for the last few seiges my marksdwarves havent gone to their station. i cant figure out why. they are assigned a station, they are active, they are "stay close to station" etc. they wont do it as individuals or as a squad. anyone have some advice?

i am coming across a problem i didnt see coming...i have about 80 dwarves right now, pop cap at 100. At first, i had loads of food and booze. my alcohol suppply fell sharply, but i was able to fix that up. my food fell at the same time, and i cant seem to get that back up. There are a lot of elephants around, so i do have some trouble with hunters getting killed, but they seem to usually kill enough to make it worth the little population control they bring. The majority of my fish is mussels, from the river. Recently, i got a message that there were no more fish in the river, which i didnt realize was posssible. What do you all do for your main source of food?

lure it into your cage traps. i currently have three and they are loads of fun. they provide plenty of entertainment, and i keep making a more elaborate arena for them. it passes the time.

giant cave swallows got inside my "forest" which i had carefully isolated from ambushers. they keep on killing/wounding dwarves, and starting a nice chain of unhappy thoughts. i have military units patrolling, but this doesnt seem to get much done. i want to exterminate every swallow from the map. anyone have ideas on the best way to do this?

i got wayyy to much to sell...the silly traders dont bring enough less crappy stuff. i had forgotten about the drawbridge thing. lacks the coolness of an ever burning fire, but i guess ill set one up.

i dont have magma. but i do have a large build up of narrow leather stuff that i would like to have gone. i dump it all, so it is in a nice little pile. I would love to be able to have a fire in my garbage pit...but this isnt working out. is there a way to start a fire? without burning down the fort? or using a dragon? (i had one but it got loose and was killed. if/when i get another, could i use it for trash disposal?)

i know about the problem with them cancelling when they hit an outside tile. the problem i seem to be having is that they do not pick up another job after they first cancel. instead they stand their and do nothing. last seige i had 98 idle dwarves chilling at the entrance.

before i post this in bugs, i wanted to know if anyone else had this problem. When i order everone inside, they drop what they are hauling, and stand still, and never go inside. I need to activate them all and station them inside. Then, once inside, everyone that gets a job that is outside cancels it (like they should) but they never, as far as i can tell, move again. I have probably 100 dwarves standing by the door currently, with no job. Considering the slowness of the seiges, this brings my fort to a virtual standstill. So does any else have this trouble?

in response to slapppy moose:
the announcement read something like "war dog killed by trap" or some such. I then went and searched for the corpse until i found it. As i said, it was wounded slightly, so perhaps they are coded to kind of blunder around a bit when they are wounded? maybe the same goes for wounded dwarves, and children (not as coordinated/strong/smart?)

what? how did this happen? my war dog got killed in a stone trap. It was inside the fort...no hostiles around to set it off and kill the dog instead. It was wounded though. Nothing serious i dong think...grey wounds only.

i found a swordsdwarf wearing both steel chainmail and an iron plate both on uppper body. is this a bug or are they meant to do this? he is designated to wear plate. It seems that it would be kinda uncomfortable with both on, but i cant argue the added armor bonus.

my understanding is that dwarves cant duel weild, but they can carry two weapons, as long as they arent two hand weps. but so far, i cant seem to get them to. so, a few questions. can they still carry a shield, and two weapons? if i set them to carry two weapons, they need to be the same type right? i figure im just missing something obvious.
