DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Just lost my first fortress
« on: March 22, 2008, 11:55:00 am »
So everyone died but your mayor?

Loosing isn't that bad, each loss gives you knowledge you can use in your next fort. Sometimes it can be fun, as you battle goblins tooth and nail to defend your fortress to the last man, or it degenerates into chaos and disorder an spirals downward to one dwarf, who commits suicide.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Good Merchants!
« on: March 21, 2008, 11:11:00 pm »
In my no immigrants fortresses, I personally like buying a breeding pair of cougars. I don't let them be pets though. I let my population of cougars get huge, and consider them to be part of my fortress's defense. My cougars usually manage to kill a goblin by themselves if they aren't bowgoblins when fighting ambushers.

What always gets me giddy though is Platinum. I always buy Platinum. Platinum is such a nice material to build throne rooms, chairs, tables, and anything else that can be made of metal out of when it comes to opulent constructed places. My first fortress is slowly gaining Platinum floors to go with it's Platinum walls, and will get a Platinum throne when I have a skilled enough Blacksmith to make a masterpiece. PLATINUM!

I found that alot of the engravings that are made and make no sense in df mode make plenty of sense when you look at them in adventure mode. Like bones and chalices. One of my fortresses is carved with lots and lots of chalices and bones. Turns out that this fortress's symbol is bones, and civ's symbol is chalices.

What the heck is an independent?
It sounds like some kind of political affiliation.

It's neat that you can use this game for school credit though. It shows some teachers are thinking. Video games require use of thought, I have always thought so. About eleven months ago, my experience driving fake cars in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas actually saved my life for real on the road. You don't always encounter some of the strange situations in real life that you do in video games, but video games can prepare you in advance for those same strange situations. Especially if they have some significant elements of realism in them. For example, if earth is ever rushed by the Zerg, my experience at establishing good Vespine mining systems will come in handy for sure!

Well look at what the topic is, have you ever forgotten to eat because you grew Dwarf Food?  :)

The topic is, Weird eating habits. Why not discuss vegetarianism, Spam, Cannibalism, and other topics?

;)

SPH IS MY FOOD OF CHOICE!

Sph and eggs!
Yum.

Spam's a delicacy in Hawaii. It sells for inflated prices. It's crazy.
If there were a Spam version of Plump Helmets, it would have to be
SPH. Stems of Plump Helmets. I want some Sph. Sph sounds good.

Kagus, I can't stand soymilk, soyicecream, or Tofu. Just because you can't stand milk doesn't mean it's crap for the rest of us. Likewise, my wife, a full carnivore, only drinks soymilk because she thinks milk is too fattening.

Othob Rithol, To each their own. I hate people less then I am hated as a general rule, However, anyone who ever threatens me becomes fair game for the rest of their days, especially when I get a chance to rib at them. Are you DENYING my right to rib?!  ;)

benoit.hudson, I am from Colorado, not Wisconsin. Though I am attempting to get to play there one out of every four weekends, and perhaps for a bit in the summer. Strange coincidence eh?

gimli, ethical beliefs. Some people believe it is wrong to eat pork, some people say no beef on fridays, and some people say nothing at all. Everyone does what they think is right and to heck with everyone else, myself included. It is my right, given to me through the blood and sweat from those who came before, assured by my own blood and sweat now, and maintained by the blood and sweat of those who come after I am gone.

Pickerel, I've heard some people say it tastes like chicken. There was also an incident of some guy in Germany selling body parts to another to eat I think... My suggestion for maintaining a healthy diet is simple. Don't concentrate on health so much. Your body is a much more complex manufactory or chemical plant then dietitians truly understand. It seems like every 10 years they change what you 'should' eat to get proper nutrition, saying "this thing wasn't bad for you, we were wrong, eat lots of it but don't eat that..." It doesn't inspire a lot of faith in these people, especially since these are the same guys that told me "You cannot survive as a Vegetarian without taking this grocery list of vitamins" Strangely, I have been healthier throughout my life then my best friend, who had vitamins tossed down his throat by his mother for his entire life, plus what I have accomplished with my life shows my diet isn't lacking. The Secret? Who the hell cares what I eat philosophy of eating. Sure, a pro-body builder can outlift me with all his "protein shakes", though I outrun his out of shape foolish self.  ;)

Awayfarer, I've never met a vegetarian who gave it up for extended life. I imagine that myth has to be based on someone, so maybe one day...

Hyperturtle, I don't kiss and tell, but I can certainly tell you that Oral Sex has nothing to do with eating meat, despite the names occasionally tossed onto it.  ;)

I figure dwarves just have digestive processes that are more efficient at converting fungii.</STRONG>

You know, I find it fascinating what people assume when it comes to nutrition. As a Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian for all but some 6 or so years of my life, I've heard quite a bit of comments on my nutrition. Some people insist that I should be dead since I don't take a single vitamin or other supplement (besides the crap they put in food. I'm sure I'm a walking insecticide  ;)). These people tell me I'm weak, and that they could beat me up since I don't eat meat(Those comments usually end when they discover I spent 4 years in the US Marines lugging around a machine gun and they compare that to their gut gained from sitting behind their computer.)
It is really funny when you think about the threats you get from some people, especially online (Right jurassiced?)
Actually I should call myself a Lacto-Vegetarian, since I don't like eggs, though I am not opposed to the practice of eating eggs. I just don't like the taste  ;) Of course Vegetarian usually implies eating vegetables, but I really hate lettuce. So when you boil it down, I'm a carrot, Tomato, Cheese, mushroom, and fruit eating milk drinker.
I love mushrooms. I'd say they consist in some part or another of 30% of my diet. By far the largest part.

And to answer the original question, Not with plump helmets, but I did find myself building more wells when I was thirsty... But it was like 5 AM and I should have been in bed hours ago by then.

What if someone had the exact same question but was too afraid to ask it themselves and by some random fluke actually used the search function?

They'd be out of luck, that is what.

General Discussion / The CBS show Jericho
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:34:00 am »
I've got to know, I've heard some people never heard of this show. Appearently it did bad on the nelson ratings or whatever. So, Who here hasn't heard of this show, who likes it and why, and who doesn't like it and why.

That way, I can see with my own eyes the statement that "it was in a bad time slot blah blah blah" that people claim.

I like Jericho because I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction. The issues it raises with governmental abuses and actions I find very entertaining. I think the acting isn't bad (Not excellent, but not bad), the writing is good (there are a few small holes, but still relatively good.) and the show is generally engaging, keeping you guessing.

So, Any other comments?

Sounds like a good setup. My food is usually turtle, but booze a mix of them all. I also bring 5 plump helmets and forbid the turtle barrels for the first few days, giving me my plump helmet seeds.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Animals in cages breed?
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:11:00 pm »
Not only do they breed in a cage, but they breed if in separate cages as well, separated by your entire fortress and behind locked doors. This is with the most current version, v0.27.176.38c

My first artifact was a chalk ring banded with circles of chalk.

It was named "Kogan Loloklam" and gave me the perfect name for myself. I am named after the Artifact that is named after the Dwarf whom made it.

Boat Granitestone, if you are curious  ;)

Erm, you must be confusing Colossi with Titans. Bronze colossi are constructs, and therefore do not tire, feel pain or have any vulnerable internal organs. This makes them quite dangerous, and I therefore object that they are the worst of the megabeasts. I had a colossus rout two goblin squads where a Hydra was felled with only one or two casualties on the goblin side. If you replace Colossus with Titan, then your tactics are fully applicable. I do however agree with that bolts are ineffective against Colossi. It takes an Elite Marksdwarf equipped with very good equipment(steel crossbow and steel bolts, well-made) to do any non-trivial damage to a Colossus. At best you can take out an eye with sustained fire. It's best to use axes and hammers in this case, but even then you need some skilled fighters.</STRONG>

I didn't know they don't tire, I just know that Marksdwarves seem to do less then the same number of dwarves used barehanded on them.
