that your squad will eventually need an officer, so one of you should plan on taking on that responsibility at some point (and therefore will not be MEC or Psionic). Squads start at 6 troops and can go up to 8.

Well, my last LP for XCOM died a while back, as so many do. But I'm going to try again. This time with the Long War mod.

A few differences from last time, since this is long war. First off, we're going to be using many, many more soldiers in this due to the fatigue system. We're also going to be going on many, many more missions. So I'm only going to be doing screencap stuff for missions your squad is on. And the soldiers you guys claim will, as much as I can manage, be a single cohesive squad. Ideally you'll be the Hero squad and I'll send you guys off on the big important missions, but we'll see how it goes. I'll have NPC squads doing other stuff and you'll hear reports about how they're doing. I'll also use NPCs as filler in your squad if people are in sick bay (which can be for a month or so for really bad injuries).

DF Gameplay Questions / Do leather items use multiple pieces of leather?

Quick question for you fine folks: Do leather items use multiple pieces of leather? I know metal items now use multiple bars for larger items, but does leather do the same? I'm most interested in the amounts needed for larger items like Leather Armor.

My searches have failed me, sadly, and I'm at work so I can't do a quick test to see.

DF Modding / Realistic Crop seasons/GROWDUR?

Has anyone tackled the new plant files to make all of the new aboveground crops actually have reasonable values for growth Seasons and duration? Right now they're pretty much all set to super-growth ability in all seasons, which is silly.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Magitech Mechs

This is a test game for another card game I'm working on. As I've found the forum games rather helpful in the past during my game development, I've decided to give this one a whirl.

Theme-wise, think giant Magic fueled Mecha crossed with the Three Musketeers. A bit similar to Escaflowne, if you've seen that.

This is a co-operative game for 2-4 players and will be going through a Story Deck which will show the various challenges that the group will face during the Story. There are specific Plot cards that will need to be played in order to advance the story, and each Plot card has a Light side and a Dark side which reflects how well the story is going for our heroes. You will accumulate White and Black tokens during the course of the game which will determine which side of the Plot cards you encounter.

As this is an early test of the system, we may or may not get through the entire story the first time. It may be necessary to restart the game at some point depending on how broken some rules end up being, but we'll see how it goes. At the very least we'll get through Act I.

We have 4 players now, so anyone else that is interested can go into a replacement queue in case someone needs to bow out at some point.

I feel like being generous, so I'm going to donate $20 worth of games from the Steam Summer Sale to the fine folks of this forum.

Contest Rules:
  • You must be active on the forums: No Escaped Lunatics and no one with a registered date after June 10th
  • You must list what game you'd like. It has to be on sale
