DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Darn Saltwater Backwash!
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:08:00 am »
It was probably the natural floor on it. I'll be working on a better system eventually, if the fortress survives. The elvish supply of drink is gone, but fortunatly I had a rather large strawberry harvest, so I have my brewerys going again. Hopfully I will be able to get the whole thing running with some sense of efficiency here soon. My farmers are working non-stop planting and harvesting. I probably will need to allocate a few more to the task though, since it's only half the 10x10 field planted, so only 50 plants for a fortress of 50 food and drink. It is good for a single season, but it's not the increase I need to supply the next immigrant horde for another growing season. I'll pull it together, I just hope I don't loose too many dwarves in the process. Cistern M2 is about to begin, minus the natural sandy beach floor, and up one level higher. I might make it a permanent pump/waterfall combination. We'll see what I do when I pick it up tomorrow, when the major construction projects resume with a growing stockpile of food and drink, rather then shrinking.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Darn Saltwater Backwash!
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:19:00 am »
I don't know if it is diliberate or if it's just because of how it works, but I settled at the mouth of a nice-looking bay with a river running into it, thinking, "Great, A river will give me fresh water, and my dwarves will do fine!"

Welll, turns out that the entire river is salty  :(

Darn ocean is washing back into the river, just like real life, rendering it undrinkable I think. Alas, the only methoid I thought i knew of, pumping water counts as purification, turns out to be false, so now my cistern of salty water pumped from the salty river laughs as the dwarves have to pick between starving or dehydration.

Thank goodness for elves!

My fortress "Lolokgeshud Vanel" has lots of engravings of goblets and bones.

In adventure mode, I found out why. The goblet is the civilization symbol, and bones are the group symbol.

Yes, now the carp are trained in the ways of war. Now all they need to learn is butchery, and their evil plan is complete...

Dwarfy McMayor: "Oops! Sorry Baroness, I forgot to shut the floodgate door. What's that? You understand? Awfully nice of you, seeing as it resulted in your brutal death. Okay boys, you can hall this corpse away now!"

The engraver you set to carve fortifications next to the floodgate into your new farmland decides to drop a random article of clothing there as well, causing the floodgate not to close and putting the entire farmspace under 7/7 water with no way to fix it

Ants are quite amazing creatures, in my opinion they are only matched by humans in nature. They build HUGE cities of millions, setting up systems to support themselves in numbers larger then what should be possible to be supported in the area.

Know why I think we shouldn't pour cement down their holes?
BECAUSE ANTS SCARE THE BEJEBUS OUT OF ME!
I have been to several places in the world, know what I saw? Huge masses of ants. I've even encountered crazy mutant ants that jump and chase humans. I've seen complex road systems from ants, I've watched a colony kill a 50 year old tree IN SIX MONTHS!
Now think, what happens when you start showing the ants other tools? Here ants, see this? This is how you practice large-scale genocide on a pest.
Next thing you know, some super-mutant ant survives the insectocide and gets it into it's ant-head to do the same to us, and then we are screwed. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE MAN! You cannot escape the ants!
Our only advantage over them is our large size, but to compete, each human has to kill 1000 ants a day!
And they are so damn small, they are sure to slip by you and get you when you sleep...
So you see, if you teach an ant colony genocide, you DAMN WELL BETTER KILL THEM ALL SO NONE LEARN THE LESSON!
*Looks over his shoulder*
Oh my gosh, I think an ant is watching me... OH NO, IT'S COMING FOR ME! RUNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Levers
« on: March 25, 2008, 11:37:00 am »
I do mine with Mechanism Quality and type. I might have quite a few levers in my fortress. Pressing T I can find out what something is made of, and what kind of mechanisms are in it. I pair any mechanisms I have, making them the same stone and quality. This on top of color coding allows me quite a few options involved. When I reach the max a room can be diverse, I build another Lever room. Using the hotkey system, I can name each of my lever rooms.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What are your opinions on elven traders
« on: February 19, 2008, 05:38:00 pm »
DOH!

My Steel Piccalo that I got when the dwarven caravan lost it's goods in the riots of '53 was decorated with bone. I thought all my steel instruments were good. Now I will have to wait for another caravan to get the wood I desperately need to turn into charcoal so I can make my Dungeon Master a Legendary Armor Maker.

Stupid Elves. I wish there was a filter you could apply to filter out Animal-product used and bloody stuff. They are lucky my army was all standing down or I'd have just seized the wood. I think it's time to restructure the trade depot to handle those ear-pickers.

They sell wood? I usually didn't even bother trading with them because I thought they didn't. Now I gotta go through all my junk and find the non-bloodstained stuff so I can get some trade with elves going on.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Discuss my town layout
« on: March 25, 2008, 11:40:00 am »
one of my fortress actually turns the very cliffside into the external wall. This goes up and down for 12 Z levels. Yes, it's planned like yours, but it looks pretty darn good anyway.

Unfortunately only the first two Z levels are fully granite, since I didn't have enough granite dug out yet to turn it into a real "Granite Fortress of Visionaries"

(Edit: Just Reread it, you have a big problem...
This-
A small town with lots of rooms which can be used for workshops,
Followed by this-
on higher floors the higher class society will have their offices, special bedrooms and the likes.
= Annoyed upper class.
