DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What's your secret to dwarf management?

There is one thing that has not been mentioned.

Use Dwarf Foreman.
Its an external program but it will save you HOURS of tedious job changes.

You can find it by going to the thread on my sig or using google for "Dwarf foreman"

I know about Dwarf Foreman for a long time... but I am not too sure about it, because it says it is prone to crash sometimes... I'd hate to repeat something I did 20 minutes ago because of a crash.

Alright... I start a server, I can then join the room, but I can't change any options.  All I can do is chat with myself.

The server room interface is mouse-driven... press F1 to start the game (look lower right corner).

Is there a one-on-one mode? I could use some training with one AI, instead of being ganged on in Survival mode...

I have another question: Is there a way to toggle the auto lock-on on/off? I want to use the terrain to my advantage for the sniper-like mechas, but I can't when the camera keeps turning like that.

I'm feeling very stupid right now... there's a manual.pdf in the folder!

Hold down S will turn off the target lock. UP+S will change to a long range target , DOWN+S will change to a close range one.

There are other special moves too... so if you haven't seen it yet, go read it.

So that's what those "s" blocks do...

I usually just let my AI teammates deal with the other AI and personally go after the super battleships.

Yeah, I walked into one and a new unit appears above my head.

Life and Mana are different from HP and MP... Life and Mana are used to calculate how much HP and MP you will have. How? I have no idea...

My computer can't handle blitz mode as well... but I think the real cause is the AI's abusing all those summon power-ups? My team's greatly outnumbered!

Edit: I'm loving this game... I'm playing it with Gundam00's "Ash like snow" in background...

F6 doesn't turn auto lock-on off... though I found F4 toggles bloom on units, and F5 toggles shadow.

Thanks for the link... it gave me a lot of information about the game.

Just choose a mech that is flight based, they get tons of flight duration.

I found my problem is I don't know how to activate flight mode. I have to press jump again in the air + direction to enter flight mode. Then I can fly as long as I still have thruster bar left.

I have another question: Is there a way to toggle the auto lock-on on/off? I want to use the terrain to my advantage for the sniper-like mechas, but I can't when the camera keeps turning like that.

Pumpkins will no longer be a threat when you have the Sage's Helm... it allows you to see invisible creatures. You can exchange for it with some small medals.

Do you feel the duration of flight/dash is way too short?

I also hate when my target avoids my attacks by going into "wake up invulnerability period"...

I rename them because I tend to alter everyone's labor list to make them more efficient... then instead of having to look into each dwarf to see what labors they have activated, I give them custom profession names so I can tell with just the "u" list.

I like to control their labors... immigrant fisherdwarves? I need no stinking fisherdwarves! *changes all of them into haulers and give them profession name "Haul"*.

I got tired of my last fortress (magma pipe too far away, already took years and still not enough to start forging). I flipped the "Drown them all" lever, but soon got bored waiting for the whole fort to flood, I abandoned.

Maybe I'll try a more hands-off style this time... I just found a nice spot. Magma pipe (on ground level too), river, sand, moderate trees. The only bad thing is it's too flat. Time for an above ground glass fortress...

I used to play with population capped at a fairly low number (at first 25, then 60 and 80), but recently I tried to keep it at default. I end up with 163 dwarves in my latest fortress.

My old style is to immediately rename my dwarves with custom profession names, to indicate what I want them to do (instead of what they're good at). For example, I'll name my starting 7 dwarves like this:

Magnus McPick, 1 Miner
Glimi, 1 Axe Hauler
Griswald McPeasant, 1 Haul Trade

So I can immediately tell they're a miner, an axe-using soldier and a trader who hauls when there's no caravans. The numbers indicate which "generation" the dwarf is from. Then as migrants came, I rename them all as well. And then I change their labor list to match their profession names.

But that's getting harder and harder... as the population increases, changing names, labor lists and even giving them all enough jobs are very difficult.

What's your secret to managing a large number of dwarves?

Duplicate statues give little museum rank... so if you have new statues you should sell the duplicates. Museum has a large but still limited item capacity.

They may give little museum rank, but they still give museum rank, and I haven't hit the item cap yet... so I'll continue adding another statue and card or two every time I pass by :P

I have an item management nightmare at my museum... I will need to spend a lot of time to get all the cards and statues organized...

I've heard that higher level rogues (rogue master or something like that...?) have both high charisma and high negotiations kills to start with and so are great choices for shopkeepers. I've never had a shop myself, though, only museums... filled with Gwen the Innocents and Mia the Cat Ladies, with the occasional other creature.
