DF Modding / Re: More Metals!
« on: September 26, 2008, 09:39:20 pm »
Well, you could replace all 'extra' stones like Alunite and Microcline with additional possibilities to have ore. I think all layers have X amount of "stuff" in them. So getting rid of anything other then the metals you want will make them show up anytime you would have had something else.

DF Suggestions / Re: An Absolute Forbidden Area/Move/Work Command
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:30:20 pm »
Very true. However, that doesn't stop people from going in those areas if they think they can get away with it. Or if they're tired, hurt, or otherwise preoccupied.

You could have a field with giant signs saying "DON'T GO IN HERE! LAND MINES!!!!" And if it didn't have fences you'd probably have a few people killed every year because they took a "short cut" through the field of land mines and got blown up.

Not that I'm against the idea of "forbidden areas", I'm just pointing out that just saying something is forbidden doesn't stop some people.

Hmm...thought. If dwarves had the improved self preservation ability that was mentioned previously, they'd automatically avoid things like lava, carp infested rivers, Dragons, and so on. What if we could put in Danger Totems or something that told dwarves that this area was dangerous, and would prompt them to avoid it unless they absolutely had to go into that area for some reason.

Arenas. They deserve to die a warrior's death, and your soldiers should not be deprived of the honor of the kill. That "champion" who earned his title in the barracks, sparring? Let him truly earn the mantle of hero!

DF General Discussion / Re: What Constitutes 'Fair Play'?
« on: September 26, 2008, 12:04:57 pm »
Here are my rules, with a few more personal ones thrown in.

Traps : Generally limited to cage traps, because I like arena fights. I may use a few weapon traps in specific locations, but usually only one or two in a row to protect areas temporarily until I can get proper defenses set up.
Player Traps : Just rewards for hard work and ingenuity.
Atom Smashers : Garbage disposal only, mostly to remove clutter and lag.
Quantum Stockpiles : Generally unused, since I don't like the physics breaking aspect.
Quantum Dumps :Only under the atomsmasher, since stuff there doesn't last long anyway.
Crossbows : Usually less then half of my military, sometimes only a third.
Modded Races : Tons of races, but no real changes to the dwarves, which is the only race I play.
Modded World : Fairly heavily modded world, some powerful new metals in place. But I have more powerful enemies, so this is more of a balancing measure.
Perpetual Motion : Generally unused
Trading oddly high value items, like Roasts and decorated Ammo: Not used
Moats: Generally unused
Killing off annoying nobles: Unused

It looks like I can remove the BABYSNATCHER tag from the goblin civilization in the raws in order to cause them to replace baby-snatching attempts with sieges.  Can I change this after I've already created my fort, or would I have to generate a new world?

If I can change it with an existing fort, will changing it back after the first siege allow subsequent sieges as normal?  Or will the game not count it as the first "official" goblin siege?

Right now, you can only do that if you also replace [INTELLIGENT] in the goblin entry in creatures_standard.txt with [CAN_LEARN] and [CAN_CIV]. Otherwise, you don't get sieges, you get friendly goblin merchants.

80 Dwarves will trigger it. I'm also fairly sure that a high enough wealth can trigger sieges even without the 80 population, although it's unlikely that you'd get that high without a large population without some very expensive artifacts.

More accurately, for spore we were shown a picture on the menu of a giant juicy steak, loaded mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables all on a silver platter. Well, we got the silver platter, but the steak was a tiny strip of poorly cooked meat, the mashed potatoes looked like an icecream scoop of instant potatoes, and the vegetables are shrunken things that look like they'd sat on the shelf too long.

If I got that served to me in a restaurant, I'd demand a refund.

And to take the restaurant analogy further, any GOOD restaurant that served me something I hated would offer me another meal at no extra charge. In fact we have a few restaurants here in San Diego where they'll encourage you to try something new, with the promise that if you don't like it they'll get you something you do like instead. If a restaurant treated me the way EA treats it's customers, I'd never go back. And I'd probably refuse to pay, as well, since I hadn't been given what I'd been promised in addition to the poor treatment.

For my part, I'd rather not see swearing, especially in the topic titles. Why? Because I like to look at this forum at work, and the last thing I need is to get in trouble because someone else saw "I HATE &@#%! CAVE SPIDERS" or something over my shoulder and complained.

You can say I just shouldn't browse this at work, but I end up with a decent amount of down-time, and I'd be horribly bored otherwise.

That, and, really, there's no reason for it. It adds nothing to the conversation, and mostly shows a lack of creativity. If you really want to cuss, be creative about it. Then at least we can all be impressed by your use of the English language. :)

Anyone else ever play an old dos game called Nomad?

Any recommendations of games that are similar to it? Sounds like Space Rangers 2 might be a lot like it, but I'm interested in what else might be out there like it.

i kinda know what you mean...galciv ...i admire galciv... i bought galciv...i just don't play galciv...it feels drab and lifeless...laser I is not in a gameplay sense any different from laser X...all that research and design but the game play does not reflect it...it's not enough to say i'm a donkey...i need to be a donkey...you could argue that it is a limitation of 4x games...but that is exactly the limitation that desperately needs to be overcome..transcended...personality, immersion, bemused awe...."WTF?!" moments...

Well, in galactic civ 2, at least, the difference between Laser I and Lazer X is the size of the component. You can fit a lot more of them on the ship. Later types of energy weapons do more damage. If your argument is that there isn't enough interesting and different stuff in the tech tree, that I'll concede that. Stuff like graviton beams should actually do more then simply "more damage" I'd like to see ship parts ripped off, stuff like that.

But, it all comes down to abstraction. Damage is abstracted out, planetary life is more or less abstracted out, etc. I'd like less abstraction, but it does make the game a little less complex.

For me, I like it and have played hours upon hours of it. And still occasionally go back and play it again. Is it the best game ever? No. But it's a good solid 4x game. I don't expect their new fantasy game to be the best turn-based fantasy civ game ever, but I expect that it'll be a good solid game that'll be well worth the money spent on it.

DF Modding / Re: Making goblins survive world-gen
« on: September 25, 2008, 01:09:24 pm »
It would probably be better to add a GENOCIDE ethic.  If the civ finds it acceptable, they'll gladly destroy every last man, woman, and child of whichever civ they're fighting.  If they find genocide unthinkable, then they'll instead whittle their enemy down to one or two sites and contain them.

Good thought. We should make a suggestion for that. I'd like to have more ideals minded civ NOT wipe out their enemies. Having them try to contain them, or simply banish them from their lands would be interesting ethics options to add in.

Well, I guess the exploration and territory claiming, for one. Although the flagship gets boring, so I always end up automating it. But the whole territory thing is fun, especially when you get all of the cultural domination techs. The diplomacy is decent, if not amazing, and there is enough interesting random stuff that happens to keep the games interesting.

There are things that I wish they'd added in that the Master of Orion series had, like conquered planets keeping their original races whose abilities you can use. But over all I found it to be a satisfying 4x game. Especially the fact that you have a number of very viable ways of winning that don't rely on combat.

I think we just need to get the newcomers acclimated to how we do things here. You know, friendly reminders to clean up their language, use the search function, stuff like that.

Usually, they'll either get used to how things are done or move on.

Considering how much I like Galactic Civ 2...I'm looking forward to this. :)

It's been too damn long since anything like Master of Magic came out. Although Age of Wonder was pretty fun.

Well, I haven't gotten any feedback on it. But I've found it useful.
