DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Marksdwarves and Z-levels
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:24:00 pm »
My marksdwarves shoot down through fortifications, with teh blind spot caveat.  An l-shaped catwalk seems to give them the angles they need.  I have only shot down 1 z-level no more than that and it works great.  Yes the goblins can shoot up, and yes they will kill/injure some of your dwarves.  But war his hell and coffins are cheap.

Where is your marksdwarf tower when you need it?  Any goblins within bolt range of my walls are hamburger!

Let all of your NON-CAT pets out of the cages.  Cats will eventually destroy your game, so keep those cats locked up except for a few male ones.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Burial issue

I thought a dead dwarf + available coffin combination just triggers a "move item to stockpile" kind of command, so if a dwarf becomes NO JOB, he searches for the nearest job.  If that's a dead dwarf that needs burial, then he buries that dwarf.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Need Help w/ colossus situation!
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:10:00 pm »
OK!  Here's what happened!  I recruited all my civvies and told them to grab plate mail, shields and random weapons.  Then I stationed them inside the barracks and opened the drawbridgbe.

The colossus came in and of course three dumb marksdwarves started following him, shooting.  He flung them away, 3 dead marksdwarves.

Then he crushed my drawbridge and Smashed up my bonecrafter workshop and stomped my trade depot, then he came inside, and set off 13 stonefall traps!  Almost no damage, but a brown wound to the head.  Two brave speardwarves ran out and got seriously wounded.  Then he barreled right thorugh the barracks and set out for the main stairs.  By then a mob of fresh recruits, mostly unarmed wrestled him and my three miners (super tough, super agile) showed up with axes and pounded the hell out of him until he died!  So only 4 more dead (all soldiers), and 4 more wounded (including my legendary engraver).

I am rebuilding now, and pretty pleased that I only lost peasants/soldiers.  Thanks for your help!

Will 10 of them in a row be enough?

DF Gameplay Questions / Need Help w/ colossus situation!
« on: April 09, 2008, 01:34:00 pm »
Hello!  I have a little bit of a colossus situation here.  I am getting attacked by a colossus and I need to survive!

My Fortress:

Population:  75
Trained Marskman 6 left alive
Trained Spearman 0 left alive

My Fortress Layout

Fully walled outside area protected by maze filled with chained dogs then drawbridge.  There is a catwalk above the maze.
The outside area leads to the only fortress entrance, which is protected by a 10x2 hallway of stonefall traps, then a barracks and stairs to all levels of my fortress.  If he gets to those stairs, I’m pretty much screwed.

What’s happened so far:

*  Colossus showed up, I buttoned up the drawbridge and called on 12 marksman and 6 spearman.  Spearman assembled on safe side of drawbridge, waiting for it to open.  Dogs ready in maze.  12 marskman on the catwalk above the maze (fortification).
*  All troops equipped in place and I open the drawbridge.  Spears stay where they are, colossus approaches maze.   8 of the marksman start shooting off the catwalk, the other 4 go get a drink or something.  Plink plink, no damage to colossus, many, many iron, steel, and copper arrows bounce of colossus.
*  Colossus continues through maze killing all wardogs along the way.  Spearmen rush into maze and surround colossus.  They get thrown around and smashed.  Colossus continues through maze.  He may get in before I can raise the drawbridge.
*  I send in 6 marksman to slow him down, it works, the drawbridge closes and all marksmen  are killed.  Colossus is now standing in middle of dead dwarf and dog bodies in the maze.  Drawbridge is up.

This is the situation now.  I am not sure how to resolve this.  I have some ideas.

*  Wait, maybe the colossus will go away?
*  Draft ½ of the dwarves as marksman, and the rest as other weapons (any ones better against a colossus).   Wait until they are fully equippend then station them inside the barracks at the end of the 10x2  stone trap entrance.   Then open the drawbridge.  Let colossus come through and run through 10 stone fall traps, then swamp him with all my dwarves before he gets to the stairs.
*  Have my miners/masons build an additional maze at the entrance to the fort.  Build more stonefall traps so the colossus needs to go through even more stonefall traps before he gets to my fort.  Then let him in as before.
*  Some other genius plan that you guys tell me to do!

Thanks so much in advance, I don’t want to feel the fun of losing just yet!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cannot get past the first 2-3 years...
« on: April 08, 2008, 03:36:00 pm »
I farm almost exclusively outside.  I just create a 100% walled off area on the surface above my food prep area.  I almost exclusively farm wild strawberries. By year 2 I have one full time farmer, one full time brewer, and one full time cook that cooks the booze.  (use the Z menu to allow cooking of booze.)  By year 3, I usually have a 20x20 stockpile full of booze and a 10x10 stockpile full of prepared meals.

An experienced farmer can make 4-5 food from one seed and then an experienced brewer can then multiply that into a very full barrel of booze.  Finally an experienced cook will turn that into  a megastack of prepared meals for your food stockpile that will take forever for your dwarves to eat!

A more fun way to defend your fortress is with a maze and fortified bridge over the maze, instead of traps.  When they start going through the maze, station your archers on the fortified bridge.  Then there is more excitement because your dwarves stand a chance of getting injured/killed and they will get lots of XP firing crossbow bolts at invaders in your maze.  Chain wardogs to the insides of your maze to slow the enemy down.  The chans and the dogs will not block caravans so don't worry about that.  Neither will the dead bodies, but you might generate some vomit lol.

Lazing around is not a dwarf state.  Are they resting, on break, or No Job?

Try to set up little farming/fishing/mining villages outside your town and keep them  defended against raids.  You will have to spread your defenses much more thinly and the goblin raids will be much more painful.

Is this a new feature?  I'm running on a february version and I've never had dogs adopt anyone, only cats!  If dogs can adopt, then you can get dogsplosion as well as catsplosion!  Aargh!!!!!

In the kitchen menu You must disallow everything for cooking but booze.  Cook booze.  It's Very simple. A good brewer will make a barrel of booze which has many booze items in it.  Then a cook will make a stack of food which is a multiple of the original boozes.  I currently have one legendary gatherer supplying enough booze and food for my entire fortress (75 dwarves!)  It is my only source of food!  I have been farming only pig tails and dimple cups for the last 2 years, and I don't brew the pig tails!

Cooking Meat, seeds, Plants, etc  Don't produce anywhere near the output that cooking booze does, it's just a good way to get rid of excess.
