Rehiding (with some kind of line of sight added in), and the of engraving built walls are things I too eagerly await.

I would rather not loose the power to micromanage and I doubt any AI could do the job completely to my liking (it could perhaps to a tolerable job) so I would like to still maintain the ability to focus, zoom, correct on individual fortresses and such, but otherwise this seems like a natural progression of player power and likely to already be in a powergoal.

Cages full of cats that break open on impact. Or better yet cages full of fire imps and fire snakes.

DF General Discussion / Re: Making Elves MAD!!
« on: April 07, 2009, 05:23:50 pm »
In my latest fort I tried to murder my elven diplomat, to provoke a siege, by locking him in a room with 20 goblins. After he killed them all (with his bare hands no less) he went completely insane and and ran gibbering out of my fort, jumping off any high ledge he could find, before leaving the map. He never came back to my fort again, but I'm wondering if the elves count him as a dead diplomat? I'm assuming he died somewhere outside of the boundaries of my fort seeing as how he was stark raving mad.
That's a pretty badass elf watch out, as I'll bet he is going to hide in the hills learning the ways of the wild until he Sneaks back and goes Rambo on your Dwarves with a savage army of beastmen in his sway.

Sounds like you need some Hydrogen Fluoride (alien blood) or better yet Chlorine Trifluoride: a combustible highly reactive corrosive so heinous even the Nazis said "Hang on I don't think this is quite safe to put in our fiendishly designed self-igniting flamethrowers, guess we'll have to make do with normal flamers after all."

I think Access flows outward from the Depot not inward as the caravan itself would move.

DF Suggestions / Re: [For or Against] Tunnelers units
« on: March 22, 2009, 04:47:23 pm »
Proper field sappers and engineers would probably be one of the easiest steps in allowing for the games to create more purposeful and realistic fortress and city designs. The sieges would likely not be composed entirely of tunnelers (unless someone modded in a race of innate tunneling invaders or you were being invaded by chasm dwellers.)

Besides this tunneling and building is a lot of work and would only be considered in extremely well equipped or desperate sieges, Elven engineers for instance would be far more likely to just trap likely areas of the map, humans to divert a river, and goblins to build a variety of siege engines in an attempt to crush you to rubble.

As I think I mentioned before the ability to re-hide areas of the ma, build engravable walls and a rather stricter preservation of material (where does all that stone dwarves carve up go! It shouldn't just disappear even if it is not useful for anything more gravel) are thing I would like integrated along with this addition.

While it may be out of the technological scope of Dwarf Civilization I would like the game's physics to allow such a thing to happen, by this I mean explosives, propulsion and such.

So I heard it was beginning to look alot like fishmen here, yet some still doubted? No mater they will understand when the giant biomantic !!!SIEGE CRAB!!! arrives and starts tearing away their fortress and shaking its infectious spawn into your waterfall and booze supply.

If only you had courted the favor of the Mantis Shrimp of Miong or the paid the Cuttlefish Ascendancy to protect your coastline from the predations of Dagon's Brood. Looks like your going to have to pay their price instead of ours. What? you say they only accept payments in virgins, Mastercard, and your delicious sanity, too bad... remember that next time we request something so meager as a thirty foot platinum statue of the moon goddess.

Whether or not it is appropriate for any of the civs in the final game to build gas, electric, elf, nuclear, powered devices and harness them for the power of SCIENCE, I would like the game's engine to be robust and flexible enough to incorporate a fairly realistic handling of such arcane and queer devices as would make Newton rise from the grave.

It is also of note that as players we generally control very special and extraordinary people. That triple Legendary character could very well be this world's da Vinci, Hero, Einstein, Hawking, Archimedes, or Tesla. In this way the Player is in the image of Divine Inspiration whispering sweet secrets and pouring the incomprehensible knowledge of higher planes into whatever poor fellow we choose.

Why limit our own powers creativity as not being 'period appropriate' when the only thing stopping me from building a very 'period inappropriate' High-rise Archeology is that bordom and the carp would overtake my efforts. I say let us make anything possible (with enough work) to the players, but don't worry about the AI's 'out-teching' the period, because as it stands the normal AI Dwarves arn't even capable of laying out a properly dwarven fortress design.

The Slith were non-sapient as youths? No wonder they always kept litters of lizards around. I always figured they were like guard dogs or something, course I never got past the demo region so I probably never noticed.

I loved Exile. If only I had bought a copy. I liked the newer graphics in Avernum, but I felt he made a lot of system sacrifices like the lack of poisoning weapons, certain spells, ect. Geneforge felt really good too. Man I need to visit their site now, haven't done that in years.

It seems likely that the defeated males would try to escape the fate of castrato through self inflicted exile until they are ready to take on other males. Similar to lions such loose bands of juvenile males roaming the spaces between settlements could be the likely basis for a secondary sub-society. Being naturally strong and wishing to gain more wealth and skill they would make excellent mercenaries with a built in motivation of gaining the skill or prestige to attract, steal or buy their own harems.

In such societies the males are generally rarer (whether this is due to territorial/societal pressures like lions or simply a fact of biology like bees or certain fish)  and thus it is in the female's best interest to corporate in guarding/corralling a male as opposed to placing him in the line of fire.

It's like an easily pleased mayor or noble, you don't kill off the guy who likes rope read cloth and sandy loam because you may end up with one whose preferences include platinum and adamantine.

Perhaps dragons would be the possible race to integrate here. Maybe they simply grow too large for bipedal movement to be viable after their theoretical immortality and unbounded growth render them the fortress plundering flamethowers we love to trap. Perhaps they subscribe to the aformentioned euscocial system of biology with only a few select specimens being absolutely vital to the future of the settlement or race.

If anything it would likely be a more sexist society as males would not really need value any particular female merely that there be more to take their place. However if the females could overpower him then he is merely a stud for 'moar babies!' and thus the tables are turned, like a queen ant he would be no more than a tiresome necessity used only to fulfill his ceaseless task.
