Creative Projects / Mephansteras' Board Game Designs thread
« on: April 15, 2014, 02:18:57 pm »
As some of you know, I've been working on some board games. Figured I'd give myself a landing spot here to keep my various threads linked and organized and whatnot. Mostly so I can find the various places I've put info on them when I want to find them, but I'm happy to talk about them here as well.

Current Projects:

Dungeon Denizens
Dungeon Denizens is a Deck-Building game where the players take on the role of evil dungeon overlords. You recruit monsters, build up your dungeon, raid the overworld for loot, and fend of attacks from vengeful Heroes and the other players.

Kith and Kin
Kith and Kin is a game where the players attempt to build a new Clan out in the wilds. Set in an Iron-Age pseudo European land, the players must explore the land, build up their town, and fend off maruading raiders. Can be played cooperatively, competitively, or semi-competitively.

Distant Colony
Distant Colony is a game where the players must build up their fledgling colonies on a distant, newly settled world. They must build up their economies, find jobs for the throngs of hopeful colonists who flock to their planet, and compete to become the most well known and influential colony on the planet.

Dungeon Horror
Inspired by Darkest Dungeon, this is a cooperative dungeon crawl where the players must work together to defeat not only the monsters of the depths but also deal with the terror, horror, and exhaustion that the adventurers must overcome. It is a campaign oriented game with lasting consequences for what happens down in the depths.

Attack Run
One of my games that doesn't have an internet presence (until now). Attack run is basically a take on the Press Your Luck dice game. The players each command a wing of four Fighter-Bombers attacking an enemy convoy of ships in a pseudo WWII era conflict. Each fighter is represented by a card in your hand, which has two sides - Normal and Damaged.

Each ship in the Convoy is made up of one or more cards. Each Ship Section has two sides, Normal and Damaged, as well as a symbol marking how easy that section is to damage. The goal of the game is to have more Cards in your Kill pile than anyone else. You lose points for every one of your Fighters that is destroyed.

Play is simple and quick, using basic d6 dice. Fighters Hit on a 5 or 6, and Dodge on a 1 or 2. Ships simply score a Hit on a 5 or a 6.
You have three potential Attacks you can make per turn. Your first attack is Long Range, where you roll 1 die and the ship rolls 1 die. Next you have Medium range, with 2 dice each, and then Short range with 3 dice each. In between each Range you have the option of breaking off the attack.
If the Fighter hits, you roll a Section for each Hit. If a section takes 1 point of damage it is flipped to Damaged. If it takes another point, the ship Sinks and the player claims all of its cards.
If the Ship hits, you may counter those Hits with any Dodges rolled by your fighter. If your fighter still takes damage, flip it over to Damaged. If it takes any further damage, the Fighter is destroyed and removed from play.
An undamaged fighter may be used in future Attack Runs, a Damaged Fighter may not.
Once the Attack Run is over play passes to the next player (Short Range is completed, Fighter breaks off, Fighter is destroyed, o Ship is Sunk)

The game ends when all Fighters are Destroyed or Damaged OR all ships have been Sunk.

Feel free to comment here, ask me stuff, or just use the links above and post in the specific spots.

I'm taking the day off of work sick, and decided that doing an LP of Enemy within sounded fun. It's probably a horrible idea and many soldiers will die, but that's X-com for you.

We'll be going Ironman Classic for this, just to make things even worse for our poor soldiers (not impossible, since I don't find that as much fun). We'll also add on a few nice Second Wave features to make things more interesting.
Spoiler: Game Options (click to show/hide)

I also have a few tweaks to the game ini file in place. Namely, all soldiers (bar heavies) can use basic shotguns and snipers are allowed to use any of the various rifles in addition to the sniper rifle. Makes squaddie snipers much less useless. The strategic layer is also a bit different, with more UFOs showing up. Also, Satellites and successful Abduction missions have a reduced effect on the Country that happen in but lessen panic over the entire continent. Failing missions still makes it quite likely that we'll lose countries, but this means that we're less likely to lose countries just because the RNG hates us.

As usual, you're welcome to sign up for soldiers, give me recommendations on what to do at a strategic level, and bemoan our horrible fates as I try to play X-Com with a head cold.

First Order of business: Where shall we set up XCom HQ? Note that New Economy is on, so it's quite likely that whatever country with start will will have terrible income.

Finally time to start up another round of Distant Colony. I've been playtesting it more and taking feedback, both from the last Forum version as well as my tabletop players. The rule set has been tweaked a good bit, which should help streamline some aspects as well as add in some more variety for strategies. For those interested, the last round can be found here.

All of the players will be running a settlement on an Alien planet that has recently been opened for colonization. You will add colonists of various types to your settlement, build various buildings, produce & consume resources, trade, and ultimately win by having the settlement with the best reputation. Reputation is gained through the buildings you have staffed at the end of the game as well as points accrued by certain buildings during the game.

For those that are into boardgaming, it's kind of a mix between Puerto Rico and Race for the Galaxy.

The game can hold up to six players, and most phases are simultaneous. I'll be running things and doing book keeping, but most turns should be able to run without my interference and in some cases the players could even start on the next turn without waiting for me. That said, regular activity from the players would be required to keep things moving. Assuming an average of a turn a day, the game should go for about a month.

Signups are now Open!

Ran across this today: StarCrawlers Kickstarter

Here is their blurb on what the game is about:

Quote
In StarCrawlers, you’ll lead a crew of Crawlers, each with their own unique skills and abilities. Together you’ll take on jobs to explore abandoned spacecraft, battle mighty enemies, and unravel corporate intrigue. Some key features of StarCrawlers:

Classic first person dungeon crawling in a detailed sci-fi universe
Narrative AI procedurally generates missions and dungeons with randomized encounters, traps, and enemies
Strategic RPG style combat featuring a time unit action system
An atmospheric soundtrack by Ben Prunty
    Class ability customization and modification
    Randomly generated and upgradeable loot
    PC, Mac, and Linux support

Classic CRPG with a sci-fi flavor

In StarCrawlers you'll be navigating the halls of massive abandoned ships and sneaking through corporate facilities in a dynamic and interactive environment. Hack terminals to create shortcuts or find valuable data, disable or evade a variety of traps, grab as much salvage as you can carry, and keep your eyes peeled for hidden areas, loot and enemies.

Narrative AI

Randomized environments doesn't just mean slapping rooms together! The Narrative AI in StarCrawlers builds procedurally generated levels based on the story of the mission you're running. Whether on a rescue job in a pirate hulk or extracting data from a corp security station, your dungeon will be custom built to match. Lower the difficulty level for a casual dungeon dive or crank it to 11 and face fiendish traps, complex dungeons, and the toughest enemies.

Player-driven experience

The Narrative AI is also responsive: your choices of allies and how you resolve events alter not only the results of the mission, but how the story of your Crawler crew evolves.

Strategic RPG style combat

Combat in StarCrawlers has a traditional turn-based RPG style with a time unit action system. Unleash a series of light attacks with speedy, low cost actions, or strike a mighty blow with a heavy, high cost action. Smart choices about which abilities to use and when make the difference between victory and defeat.

Build a Relentless Crew of Crawlers

No Crawler can survive alone. You'll need to hire a crew, level them up, specialize their abilities, and customize their gear. Each Crawler class has their own set of combat abilities as well as special skills that provide advantages outside of combat - helping you to navigate your environment more effectively, and deal with traps, encounters, and threats. Assembling a crew that works well together is a focus of StarCrawlers!

I'm still undecided about backing this. It looks interesting, but I'm a little burned out on Kickstarters at the moment. It does mix some elements of old-school part-based RPGs that I like combined with some modern elements (like the narrative AI) that should mesh well together.

It does do a lot of the normal Kickstarter fluff, although at least some of the stretch goals look interesting. I'm not so sure about the Backer Bundle they're touting, since I've never been too fond of arbitrary in-game bonuses like that (other than pure cosmetic). But given that the game will have Perma-death and Ironman modes as options, maybe that's not so bad.

So, what do you guys think? Anyone here currently backing this?

Life Advice / Trying to remember the name of an old cartoon
« on: January 06, 2014, 04:56:08 pm »
Kind of a random topic, but I've been trying to remember the name of an old cartoon I saw back in...late 80's or early 90's?

The main character was this Savage Hero type whose tribe lived on the top of an island that was kind of mushroom shaped, so that the edge of the island that they dealt with was very far up from the water below. If I remember correctly, all of the islands in the show were kind of like that. Almost like cake serving platters.

In any case, for some reason he had to leave his home and go travel the world, which he did using a canoe/boat thing that had fold-out wings so he could glide down to the ocean.

The rest of the world was more technologically advanced than his tribe. I don't remember too much else, other than a specific instance where he's in a bar and some guy shows him glasses that can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth (pink for lying, blue for truth).

Unfortunately, google hasn't gotten me anything on this. Anyone else remember this show?

I've decided to start using this thread as a place to move things that are junk and need to be removed (since I don't have delete powers)

For instance, I've moved in some stuff replying to a mispost after I moved the misplaced post to the correct thread and they didn't make sense anymore.

Other Games / Balrum - RPG on Kickstarter
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:04:37 pm »
Ran across a really promising looking Turn-based RPG on kickstarter. It's called Balrum, and looks to be pretty far along in development already.

Should be a good fit for B12ers, since it's very skill based and involves a lot of optional building and crafting.

Screenshot gallary

But, I found it rather late in the kickstarter cycle and it's about to expire. So if you guys want to back it, back it now so it actually gets funded.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Distant Colony - Boardgame - Game over!
« on: July 02, 2013, 02:49:05 pm »
So, I have a new board game I've been developing that I think will be fairly easy to run as a forum game. I did this once before for one of my games, which was a little slow, but worked quite well and gave me some very good insight into the game.

Game is now full. I can still add people to the replacement queue, though.

Other Games / Wierd problem in games
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:42:44 pm »
Hey guys,

Been searching the internet for a while, but haven't found an actual solution yet. Hoping maybe one of you might know an answer.

For some reason while I'm in games if I have a key held down the computer won't register left and right mouse button clicks (but the mouse wheel registers fine).

Any idea why this might be? And more importantly, how I fix it?

For example, I can't crouch in Borderlands 2 and fire a gun at the same time. It's pretty annoying, and I'd really like to find a solution to it.

Mafia / The Great Temple (Bastard game) - Game Over
« on: March 26, 2013, 12:33:44 pm »
I'm still working on some of the exact details, but I have enough worked out that I can at least put the game into sign-ups. Knowing how many players I have will help me finalize a few things.

The setting for this game is the Great Temple at the Captial City of Lomonth. You are all Priests within the temple, which is dedicated to all five gods of Lomonth.

Telmorin: God of Heaven and Earth, Justice, Nobility
Avos: God of the Sun, Fire, Men, and War
Nirian: Goddess of Fertility, Women, the Hearth
Derala: Goddess of the Night, Moon, Magic, Dreams, Prophecy
Andoras: God of the Sea

For fun, here is an excerpt from the holy book detailing the creation of the universe:

In the beginning the sky was the whole of the universe, and Telmorin strode among the clouds, alone. Eventually the splendors of the heavens waned for him, and Telmorin wrought his will upon the world.

First, he strode atop the heavy, dark clouds that hung at the bottom of the sky, and those that he walked turned to land. The rest sunk down, and pooled to form the rivers and oceans of the world.

Next he lifted his eyes to the sky above, and singled out two perfect clouds. One he touched with his right hand, and it shimmered with a golden light and formed to the aspect of Avos. The other he touched with his left hand, and it shimmered with a silver light and formed to the aspect of Derala. And he said to them "Thou art brother and sister, and day and night shall be thy domain". Whereupon they lifted off to the heavens, and caused light to be had throughout the universe.

Pleased with his two children, Telmorin then strode to the mountains, and selected the most perfect of them. He touched the mountain with his right hand, and a giant crack opened up beneath his fingers. When it was wide enough, Andoras strode out into the light. Telmorin then walked to the other side of the mountain, and touched his left hand to it. Here too the mountain cracked, and Nirian emerged from its depth. And he brought the two together and said "Thou art brother and sister, and the oceans and earth shall be thy domain". Whereupon Andoras departed to explore the seas, and Nirian the land.

Wearied my his labours, Telmorin retired to the heights of heaven to rest. Below, his children explored the universe. In their travels, Andoras and Nirian came across Avos and Derala, and the four became friends and talked of all they had seen. As they talked, they realized that they four were the only beings any of sort any of them had seen, besides Telmorin himself. Avos and Derala, still enchanted by the beauty of the heavens, cared little. But Andoras and Nirian felt that their domains were missing something.

So the brother and sister went to Telmorin, and asked him why there were no other beings. And he replied that it was that way because he had not made any other beings. They pleaded with him to create others for them to interact with. Still tired from his labours, he dismissed them. But Nirian persisted, and begged to be allowed to create them herself. Telmorin thought on this, and consented. But he decreed that all four of the gods must have a hand in the creation, so that all of creation would be in balance.

Overjoyed, Andoras and Nirian went to share the news with Avos and Derala. They agreed to aid the others, and the four set out to populate the universe. First came Nirian, who carpeted the land with fields and forests. Then Andoras, who filled the seas with kelp and grasses. Avos looked at what was made, and declared that he would give some of his power to them during the day to give them strength. All were pleased with how much better the universe looked, but Derala complained that the plants were too simple and static, and she had little to offer them. So they conferred, and Nirian created the beasts of the wild and Andoras the fish and whales of the sea. And Derala was pleased, and said that she would give her power to them at night, to keep them rested and healthy as they slumbered. But Andoras was vexed that he and Nirian had done most of the work, and challenged Avos and Derala to add something to the world. So they conferred, and between them created the birds of day and night to give themselves company in the skies.

Telmorin came down from the heavens, and was pleased with their work. He praised the four gods, and said that he would add to their efforts himself. And so were the fantastic creatures created. Chief among them the great Dragons, which Telmorin cherished most of all.

As so the world flourished under the care of the gods, and they were pleased with the universe. And it came to pass that Nirian, dazzled by the brilliance of Avos, laid the finest of her flowers at his feet and begged him to marry her. He consented, and from their union was brought forth the race of Man upon the earth. And Avos and Nirian doted upon their children, and they multiplied

Andoras and Derala were intrigued by this new addition to the world. Derala, with her love of secrets and cunning, taught man the ways of the earth, of mining and jewelcraft, and of the secrets of magic. Andoras, while far more interested in the creatures of his own domain, was still willing to teach man the ways of the ocean, and how to live off of its bounty.

Telmorin saw these new creatures, and decided they were unfinished. So he gave them the rule of law, and the gift of leadership to the best of them, so that man would not fall into chaos and savagery.

And so the gods and man worked together, each in their place, and there was harmony for many years.

But things are not all well within the temple...

Mafia / Totem Mafia 2 - Town Victory
« on: March 01, 2013, 01:43:43 pm »
As last time, each player is an Elder of a Tribe, and each player has Animal Totem that grants them power. The Elders are in the Spirit Tent performing a ritual to help them guide the tribe. However, there is strife. A few of the Elders have conspired to remove the others from the spirit journey so that their ideas are the only ones being considered. The rest are trying to stop them.

When you sign up PM me the Animal you want as your totem. No two players can have the same animal, so sending in a few alternates is a good idea. Real animals only, please. And preferably ones that would reasonably be used as totems.

Powers will be a bit more unusual this time, and the overall power level of all players is going to be increased over last game.

Game size will be 8 min, 16 max.

Players:
  • Dariush - Loyal Elder - Tardigrade
  • Vector - Plotting Elder - Hedgehog
  • Toaster - Loyal Elder - Carp
  • Hapah - Loyal Elder - Jackal

  • Urist Imiknorris - Loyal Elder - Giant Huntsman Spider
