How does C's (and related) lack of memory protection make it "fast"? What kind of performance-enhancing stuff can you pull in C that wouldn't work in a more-protected language?

The Idea Pool is a bit of a fixture of my mind. It takes in thoughts and breaks them up into their constituent thought fragments. It then whirlpools those fragments around so that they'll eventually stick to each other and produce a viable idea, that I'll then copy onto my to-do list. That, too, gets put into the Idea Pool sometimes.

It's constantly mutating things, and there's no concept of ownership. It's a complete free-for-all in there. It makes it utterly impossible to figure out if I've done an idea before, because each idea likely has tens of unmarked fragments that were used elsewhere, often in related-but-not-identical places. I experience deja vu often for this reason.

Strange. Are they all owned by the same company/hosted on the same server or something? It seems odd otherwise that these otherwise-unrelated websites would go down all at the same time.

This is what happens when you let novice engravers carve the runes on the walls.

The idea of negative skill is something that was brought up in a DF Talk, yes. Just the idea of an engraving so bad that it decreases room value is pretty entertaining. I'd do it just so that I could read the descriptions. I'm imagining one right now:

"This is purportedly an engraving of a dwarf and an elf. The dwarf is supposedly attacking the elf, but the engraving is so lacking in quality that it is not clear what is going on."

I have nothing of value to add, but I want to add to that music analogy: pushing for realism ignoring all else is basically like distributing 5.1 384 KHz, 24-bit FLAC audio, recorded on state-of-the-art equipment... but the audio's all fart noises. I'll never get to hear 90% of that audio, but it sure as hell is prime quality, surround fart noises.

I know databending looks like magic, but I swear it's based on the fact that a computer only sees numbers, and all interpretations of such are merely that, interpretations. If you can get the computer to interpret data differently from its intent, there's all manner of fun you could have with that. I prefer working with raw uncompressed data, but there might be a way to corrupt a JPEG but still have it be a valid file, at least in theory.

Now, finding ways to do it such that the end result ends up being suggestive... I don't know.

• Pipe raw video data into uwuify? That yields seizure-inducing results. I should probably upload the results of that one to YT for shits and giggles.

• Paulstretch? Attempts to do it with video data aren't encouraging. Constant vertical desync; 'rolling'. The related version of Paulstretching each frame is also dubious at best. No continuity between frames; causes seizures.

• Paulstretch a frame, then use EbSynth to paint over the Paulstreched image... I haven't tried that one. I'll try it at least once, but no promises.

I'm trying to imagine how you'd do pornographic things with a DVD case or DVD, but knowing Rule 34 artists, the question is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. The home video pressings of Shrek aren't all the same age, though. The earliest 2001 DVD and VHS releases are old enough to be in porn, but even the slightly later 2003 ones are not yet legally eligible for the porn treatment. The August 19, 2003 DVD pressing's the closest, though.

Welp, if I see porn of people fucking Shrek VHSes and DVDs, I'll assume that it was my fault for bringing it up.

Mechanically, it's the OP of each thread editing the "Subject" of the first post, which changes the default subject line for all replies.

Which means that this thread's title will never be changed barring some action from The Toad, since the original account associated with this thread was erased on request. That made a whole new mess in the form of the Great Disorder (a name I chose as an ad hoc thing; I'd imagine there's other names), which messes with quote links in the threads that they were active in, but I think that's a story for another time.

I know that there's at least one other active thread whose title is very unlikely to change: the word association thread. This wouldn't normally be an issue, but considering that its title has "2^15.57" in it, which ≈ 48640, that's kinda outdated now that the thread has 64154 (≈ 2^15.97) posts as of this writing. I don't know Skyrunner at all, I came here long after their time, but I assume they just left at some point.

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

I like how my brain's reaction to listening to lossless versions of songs I've listened to is "Wow, I can hear all the detail in the music now!". I'm sure there's a difference, but without ABX testing, I'm not drawing any conclusions. Not that I'll do ABX tests until I get my KZs in the mail, so I guess I can live in this fantasy for a bit longer. It's just the sudden placebo effect that's getting me.

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

It's dawning on me that my trusty HTPC (that totally isn't a piracy proxy) has a dying boot SSD. Normally, I'd go "oh well, time to replace it!" but considering that I don't have physical access, I can't exactly do much about it apart from backing up its contents.

Now I get to see a computer basically dying in front of me, and I can't do anything about it. It's already showing 2 symptoms of disk failure; it's mounting read-only half the time, and it's showing some 3000 bad sectors on the SSD, rising on the last full self-test. I'm legitimately sad. I'm mourning over this computer already. It's like having a pet suffering from cancer; it's about the same situation for all I care.

That only solves the backup problem. As for replacing the SSD, I'm pretty sure I'm basically done for there until I can have physical access to it in a few months' time. Am I right on that suspicion?

I run fsck on the disk on each boot. Does that count? There's nothing important on it apart from a vaguely customized Linux Mint install. Unfortunately, I don't have physical access to the HTPC, so I can't do anything about this apparently failing SSD right now.
