Life Advice / Re: *Sigh* Computer problem I cannot solve...
« on: September 19, 2009, 08:28:55 am »
Yup, I checked. And Windows had been reinstalled twice to no effect at all. It is most likely a hardware/driver problem, but I checked those too. It leaves just the power supply, CPU and motherboard.

Anyway, I've spent a lot today, and now I'm posting from a new computer, downloading Windows Update (87 items before even getting to Vista SP2).

New motherboard, new CPU, new tower, new RAM, new PSU, one new HDD. That gives me new a working computer to test my old parts.

I'll post pictures of my new computer later...

I think he means the one with ilwrath

Yes, I know. It's the first battle x2yzh9's talking about. You can go to Pluto first for a new ship before fighting it.

It's possible to kill it with flag ship too with a little practice.

Or you just charge it (if flagship is spawned in the correct direction), and fire repeatedly once it's in your range of fire. If you don't miss, you can kill it faster than it can kill you.

Life Advice / *Sigh* Computer problem I cannot solve...
« on: September 19, 2009, 12:40:45 am »
My computer started acting strange a month ago. Bootup becomes very slow - after BIOS it takes a few minutes for the Vista loading bar to appear, and then, even more minutes to hit the login page. After login it takes a very long time to start the virus shield (Trend Micro Internet Security), and computer is not very responsible for a while. After a while, everything goes back to normal. Diagnostic - Performance log will show startup as degradation, followed by a number of completely random components responsible for the slowdown. One of svchost, taskmgr, explorer.exe, virus shield's service, and even a cryptic "CPU resources overutilized, cannot locate cause".

I did everything I could think of. Check RAM - check. Scan HDD (including surface scan) - check. Full virus/spyware scan - check. Reinstall Vista - check. Boot in safe mode - check. Disable all unnecessary services and processes - check. Flash BIOS to latest version - check. Experiment with various drivers for video card, network card, etc. - check.

Nothing works. Even in safe mode it's only a little bit faster to boot.

At this point, I believe it is hardware related... perhaps in my motherboard, an ASUS P5K. I have other computers, but those are older ones and cannot exchange components to test.

I think I'll just throw money at it. I'll go build a new computer, with new CPU, motherboard, RAM and a new HDD. Then I'll slowly move things over and see where the problem really is.

I had planned to wait for Windows 7 before building a new computer, but today I spent 3 hours to get my computer to boot. I think I've had enough...

*Sigh* I've been spending a lot lately... my O2mini broke, external speaker won't make any more sound - USD800 for a HTC Touch Pro 2.

Anyone have some cheats for this game? When i searched their forum all i found was reply's to their posts by angry, fat. fucktarded people.

I think a list of rainbow worlds, and a list of mineral/bio data rich worlds is all the power you will ever need.

My current game benefits hugely from my last game's knowledge. I know exactly where to go... greatly reduce wasted time and fuel looking for places to mine and hunt.
I mean i literally cant even get past the first melee.

The hint is go to Pluto first... it's a tiny purple dot on the upper left of the Sol system. There's a much better ship (at this stage of the game) there waiting for you. Once you get the ship, use the Roaster menu and transfer people from your flagship to it.

This ship is fast and nimble... you can dance around the first enemy ship, keeping just out of reach and fire the secondary weapon which is a homing missile.

Also, remember to save before returning radioactive minerals to the starbase. So you can try again if the battle starts with you spawned in a disadvantaged position.

Aqizzar: On topic, we need to find a way to have DRM without having this DRM harm innocent people like you. (I was wondering of letting the whole game be free, but allow for online verification for content such as secret novellas. That's not technically DRM, but it's a way of rewarding people for paying for the game, rather than punishing those that don't. See Good Old Games, for instance.)

Sorta like Stardock's GalCiv. But I still do not like that; because it still requires to company to be alive and well so that you can properly use a product you've purchased. If the company went belly up you can no longer update/reinstall.

I have no problem with CD checks actually... my beef is with online authentications. If I purchase something, I want to be able to use it in the future, whether the company selling me the product is still around or not. I'll handle the hardware problem and companys should keep their DRMs out of my way.

Windows activation is bad enough; but at least Microsoft is HUGE (huge like no game companies can compare), and without the OS there's no gaming anyway. I don't want this trend to spread to every other piece of software I purchased.

You ever hear about the Electronic Frontier Foundation?

From their website they point out such other EULA gems as:

Do not criticize this product publicly.

and

Do not use this product with any other vendor's products.

ROFL! Which company wrote that EULA? EA? Ubisoft?

Nope that wasn't the one I meant. The following tip is spoilered because it may be giving away too much I'm not sure. Put simply it should identify exactly which comment is important but it doesn't replicate the exact information provided by that comment in game. So you'll still have to hear the comment in game but if you read it you'll know it's important.

Aaanyhow without getting myself a headache from how experience ruining this might prove to be (or not to be)

Oh yeah I noticed that. But that's before I realized I can press SPACE and review the conversation... I was trying to write down the important bits as they speak (Umagh and other races' whereabouts), and missed that one. :-*

Edit:
I have a little success at super melee training. I can kill a Marauder with Eluder now, though having two Eluders would be safer than just one. I kept moving left and right to avoid the blades, and pumping out lots of BUTT. Strangely the AI never uses FRIED to defend against the BUTTs...

The ease of hacking the client does not stop doing so being illegal.

Well, they want to stop/deter people from doing it... the illegal status won't solve the problem completely. Making it harder to hack, and updating their server and Steam client will keep it secure for longer.

If you ask me, the Steam client should have nothing special in them.

Since it's a client, it runs on the client's computer. If someone were to hack it, they can. Without cryptographic hardware installed, the best the Steam client can do is just to scramble the data, scatter it, and keep it in memory as short a period as possible, making it more time consuming to hack.

Therefore all the important parts, the verification, authentications and such must and will be performed on the server.

Which makes the Steam client nothing but a frontend with a cryptograhic library to chat with the server.

So porting it should not be a major issue... the more likely reason is that most of the games Steam supports are Windows games, giving them little incentive to port the Steam client to other platforms.

I'm interested. As you can see in my campaign game thread, I'm in need of some super melee practice. I'm in timezone GMT+8.

However I think lag might present a serious problem... but it's at least worth it to try. Perhaps a proper delay setting will make it less painful.

Just say no to online authentication.

You are not buying a game. You're renting it. When they decide to shutdown the authentication server (going bankrupt, got bought out by another company, cutting cost, trying to push a new version, etc.), you will no longer be able to install the game.

Thats the point. Its a race against time. Unless you spoiler yourself, your gonna lose races.

Hmmm... I don't have a lot of clues as to where the races are too.

I think I'm going to practice killing Marauder with Cruiser and Eluder in super melee... then I'll start a new game. I want to save the ZFP. With better recon data (from my current game) hopefully I can do it next time.
