DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Driving Dwarves Insane 101
« on: February 18, 2008, 07:14:00 pm »
I just saved my namesake from a fate as bad as death (I think I saved it, anyway)

I had a dwarf die from starvation and spent, I'm not kidding you, ONE HOUR trying to find it's body. I combed my fortress with a fine tooth comb, guess where I found it? In a cage I deconstructed for remodeling of my jails. I found two other dwarf corpses in cages, PLUS, my namesake, trapped in a cage. This dwarf witnessed the death AND decay of two others, and the recent death of the digger. This dwarf HAD to be at the borderline of insanity, because it's been a long time since I ordered that remodel done. Trapped in a cage with no way out, noone bringing food or water because it's a container instead of a cage. Horrid. Absolutly horrid. I will NEVER use cages again. It's Indwarane! Fortunatly, Kogan will live. After a good night's rest, the dwarf has calmed down from it's tantrum, and is now estatic because of the good living conditions that my fortress has been elevated to since the massive tantrums of earlier.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / For the Player who deserves Hammerstrikes
« on: March 05, 2008, 12:36:00 pm »
You know, I've noticed a decidedly lack of concern for the dwarves of the players in this community, and I have figured out two possible solutions.

The first is implementing a dwarven justice system here. Every time a dwarf dies, the player gets a hammerstrike. Now seeing as I really don't feel like getting hammerstrikes for when other people loose dwarves, I think we can rule that out  ;)

The other method is for you guys to try playing with no immigration. When each dwarf is precious, you will discover that you'll find a way to feed them new arrivals, rather then killing them for their silks. I've discovered I actually keep my dwarves with children tucked underground, and pay attention to relationships amongst dwarves when it actually influences the ability of my fortress to survive another winter.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Kitten From Nowhere
« on: March 01, 2008, 06:20:00 pm »
My female cat got knocked up from a Cat in a cage brought by dwarven traders.

Now I have a male kitten, and have to make a tough decision. Slaughter and prevent cat explosion, or let live and create a cat explosion. I decided to use it as an early warning system and let goblins take the decision from me.

Still though, the male cat was in a cage, I thought cages prevented these things!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Friendly Military Dwarves
« on: April 05, 2008, 03:03:00 pm »
Here is 2 pages of the announcements in my fortress.

(Page 3 is repeated 3 times with different names.)
My guards are Legendary Wrestlers (whom also are friends with the entire fortress)

These military dwarves have been elected mayor 3 times in a row, over the guy whose bedroom/office/dining room doubles as the meeting place for the fortress and he has no duties so is just sitting there 'making friends'

So these military dwarves/guards each have 3 or so pages of friends.

Pisses me off.

Oh well, 113 was too many population anyway. My guards are proceeding to beat the living crap out of any dwarf who tantrums too much, cutting that thread of insanity. I expect to have lost 20 when all is said and done, unless another military dwarf or guard is killed... I wish my guards wouldn't make so many damn friends! My guards actually stand around in the Meeting hall rather then patrolling. Lazy oafs!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Darn Saltwater Backwash!
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:19:00 am »
I don't know if it is diliberate or if it's just because of how it works, but I settled at the mouth of a nice-looking bay with a river running into it, thinking, "Great, A river will give me fresh water, and my dwarves will do fine!"

Welll, turns out that the entire river is salty  :(

Darn ocean is washing back into the river, just like real life, rendering it undrinkable I think. Alas, the only methoid I thought i knew of, pumping water counts as purification, turns out to be false, so now my cistern of salty water pumped from the salty river laughs as the dwarves have to pick between starving or dehydration.

Thank goodness for elves!

General Discussion / The CBS show Jericho
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:34:00 am »
I've got to know, I've heard some people never heard of this show. Appearently it did bad on the nelson ratings or whatever. So, Who here hasn't heard of this show, who likes it and why, and who doesn't like it and why.

That way, I can see with my own eyes the statement that "it was in a bad time slot blah blah blah" that people claim.

I like Jericho because I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction. The issues it raises with governmental abuses and actions I find very entertaining. I think the acting isn't bad (Not excellent, but not bad), the writing is good (there are a few small holes, but still relatively good.) and the show is generally engaging, keeping you guessing.

So, Any other comments?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dead Liaison/Adamantite Question
« on: March 02, 2008, 01:51:00 pm »
The dwarf liaison's return is what dictates immigration, right? If I find Adamantine and the dwarf liaison is dead, do I still need to prepare for the king's arrival, since the Liaison wouldn't update the immigration requirements with the notice of adamantine found?

DF Gameplay Questions / A Safe way to dig magma?
« on: February 26, 2008, 01:50:00 am »
Hello. I just did my first Magma forge setup, and lost my dwarf in the process. Her feet got hit by lava, setting her instantly on fire. This is really depressing since she was a legendary engraver. I "Carved Fortifications" out of the rock with this Superdwarvenly agile engraver, and she is now dead. Is there any way whatsoever to actually get lava to go through a stone without killing the dwarf who is doing it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Selling Weapons in Bins
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:34:00 pm »
I have many useless copper weapons from earlier times, but they are stored in Wood Cap Bins. My trader just arrived, and I wish to sell them all, but there are masterful steel weapons in one of the bins with copper junk. Is it possible to sell just the junk I don't want that is in the bins? This also applies to some of my foodstocks, and bags that are holding things I want when I don't want the bag.

(I am already creating a new stockpile and preventing anything but the good stuff in it for the armor and weapons, but that doesn't help me for this incident.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Salt Water Aquifer?
« on: February 21, 2008, 08:51:00 pm »
My new fortress recently ran out of beer, and I then discovered... NOT A SINGLE THING ON THE MAP IS A WATER SOURCE!

not the aquifer I'm pumping, not the murky pools all over the place, Nothing is drinkable. Can Aquifers even be salt water?

DF Gameplay Questions / Weapon Page Questions
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:43:00 pm »
Okay, I spent a bit looking for information on this, but have yet to find it.

On the weapon page you have the option of selecting the weapon, #1/#2, Armor, and Shied/Bucker/Nada

What the heck does the #1/#2 do, and why is it purple in Unarmed?

DF Gameplay Questions / Plump Helmet Trouble
« on: February 17, 2008, 05:53:00 pm »
I suspect all my Plump Helmet is being extracted to become spawn, loosing me my entire plump helmet crop. Is this what is going on? Or is it not enough farming space causing the problem? Did I starve my own population with lack of farms, or was it from processing plants?

DF Gameplay Questions / Retiring Fortresses
« on: March 26, 2008, 02:07:00 pm »
Adventurers can retire and be interacted with, I'd like to see fortresses be able to become cities on the world map too!

It is why I don't ever abandon fortresses and start new ones on the same map, because only rarely is a fortress a failure, most often it's successful, and I don't know if they can be retired if I meet such and such benchmark.

So, can fortresses be retired instead of abandoned? If not, is it in the works? I don't recall seeing anything about that in Reqs, Bloats, or Powergoals.

DF Bug Reports / Population cap in the init.txt file not working properly
« on: February 21, 2008, 06:42:00 pm »
The population cap in the init file doesn't appear to work correctly. If set to 0, another immigrant still comes in.

Edit: Elaberation

On ajusting the Init.txt file with df closed to set population cap to 0, starting df, starting a new fortress, running it, one new dwarf still shows up.
