Currently, without real military weapons, our army gains less skill because soldiers die in battle.  Without practice weapons, ditto becuse soldiers die or get brain damage while sparring.  Without sparring partners, there is currently no skill improvement.

The ability to have soldiers automatically pick up the dullest sword when sparring, and automatically switch to the sharpest when on duty, would be *less* complicated than the current dance we have to do now.</STRONG>

Yup, this is the only fix sparring really needs.  Maybe sparring will get a big overhaul someday, but the real issue is the horrible unarmed-forbid-unforbid-rearm cycle that has to be done every time a melee squad goes on/off duty.

e: plus the ability to actually create proper training weapons, of course (who has that much silver around?)

I'm all for this.  In addition, soldiers should be smart enough to switch to the least powerful weapons available when sparring.  Naturally you would still run the risk of sparring injuries if you forgot to make any practice weapons.

Uh, the OP wasn't talking about cannibalism as far as I know.  He was just talking about eating other intelligent races.

I actually modded this in a few days ago, it's super easy.

Open /raw/objects/creature_standard.txt and remove [BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD] from the creature entries for anything you want to be able to eat.  You don't have to create a new world or anything, just load a game and your dwarves will start butchering available corpses.  *Elf meat roast* has been a staple among my dwarves for a while now.

If you look at engravings of demons in Adventure Mode they tend to discuss how the demon was imprisoned in adamantine.  I'm not sure it's a portal to hell per se.

I read the entire thing and agree with basically all of it.  The only thing that might be too far is the weapon skills in the military screen, mainly because I would like viewing skills to be easier for ALL dwarves, not just military.

Wood spear? Isn't that called a Javaline? In order to have something be a spear I think it needs a spearhead.

Elves should be able to make wooden weapons that don't have the usual damage reduction (see Threetoe's latest story).  But there's no reason why a dwarven woodcrafter couldn't hack out a pointy stick and call it a spear.

Also, no, spears don't need a separate head attached.  A javelin is a kind of throwing spear and it may or may not have a head.

I would really like this too, as an option or whatever.

I came into this thread pretty skeptical but that's actually a fantastic idea and makes so much sense.  I'd stared at a bunch of axles thinking "There really should be a way to lubricate this thing" but never quite made the leap.  Total support.

I agree, and I'd like to see this extended to the possessions of dwarves who die as well, to prevent the familiar scene of 20 peasants running out into a crowd of bowgoblins to retrieve a dead champion's socks.

Yeah, she must have been a total moron not to think that was hilarious.

The way it is now, you have to go digging around for a limited amount of metal, which prevents people from getting stuff too easily.

Edit: good stuff too easily. Its already easy to get stuff. Its just the good stuff thats hard to get.

I see your point, but there's plenty other factors that would keep it reasonably balanced even with a 100% rate of return.  Time is a resource too -- it takes time to melt stuff down and if you could have used that time more profitably, it's your loss.  And if you don't have magma, melting items as the primary means of obtaining metal necessitates a gigantic amount of charcoal.

A rate of return below 50% is just bizarre.  I would prefer something in the range of 75-95%.

It should.  It definitely bothers me.  That's part of the general problem with stacks though.
