DF General Discussion / Re: DF gone mainstream: Good or Bad?
« on: April 17, 2008, 09:29:00 pm »
quote:
Bay 12 is dedicated to providing original games free of charge, but that doesn't mean it is free for us to make them. If you've enjoyed any of our games, and you are able to give, we accept donations.

There's your answer to DF selling out. If DF sells out, it's because Bay 12 sells out. If Bay 12 sells out, it's because Toady One got tired of living on scrap for money. I think I saw somewhere that he shoots for 2000$ a month? Can't be sure about that, 2000$ a month equals about 12$ an hour. Doing CAD(computer aided drafting) work at an entry level where I'm from starts at 15$ an hour. Someone with the programming skills that Toady One clearly has could probably find work on par with 18$ an hour or more. That's closer to 3000$ a month.
I don't know his situation, but if he is supporting more then himself he's a god when it comes to managing his money. I'm good at it and still can't support more then my wife and myself on a basic level at 2000$ a month. I don't see him getting 2000 a month though. That requires 40 people donating 50$ each month.

When you look at these bleak numbers, perhaps you can see why people sell out.
If someone came up to Toady One and said "In exchange for your company, I will ensure you can always support yourself and your family forever" do you think he shouldn't take it because it would "ruin your game!!!one!1!!"
No!

If Toady One gets a chance to sell out and he takes it, good on him! If he doesn't, as long as it was what he wanted, Good on him again! 1 Million dollars equals 40 years of meeting a donation quota of 2000$ a month. Toady One has done what he has done in what, three years? what could he do with forty? 1 Million dollars could launch Bay 13, with a dedicated team of programmers fulfilling his every wish. Maybe a bay 14 and 15 too! In fact, a whole continent of bays at his every beck and call. Every person has a price at which they will sell something they worked hard for. The price might contain such intangible things as an honorable reputation of the buyer, but the price exists regardless. You just have to trust those you admire to know to get the value out of what is offered, and I think anything short of total and permanent financial independence for Toady One and his brother would be too low, but that's my opinion, and not their reality.

Want to ensure that Dwarf Fortress never sells out? A constant state of high donations would do that for sure, because it removes the value from financial independence! Do you have extra cash you know you'll just blow on fast food? Cut out the fast food for the month and donate it to the guy who is making the game you like instead.

And Toady One will eventually call the game done. Don't count on it being forever in development. He has his power-goals and reqs, and with the core when they are all complete then the game is complete.

Here's Toady One on that issue:

quote:
Core elements form the skeleton of the game and are created as development reaches the corresponding Arcs. Reqs are smaller important elements that are needed for the game to be considered complete. Bloats are elements that are not necessary but which might be added nonetheless. A Power Goal is a scenario which we'd like to arise during play. Particular characters and locations within the description will not be added -- they are considered complete when the given scenario is possible in spirit.

HOW TO SPELL CORRECTLY

TYPE IN ALL CAPS

SUPPL3MENT SOM3 LETT3RS FOR NUMB3RS

BREAKZ OUT THE ZZ, TRUNC8 AS MUCH AS U CAN TO M8K ME H8 U!

Seriously, why begin a discussion on the proper usage of spelling and grammar with a complete disregard for standard procedures of capitalization.

That rather sounds like some kind of money scheme.

I don't know why any of you are actually paying me any attention. Go back under your rocks and leave me alone. Wait, that was my rock, and I was supposed to leave you alone... I'm so confused. Good thing nobody can understand what I am trying to say, since I don't spell correctly, or use good grammery, or anything of that nature, though at least my run-on sentences make judicious use of commas! That's my story and I'm sticking with it, or something of that nature.

Geeze, you guys need some fabric softener!

What, you're still here? You must want to hear my song...
Ohhh... yourrr... a...
Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul ,
Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul ,
Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul,
Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul Cabnul
for caring about me!

She is engraving an image of her engraving an image of her most hated creature. It's very imaginative.

Red Jackard, thank you very much. Now if Fishersalwaysdie does the same the first page will no longer need to be scrolled so that I can read the comics  :)

Request:
Red Jackard goes back to first page, presses "Edit Message" on his second message, turns image into a link rather then a thread-destroying image

Fishersalwaysdie goes back to his quote of Red Jackard, unquotes Red Jackard's image.

And Volla, the message is readable for those of us who don't appear to have as high resolutions as Red Jackard or Fishersalwaysdie

A joke is only good if it doesn't run on and it isn't lost on the audience. Make a comic too short and the references and information becomes too insider, and it gets lost. Make it too long, and *YAWN*

Red Jackard's thread-destroying comic wasn't as good as the original because the text explaining the jobs and expression of anger with the red eyes are tied together, eliminating the link between Cause (Dwarf is angry about the job skills of the new Migrants) and effect (angry dwarf kills useless migrants by water)

As it is, he can be seen by some as being already angry, as I saw it in Red Jackard's.

Of course I am not some fancy "comic critic." I usually disagree with any art critic. Music critics too. I've been told one of the spookiest songs I have ever heard is supposed to be upbeat and cheerful. I still find it creepy and unsettling any time I hear it. (Air on the G String. An adaptation of Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Air by August Wilhelmj)

It's not the critics that decide what I watch, read, or listen to though. It's only me.

Poor Potasher.

And what about fertilizer?!

Do like I do, make your own marketing campaign.

Don't push Toady One to worry about something else, advertise for him instead!

Yep, I do:
{ENTER} {UP} {ENTER}

>

h {UP} {LEFT} {LEFT} {ENTER} {DOWN} {DOWN} {DOWN} {RIGHT} {RIGHT} {RIGHT} {RIGHT} {ENTER} i {UP}

So the weirdness was because there wasn't enough of a pause to clean out the buffer, and when it reached the command of {pause}, it halted sending information to the keyboard buffer, but then resumed, causing some of the commands to get into the barely empty buffer, filling it up again, until the next pause where it cleared out more of the buffer allowing other commands to get in?

That would explain what happened  ;)

2410
So do you know what caused the weirdness this time?

2411
Thanks for the down 12, forgot to check the old Ini file, I was so busy testing the {Pause} to see if it worked   ;)

There is still something wonkey going on. Here's a 300ish line command, creating an entire "entry" for a fortress.

I PMed you the entire text of the action, so you can take a look at it yourself. I imagine if I work on better placement of the pause, it will work, but that doesn't identify the problem very well.

You will also see why I think multipliers would be good too.

{DOWN**12}
is so much easier then
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}
{DOWN}

;)

2413
Hey Zep, think you can make multipliers work for it, like **12 execute the same command 12 times?
Also, I have noticed it doesn't continue after about 100 lines. This greatly limits the absolute size of a structure that can be built in one go. Any way to fix this? (Obviously I can make it 4 or more different commands, which I am, but still! I want to be able to dig an entire automated fortress at the push of a button! 100 commands won't even hold my jail cells.)

2414
This is beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful.

I am recommending it in the Hydra game I just cooked up.

(Edit: How about DFcom for the acronym?)
