DF Suggestions / Re: Pulling levers for sh*t and giggles

Gremlins would likely pull levers for just for the lulz.

Goblins for similar reasons but likely with more intent and an attempt at tactics, 'Oy yew git stop yanken dat one, its choppen up all our boyz!"

Kobalds might if they get curious enough. I mean you covered it in all kinds of shiny so it must be 'special!'

I suppose with material defs it will be possible to make a character literally shit bricks?
I think that like many things the best implementation of such a system would be if objects could be stacked into real piles allowing us to fill in holes holes with all manner of garbage then let it decompose.

At this point children would have to be manufactured instead of born to those who had severe or uncommon alterations. Now I doubt that baseline humanity would disappear assuming they weren't killed or or forced to ascend/integrate (the opinions of certain transhumanists on this matter frankly worry me at times.)

Also... yes we do need more good looking redheads, for greater genetic diversity! and stuff. I also suspect that natural blonds no longer have a selective edge due to preponderance of 'bottle blonds'. Hmm I wonder if japan will lead the way by just inventing blue haired people, along with catfolk, and robots.

Okay lets just say that no... with the time span we are talking about here all of recorded history could be lost society could burn itself to the ground a few dozens of times and nothing of great importance would be lost. Look at all of the myriad and diverse cultural values held throughout history and then tell me we would 'never' see deliberate human alteration both cybernetic and biological.

Asian foot binding, South American skull shaping, Aryian breeding programs, African fat-camps, liposuction, breast augmentation, Hair dye, corsets, animism/furries, transgender operations... all examples of attempts to significantly change the human body.

Sure there is a variable mean of 'normal human self image' but the variation only needs to pop up hear and there, before long you could see subcultures of 'modded' popping up here and there. If aliens, dragons and elves don't exist yet we will see fit to make them ourselves.

Perhaps the goblins eventually and imperceptibly grow into trolls... or perhaps they are merely yet another, more ingrained conquest of their kidnapping enterprises?

96
This could make goblins even scarier as their access to steel, obsidian and silk could crash local dwarven textile and mining ventures. Hell they do that already by putting all my weavers out of business with their silk junk. this combine with their tendency to forcefully integrate and recruit a variety of new racially different members could make them like some kind of twisted British Empire?

97
So who's up for quantum computing? Seriously by that point it may become easier to invade other brane spaces or collapse them into our own.

98
Or this means that any aliens nearby are either paranoid (don't want to reveal their position with such obvious solar machinery), finished their projects (if they made a real tight and efficient system it shouldn't radiat much at all to see it by), or are insufficiently advanced (also not a good sign as it ends up working into the Fermi Equation with only a few of all possible civs making it past the all-to-critical phase of interplanetary travel.)

I would hate to do away with the hefty tome filled towers and dubious diagrams despite enjoying this idea. It is likely that the tomes and diagrams are used to determine fortuitous linguistic possibilities, likely runic relationships, and desirable paths of design. Likely so as to not blow the poor fellow sky high the first time he tries to form a sentence in the language held in far grander tongues than those of mere mortals. Dropping a preposition could either make you look the fool in the eyes of the gods or worse.

Besides it seems somewhat facetious to say that the 'tongue of the world's founding what molds reality to match it' has simple translations compactable into a single volume. However, it does seem unlikely a wizard is going to need to refresh his memory every time he wants to cast the same light spell he has been using since day one (the only reason DnD even adopted this system was game design and Vance's Dying Earth series.)

I would assume that unless you choose to start the game in year 1 a great number of words will already have been conveniently collected and studied for you by NPC sages, wizards, ect... Questing for some of the more esoteric or unknown words would be an option I imagine but it would probably be more convenient to just find some great mage and convince him to teach you enough words to get by.

Besides its not like the mayor or king of some town is just going to give you a spell word for an ogre head or some predetermined number of wolf tails. If you are questing for spell words you would likely be doing your own research like exploring ancient ruins, climbing mountains to commune with gods and prophets, searching libraries and temples, or going on vision/dreamquests to unseen lands and higher planes.

Ah the ever longed for WIZARD/DEBUG MODE many similar games allow spawning and level/tile manipulation modes for testing purposes
I would mostly use such a system to test new critters, objects and such. Making sure they react correctly and don't die because I forgot to give them lungs or some such nonsense. It would also speed the discovery and testing of bugs.

The yellow god was not included in the game, every color magic has a corresponding Ancient. In an Escapist interveiw a fifth yellow god was confirmed:

Besides Wikipedia spoiled me after I beat the campaign tonight and something felt... lacking. I looked it up and sure enough I've got more Darkness coming on. Just hope those Silicon Knights stop fooling around with Too Human and get sequential on this series.

Anyhow back on topic, The predictability of magic is a problem but this is why I suggested a randomized magic or rune language (perhaps the primal code of the universe.) Even without skill related failure (always a probability) there is that knowledge boundary to surpass. Not only must you discover and collect magic words but discovering their meaning through scientific trial and error could be hazardous to, well... everything.

Chut'turga?

Yes, that fellow (Chattur'gha according to Wikipedia.) Aparently there is at least one more unnamed (and likely even more) Ancient with the color yellow but that is neither here no there.

Ironicly only reason I even entered this thread was I was finally finishing off Ulyaoth tonight on my first play through. I started the game last summer but got stuck for months in the final summoning not realizing I had to sneak past the purple-rune giant-worm pit.

One of my hopes for this game is that we will one day be able to enact such multi-generational plots and long term changes. The Ancient city buried under the middle east was one of my favorite levels in any game mainly because you keep returning to it and seeing how things had changed. Perhaps one day we will be able to create such fortresses.

Indeed I like this idea. If we could combine it with a sanity system, magic flows (or winds of watever) an engraving system I would like this. However, like someone said it could be seen as too restrictive or formulaic, or cheep (seriously if you have enough magic power to pull a 17 word long spell sentence out your ass then you probable deserve it.)
I could see this becoming a programing problem with word combos becoming too complex for rational people. However that is why you use randomizers. Let the game decide what a particular word means in this world, attach spheres too it and then proceed to extrapolate out possible effects of the most likely combinations. Then comes the real fun as player characters and NPCs try to figure out what each word means without blowing themselves and the local landscape to hell, or summoning an elder god, or going mad, or drowning in pudding, or turning into a butterfly...
