Well, I see it as more historical correct. Spearmen in the medieval times tended to be drafted peasants who got a weapon, while swordsmen etc were more trained. In the Classical Age, spearman were highly trained to work phalanxes etc...
That's probably a wrong assumption though.

But still, the spearmen can be pretty strong. Italian spear militias are so handy and so cheap.
