But he can't get to the other side of the boulder. It's in a corner.

As gimlet said, he doesn't need to. When you squeeze, you can occupy the same square as the boulder.

Only wand of striking and force bolt spell can break boulders. You can drop everything you own (at the door or first square of the shop), and squeeze past the first boulder. Then you can push away the second one.

If you have slightly heavier items like armor, you have no chance of carrying it and squeezing past. You will have to find a pickaxe/wand of striking once you're outside.

Nymphs are most of the time generated sleeping... if you don't do noisy things they will continue to sleep, and you can just leave them be, or grab a stack of thrown weapons (enough number to kill the nymph with your chance to hit), stand 5 squares or so away, and throw. Preferably you use stones or daggers, because they won't disappear. The nymph will be too busy picking them up than to close the gap between you, allowing you to kill them from a distance. She might try to run when low on HP though, so kill her quick.

Noisy things include but are not limited to kicking items and doors, falling down, triggering a mine, some musical instruments.

Also worthy of mentioning is that you can apply a mirror. The nymph will be distracted and take the mirror only. If you have a wooden harp, playing it have a chance (level and dex based) to pacify nearby nymphs.

My genocide list...

L (lich and master lich)
R (rust monster and most importantly disenchanter)
h (Mind flayer and master mind flayer. Sorry my bearded friends)
; (Eels and stuff that drowns you)

I hold onto genocide scrolls after the list, to instantly kill things that trouble me.

That is, if a wand of turn undead will indeed revive dead pets.
It is true. And not only pets, it will revive any corpse aimed at, and revitalizes eggs.
You mean I can turn those eggs I was going to eat into actual creatures?
Yes... when eggs hatch in your backpack, there's a chance that it will recognize you as mom or dad, and become your pet.

Also, don't eat eggs... you never know if it is a cockatrice egg or not. Rotten eggs also make you dizzy and vomit, which is not good if you get into a tough fight during that time.

I usually either keep eggs in open inventory (hoping for a pet), break it (kick or throw) or let pets eat it.

I just started out with a scroll of genocide. I don't know how to express my glee in text, so I won't. I'll just be my wizard. And perhaps genocide something.

Or you may want to hold on to it, bless it, and only use it when some kind of monsters really irritates you. Just don't forget you have one, and don't blank it accidentally. (I've done both before) :P

Kitten keeps eatin all mah corpses.
If you don't need a pet at all times for protection, you can let the floating eye paralyze your pet first.

Knights are a great newbie role: Excalibur
Excalibur has one bad effect - it's lawfulness and holiness irritates monsters. Monsters can track your position easier when you are wielding it.

Hey, if you win a full ID from a blessed ?ofID, does it also do stuff in (nested) bags?
Nope... you have to keep everything in open inventory. Find a safe place and drop already ID'ed stuff first.

In other news, a high-level ranger fell down stairs and died recently. Damned naga hatchlings chasing me off...
My pets keep attacking non-hostile gnomes, dwarves, and hobbits, but they won't attack the leprechauns prancing around and stealing my gold. Useless.
I managed to trap a leprechaun in a room. We danced around and I shot some arrows at it. At one point, it just disappeared. I blocked the doorway, but it must have teleported, not been invisible.
I really hate leprechauns. They'd better be glad Nethack doesn't have a combat system like DF's.

Leprechauns teleports after they steal gold. If you have no gold to steal, they can't teleport. You can either:
1) Go upstairs/downstairs and drop all your gold there. Kill the leprechaun and return for them.
2) Put all your gold inside a container, be it your bag or a chest.
3) E-word. Then let your pet handle it, or shoot it. If you write in dust, write a lot of E-words in a row, so some would remain in effect when some errodes.
4) Put down all your gold, and put E-word on the square. Then go after the damn thing.

Pets engage things according to their current HP against the monster's level. Gnomes are difficulty class 3, leprechauns are 4, so your pet should attack leprechauns as well. Likely the leprechaun keeps teleporting around so your pet can't reach it (being next square to it doesn't mean your pet has a chance to move yet, leprechaun has speed comparable to pets).

Had a promising archaeologist going, level 9 with seven points of protection.  ...snip... when I descend a staircase to a troll with a wand of create monster.

A troll is difficulty 9... unless special rules apply (e.g. you have the amulet of yendor), a monster is strong enough for generation when average of your level and dungeon level >= monster difficulty.

You could be a victim of a polymorph trap...

Solo'ed T2 all the way (Roarmulus Twins) for the first time... revived once for 5, cause I was held in place by three spiders when the laser came. Found Silversix recipe on the way, but turns out AH's so saturated it's not much of a profit (just one thousand), so I learned it myself.

I didn't have the patience to wait alone for arenas... there are three along the way.

Also, what should I bless? I missed the whole 'HOLY WATER IS AWESOME' until now...

Pretty much everything... more blessed items in your inventory means you have more buffer to suck up curses thrown your way.

But if you have to choose:
0. A big stack of uncursed potions of water. Self-replicating holy water for the win!
1. Unicorn horn. Uncursed ones don't work frequently enough.
2. Worn items, especially those with bad effects when cursed, like a ring of teleport, polymorph, etc. Two-handed weapons are a priority too, since if cursed you won't have any free hand to use stuff, say, the bag containing your remove curse scrolls.
3. Bag of Holding. Blessed one is even lighter, while cursed ones have a chance to destroy items when you retrieve them.
4. Luckstone. Uncursed luckstone makes both good and bad luck not timeout.
5. Most scrolls work better when blessed. A few are better when cursed though.
6. Most potions also work better when blessed.

Also, I don't record item identification... I only use #name for that, since there is mind flayer and amnesia.

I have to make a new reply cause the board won't let me modify it. "You've already submitted this post", it said.

I use a spreadsheet to keep important information discovered, e.g.

1. Layout. Where is Mine entrance, Oracle, Big Room, Castle, Home portal, etc.
2. Notable features, e.g. fountains, sinks, thrones, vaults, poly trap, etc.
3. Shops.
4. Intrinsic gained.
5. Last prayed turn number.
6. Altars/temples and their alignment.
7. Locations of my stashes, whether they are on the ground, in a container, has a E-word or not.
8. Species genocided and wish used.
9. Long/short term goals, like going for a poly-pile or need to find reflection.

I probably sound like a loser, but I just physically remembered the location of each notable thing, my stats, and whatnot, although I know how you work Kc, that scroll of amnesia is always right around the corner.

Although I did use the \ button to remember what identified items were, since the random appearances makes a difference sometimes.

I have tried using the naming function in-game to save information... but that quickly became way too troublesome to update.

Also I play two characters simultaneously - one on PC, one on smartphone, and I don't bother to sync the save files. Sometimes I might put a character on hiatus and start another class for fun or experiment. With a spreadsheet I can come back, look at the spreadsheet and inventory, and pick the game up where I left it.

If you die in a store, the game clearly tells you that the shopkeeper takes all your possessions. So no need to feel guilty or anything using your pets to steal. :D
