DF Community Games & Stories / [Story] Of Mountains and Rainbows
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:12:26 pm »
Here is a Creation story of a Dwarven Civilization. Enjoy.

There was the Sun and the Earth, the two great powers. The Life-giver and the Life-Bringer. The Sparkling Mother, Ber Gusilral, turned her face to see the light of Vîr Edim Immast, the colorful Father, and absorbed some of his essence. Deep in her recesses, a child formed. Etur Uzoldoren Atír. Ber Gusilral watched her child mature, and he charmed her, for he was like her, and of her. Vîr Edim Immast was jelous of the bond between the mother and son, and forced his light upon her to bring about one such as he. He cast himself over her loving peaks, bringing a shadow upon her essence. Twins were begotten of this foul deed. Zon Usenustuth and Tobul Mingkilrithlut, whom were night and day. In the light of his father, Tobul Mingkilrithlut brought fourth foul creatures, whom knew only to devour. He sent them into his mother's life-giving fluid, polluting her spirit. Her other son, Zon Usenustuth, came about to her, and worked to shelter her from the harsh glare of the Bright One. Even the strengths of her new son Zon Usenustuth couldn't keep the light out forever, and once again Vîr Edim Immast shed his light upon her, and her son Sodel Likot Ducim came about. The new son choose to side with his mother, and joined his strengths with Etur Uzoldoren Atír and Zon Usenustuth to create the Dwarves. With their help, using her own flesh, her spirit could be protected from the light. Tobul Mingkilrithlut saw this, and reported to his father. Between the two of them, they created the Elves, whom they infused with desires counter to the safety of the Dwarves. It was this that allowed her first daughter. Doren Limârosram to be born. Doren Limârosram wasn't interested in defending her mother, nor in helping her father. It was she who spawned the Kobold, for it was she who wanted the possessions of the dwarves and the elves, and the essences of father, mother, and brothers. Tobul Mingkilrithlut saw the creation of Doren Limârosram, and took it for his own, corrupting it to become the Goblin, and his fish creation ajusted to become the Demon. Sodel Likot Ducim refused to be outdone, and crafted his own new creation, the human, and thousands of other creatures, such as the bear and the raccoon. It was his first solo creation that thought to create a bronze statue that spawned the Colossi. Etur Uzoldoren Atír had grown bored, and animated it on a whim to create humor. This time was not a time of peace from Vîr Edim Immast, however, and Ber Gusilral decided to come up with a plan to end it. She created a trap, and placed a part of her essence as bait. He took the bait, and became trapped into a predictable cycle, so that she can always stay a step ahead of him with no effort. The essence quickened, however, and a child was born of the trap. Shadmal Shadmalamug, the lost one, came into being alone, with no family to identify with. She decided to make her own. She crafted the dragon to be her family, and so brought the attention of the firstborn and prankster Etur Uzoldoren Atír upon her. It was he who gave them many heads, for the hilarity of the self-arguments, just as he created numerous other hybrid critters.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Dwarven King and His Family
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:54:07 pm »
So, in my fortress, I nicked an adamantine vein, and now I've got the dwarf king sapping my fortress.

A weird thing though, his wife and 10 kids didn't come along. Do they come along when you get one by non-adamantine means?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stretch Tailstrong
« on: July 20, 2008, 03:55:37 pm »
So I spent this weekend planning and executing my fortress for this version. It's a no-immigration fortress, but my planning went out of control... 150 can live there comfortably.

Anyway, I finally finished my irrigation plan. On level 7, there is a cave river. I have it tapped and flood gated. This drops into a channel that disperses this water into many different uses, from perpetual obsidian factory to a system to flood my entry hall. In fact, if I opened the inlet and shut the outlet, I could flood the entire fortress.

So, It went well, I finally got it up, and ran the trial system. The water GUSHED into it. I hadn't realised a Cave River source has that much pressure. The entire system was full almost instantly and it started pushing out of the system. I had to shut it off and race against the tide to open all my emergency pressure releases to save the fortress from destruction. On the bright side, my well rooms are full now.

But that's not what this is about. You see, after I had gotten the system mostly cleaned out and ready for pressure plate automatic shutoffs, I noticed a few lurkers in the top area. I tapped the cave river with fortifications, but somehow, two lizardmen and a giant toad were now in my water system. The best I can tell is the water pressure was so great at the point of the tap that the three creatures were compressed to the size of a spegetti noodle and shot through. Now I have to train an army to get up there, and in the meantime, dratted trees are growing to block my system!

Other Games / A Wolf Sim
« on: July 02, 2008, 06:30:29 pm »
So I was playing some random game I came across called "Wolf" (From Sanctuary Woods). I was quite surprised that a game with that title actually had something to do with wolves. Well, I played it for some time and ran into things that annoyed me, so naturally I looked for a more modern version. It was interesting to attract a cult following somewhere...

Suprisingly, It didn't... But there was another game that could be considered a Successor. It's called "Wolf Quest"

Not as good as the abandoned "Wolf" game, but there it is. The strange game I found just recently while waiting for the next update on Dwarf Fortress.

It was posted In Spore's Forums, But I feel it deserves reposting, since it really grabs my goat. Poor Goat...

If only I had given that money to Toadyone, instead of Will Wright...
I should have supported Piracy and Toady over EA... Live and learn, and LONG LIVE THE AWESOMENESS THAT IS TOADYONE!

I will never make this mistake again, and vow now that the next time I will buy any electronic item for pleasure, I will have donated at least 5$ to toady for showing that greatness doesn't have to rob the poor.

In fact, I have a few extra dollars in my budget this month, and a few extra stamps... :)

Quote
For the second time in my life, I have run into an offline game that requires an Internet connection. The first one was Half Life 2. A story similar to the one below occurred then, but to me. This encouraged me to check the system requirements of every game I buy from that point on. Now I must read every line on the box to be sure that this situation doesn't happen. Now, on to the story...

June 18th was my brother's Birthday. He lives with my sister and her three sons. He makes about 800$ a month. 90% of every paycheck he gets goes to help support my sister. He is a much nicer person then me, I wouldn't bat an eye if my sister got kicked out on the street, with her kids. I feel it was her own fault for opening her legs. I am not nice to my sister. But this isn't a story about me or my dislike for her. It's about my too-kind-hearted brother...

Between my sister's paycheck and my brother's paycheck, my sister manages to keep the electric bill no more then a month behind, make the mortgage on her house, and occasionally pay another bill that has gone to collections. She is the classical example of a woman who would be on welfare... except she is too lazy to go down to human services and get welfare. She also doesn't go after the deadbeats that knocked her up for child support... Again this story isn't about her. This is all just establishing the environment.

My brother works over 20 miles from where he lives, and that 90% doesn't go to gas. Anyone with a simple calculator can find out how much money he has left over at the end of the month. He doesn't complain much, he has most of his basic needs met. He has clothes and a house, which is more then some can say.

My brother is the nicest person you can imagine. He sacrifices his free time, and all his free money, to support my sister. He doesn't ask for much, though he does look forward to things that to all appearances he should be able to pull off, given time. He's looking forward to spore, but I believe my action has just shattered the one thing he's been looking forward to for years.

My Brother's computer is a little better then mine, the last major purchase made by my mom before she left my sister to sink or swim on her own. My mom cashed out her 401k to be able to get away. Her retirement's gone, but some of it went to give my brother something to entertain himself in these horrid times.

I make 2000 a month, and support a wife and Kid on my income. I manage to scrape by without going into debt, as long as no disasters come. I sometimes can afford to take my nephews to the dollar movie, or go out on a date with my wife. It's tough, but I've had it tougher. At four months old I was living in a tent up in the nearby national forest. I am not as resolute as my brother though, I don't mind complaining when I don't get what I worked for, but this story isn't about me...

I bought Spore Creature Creator for myself. I have been looking forward to spore as long as my brother. I intended to buy a second copy and transport it on my flash drive to my brother, so he might play a part of a game he has been waiting for for years. The EA Download Manager kind of put a stop to that, fortunately before I blew my entire budget for his birthday. During my 30 minute Lunch break, I decided to look into buying it from a store, because I didn't believe it would only be downloads. I was right to look, but now I wish I hadn't.

My brother makes almost nothing, and it pours out into support of others. He can't get luxuries like Cable TV or whatnot. Internet is definitely a luxury, as anyone who has had the choice between eating or power can attest to. I had thought a game designed for single player would be safe, something he could play even though he doesn't have Internet. During my once bi-monthly visit down there, we could use my flash drive to exchange creations until spore came out. We even thought of a neat game, where we "Evolve" a creature from a base, making only minor changes, watching the different lines of them becoming steadily more complex.

There is this large snag in the plan though... The offline only game requires online verification.

My brother, whom pours his income into basic survival and only gets the rare treat of stuff sent to him, is unable at this time to play the game I bought for him from gamespot.

Why? To reduce piracy. The game HAS ALREADY BEEN PIRATED!, but a single player game in the store has been sold hiding the Internet requirement in small print outside of the smart place to put it, is unplayable by those who cannot afford an Internet connection... to reduce piracy.

Now, I face a dillima. I know for a fact that I can download a pirated copy and take it to my brother, and he would be able to play it, but a legitimate purchase made in a store... No play for my brother.

My solution is one that not everyone can face. I plan on spending 20$ over my monthly budget, putting my family on ramen for a week, so that I can spend the extra gas to get his computer, Log it in into my internet connection, and then return his computer.

If the game requires further validation besides initial activation, then I am out 31.30$ for nothing, which will be larger then my $11.30(tax). Why? Because EA is so afraid of piracy that they will do these kinds of actions.

When spore comes out, I will look for the Pirated Copy for my brother first, because it is better to risk viruses and lawsuits then spend money that I really shouldn't be spending anyway for a fancy bookcase weight.

If I hadn't been drooling over everything spore for years, maxis would have joined Everything Valve on my permanent "Not going to buy" list. As it is, I doubt that I will be buying maxis products very much anymore, since I won't bother to research the games... rather then face similar disappointment.

Is the piracy protection worth it? Ask the hackers that had cracked the game before it had even been released.

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."

In 15 years, will EA still support the registration system used in it's piracy protection? Thank goodness we've got such great crackers, so that the art that is video games remain capable of being spread, long after the fools and censors who cobbled them to horrid anti-piracy systems are long dead.

The Story of the founding of Migrursebshos Bërűl Egur:

It was a foolish expedition from the start. There were rumors of riches beyond our wildest dreams. Far to the north, where water was frozen for all but one day of the year, adamantine was found by a prospector. We packed a wagon, loaded it full of goods and set out for this new, wondrous place to found a glorious mine. We traveled north, and restocked in the human town of Xemcuro before heading to the sea. We spent a few days crafting a raft, thinking to save a few days of travel time this way. We loaded our supplies and wagons on the raft and launched. All was good for many days, but dwarves are not meant to be sailors. The seas steadily got rougher as we traveled, and in the end, our raft couldn't take the beating. Our raft was destroyed and all our supplies fell into the ocean. We clung to the only piece of wood large enough to support all seven of us, the wagon. We drifted for a few days, clinging desperately to the wagon, praying for salvation before we finally washed up on shore. We took stock and found all was lost except an Iron Pick, an Iron Anvil, and a Steel Battleaxe. We pulled the wagon up to the top of the cliff and had a look around. It didn't look good, in fact, it looked like we were stranded on an island, with no fresh water anywhere to be seen. The area has plenty of trees, as well as plants we can extract fluid from. It doesn't look like we will be able to do much for stone for awhile, but stone or no stone, if we work hard, this place, which we have decided to call "Migrursebshos Bërűl Egur" (Oceanmire the Bastion of Sorrow), might not kill us. Either way, it will be a long time before we can expect rescue, time to strike the bark!

This is another Community Fortress. Anyone who saw Mĺmgoztilat will remember I go a little overboard when it comes to community fortresses, I like people to know what is going on at a glance, which means page 1 takes forever to go through, and changes are displayed in the first post, and updated. So if you want to join in, scroll down to "Active Dwarves" and find one that has (Unclaimed) next to it, and say you want that dwarf. I display the "Name" in the middle of the actual name so that you know what their "birth" name is. If you just want to read what happened, scroll down past the 2nd post of this topic, because the history of this fortress starts there or later. So why another Community Fortress? Because it's fun to share your toys, of course!

Current Fortress Theme, as issued by Expedition Leader ňnul "Anilerar" Etesilral:
Gain Access to Stone (Dig down through the Aquifers until stone is reached)
Anilerar: "We can't burn wood on wood, get those windmills up, build them walls, strike that earth!"

Hello Everyone. New kind of fortress game. 6 different fortresses on one 5x5 map.

Each fortress lead dictates to me to get it's fortress to manufacture trade goods, trade, construct, and generally operate. I will monitor things as told by the leads to monitor. Fortresses can also buy enemies captured by the "trade group" to be released on the other fortresses. I expect that not a single fortress will last very long. If a fortress dies off, a new dwarf can be sent down to take over. Who knows, it may even be close to habitable... Or it could be a lava-flooded pit of doom... Either way...

So, here it is, the Hydra Fortress 'Rërithnicat Geshud Zarut'.

Notable Events of the past-
The Lava Tube Incident
In early 1052, the Miner/Engraver Urvad Idenaknűn finished carving a fortification next to the magma pool, releasing lava into the tunnel that lead to the Magma Workshop Pits. The lava came out before she could get away. Her feet immediately became critically damaged and she caught on fire, and ran out of the tunnel. She died in a workshop room due to blood loss. Her corpse burned away, leaving nothing but bones.

The Capture of Rigňth Nerstâkud
In autumn of 1052, a goblin Master Thief and a goblin Snatcher from Sorstâsost infiltrated the Fortress. The Master Thief was struck down, as the dwarves went back to their duties, the snatcher appeared and snatched Rigňth Nerstâkud. No dwarves were able to catch up, and the goblin escaped through the Stairway to the Magma Pool.

The First Skirmish
In spring of 1053, A party of five goblin Hammermen from Sorstâsost arrived in the middle of trade with an Elven Caravan from ěfomilefari. Three goblins died, two dwarves Died, and the elven caravan was wiped out. The goblins retreated.

The Battles of the Shredded Goblin
On the 16th of Hematite, 1053, 4 goblin Hammermen and 1 Goblin Macemen from Sorstâsost invaded, coinciding with the arrival of a human trade group from Pesor Takru. The Goblins were butchered with no Human or Dwarven loss of life. The last survivor from the spring's merchants from ěfomilefari became the only non-goblin casualty of the fight. All the goblins died, but a second wave came shortly afterward, consisting of four swordsmen and a bowmen. A fifth swordsman stood outside as a runner for the conflict. One bowman and the runner got away, a human swordsman was shot in the gut and Asën Gusgashoslan was shot through her lungs and slain. Other minor injuries were delivered, but the rest of the goblins were killed.

The Angry Diplomat Skirmish
On the 20th Limestone, goblins arrived to attack the caravan from Bëmbul âl. They at first were easily defeated, but a second wave of bowmen arrived on the 26th. They shot and killed the leader of the fortress, Kogan Měshosdeduk, and her child, Obok Astelstukos. After a brief, bloody struggle, one dwarven caravan guard died, a few injuries. All the goblins were slain. Reg Satuzlar gained a minor spinal injury from this battle.

The Butchery of Cog Nomalnokgol
Cog Nomalnokgol exited the fortress on the 22nd of Granite in 1056, after a skrimish with goblin bowmen. He walked right into approaching Goblin Macemen and decided to run away from the safe fortress. Rîsen attempted to save him, but being only one dwarf was unable to. Cog was killed by four goblins that ripped his still beating heart out and showed it to him as he faded away. The attackers lost three goblins, two got away, that is in addition to the two bowmen whom died in a skirmish one day earlier.

The Fall of Mĺmgoztilat
Rîsen lead 4 goblin bowmen and a goblin Guard to the bridge and fell dead. The goblins crossed the bridge, slaughtered a human caravan, and then slaughtered Reg, Rovod, and Deler before running away out of ammunition. The second wave comes shortly afterward and kills Stodir and Kadôl. In the end, only 2 goblins were killed. The fortress has officially fallen.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Levers in Adventure Mode
« on: February 17, 2008, 06:51:00 pm »
My Fortress has hit the spiraling out of control tantrum effect, so it's a goner here soon. The thing is, I have all these neat levers that do all different kinds of things. I have a "toilet trap" where you pull one lever to release the water, pull it to seal the area, and then pull another to evacuate the water to a future pump room. Do levers work in adventure mode? Did I build a wicked weapon for cleaning up my fortress quickly for adventurers, or is it only of value on my reclaim?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Oddities or how it is?
« on: February 16, 2008, 09:23:00 pm »
I am playing Adventure Mode for the first time, I started as a dwarf in a dwarven kingdom. The first town I went to was under attack by Trogldites. I attempted to locate the mayor, but was unable to. He died from having his throat ripped out. I found nothing in there, but I admit I didn't explore past the seventh level. Each of these levels are filled with rooms. From the best that I could see, these cities are approximatly 10 times the size of my fortresses, and I have huge areas of space that I am not even using. So, with the mayor dead I went on to the next city, because I saw somewhere that you get quests from mayors. This city was under attack by trogs too. Since the mayor isn't dead yet, I just went down 8 levels to find him, I have seen 3 dwarf peasants in this entire city. Is this an oddity, or is that how these cities really are?

So I get the message "You've spotted a Giant Cave Spider!"

These happen to be very common in the dwarven capital of my pocket world I am playing in. I had been seeing messages of guards and outpost liaisons dieing to them left and right. I was just moving on to another antman I saw. I figured I was dead meat, but I remembered hearing about throwing being overrated. I just happened to be carrying random parts of antmen I had run across and a few stones I picked up, so I figured "What the heck? Maybe I can knock it unconscious with a spinning antman body!" Unfortunatly the spinning antman body only managed to hit the third leg of the giant cave spider, and it glances away to boot. Well, after tossing all my bodyparts at it, and it almost upon me, I tossed a rock at it. The rock did the trick, and the Giant Cave Spider was struck down! Not really. Instead, it dodged the rock, right into the chasm that it spawned from. Still, I count it as my kill! And my drunk assistant still remains unkilled. Unfortunately it wasn't the one who brought down the outpost liaison, so my quest for his body continues! Until death by overwhelming antmen or a GCS that doesn't dodge rocks comes along! Oh, and that antman? He bounced off me, I counter-attacked, and blasted his corpse clean across the chasm. Adventure mode is fun!  :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / odthistmuved migrants!
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:49:00 pm »
So I finally went back to playing my no-migrants fortress, and I was so careful, editing the init.txt file every single time to put population back to 0 every time, closing out, and starting up, AND SOMEHOW I GOT INFECTED WITH NASTY POPULATION!

I've got a wave of 14 unneeded, unwelcome migrants. I had JUST reached a population of 18 on my own too, I had 2 marrages and a Romance. This fortress was going so well, but then somehow it didn't register that this fortress was a !0! population cap fortress! For over 10 years I didn't have a single migrant, and now when I work with another fortress, even being careful about my init.txt file, I get a wave of migrants!

The fortress is ruined. I wanted my "Homegrown fortress" darnit!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Evil Outpost Liaison
« on: March 17, 2008, 11:51:00 am »
My fortress for The Great Oceanic Construction has some severe problems when it comes to drink. So the Elven Caravan arrives, and at this moment the outpost liaison decides to have his "Meeting". The meeting ends, and the dwarf whose only duties consist of meeing outpost liasions and trading decides "Hum, I've been working too hard, I think I will take a break"

This guy hasn't done anything since Mid Autumn! Not a single thing, and decides the outpost Liaison was so much work he needed a 6 day break. So his break finally ends.

"Hum, I'm real tired, that break wore me out. I think I'll take a nap"

(Only Broker may trade)*SWITCH*(Anyone may trade)

Now those elves will demand an extra 100 monies worth of items for the booze I buy from them, instead of being able to shave it almost evenly. Bastards, that was an extra pig tail sock!
:(

I'd just seize the goods I want, but I want to get rid of some socks, so no harm done. Still, Evil Liaison and his spreading of evil ideas of "Breaks" and "Sleep"

Hello everyone. I have decided to issue the challenge of "The Great Oceanic Construction."

In the spirit of wonderful pirate ships and fanciful towers, I challenge everyone to take the Small world seed, and to create a magnificent construction in the middle of this ocean. We will all vote on the winner by this time next week, and the winner will be declared in two weeks. The fortress must be built in the same area for everyone. The zone to be worked in is 6x6, so there shouldn't be too many complaints in not having what is needed.(Except for the fact that a seacoast doesn't really have fresh water and often has aquifers.)
The year of the fortress at completion does not matter. Now without further ado(darn frencheese!  ;) ), the seed!

code:

Created in DF v0.27.176.38c.

[WORLD_GEN]
   [TITLE:SMALL]
   [SEED:2364996098]

And a picture of the site!
 ;)

Let's see what people come up with!

My Trade with the local goblins are thus-
Exports to me: Terror
Offerings from me: Vengeance

And to my local Kobolds-
Exports to me: Minor Annoyance
Offerings from me: Death
