General Discussion / Re: What are you reading?
« on: August 18, 2015, 01:01:36 pm »
Recently read a translation of "The three body problem" (三体) by Liu Cyxin(刘慈欣), a science fiction novel which is basically Contact in the Chinese Cultural Revolution era. Interesting characters and it's the first time I read a novelized account of life in 70's china. Very interesting stuff, I think the following novel will be translated fairly soon. Fair warning, it's not a novel where a lot happens, it's more of a slow burner, but it's the kind of novel that you keep thinking about a long time after you read it.

Release postponed to Aug.28th D:

Can't wait to start a small settlement with my mom, she likes this game a lot(at least right up to the point where we get looted/killed).

Yeah, I'll probably start a new game when he release. The reduced number of jump points sound like a good change, I like the idea of a more constrained expansion and fewer immediately close systems to your home worlds. Hopefully it will make it easier to have actually defended borders instead of pickets everywhere.

Just saw that metroid trailer, it's horrifying. Nintendo is dead to me now.

So, what's your predictions for Nintendo's Digital Event? I for one and hoping we get some sort of Metroid game by Retro  :P

A 3ds metroid would make me happy, I have no intention of acquiring a WiiU.

The division on the other hand was super cringy. Nobody talks like that in games...

I don't think consolidating the earth into a huge united nation thing would actually solve anything, it just magnifies the current issue with the big governments of the world. I'd go with breaking down the super powers to state sized mostly self governed independent countries. They would share a common constitution, but the actual laws could be very different. Emigration would be open and all would share once currency. The goal is to allow citizens to get out of a country they find no longer align with their own values and flock to the one that does.

There would be a need for a token peace keeping force, stronger than any single individual country, as we wouldn't want any single country to wage war on another or commit atrocities.

In a way it's similar to how the united state functions, but think world wide, with complete freedom of the individual states to make their own law as long as the constitution is respected.

Why not alien crossed with some human genes and unintended side-effect: sexy snake booty
That's a good explanation, since they outright said the new sectoids where spliced with human DNA. In that case they happened to splice lizardmens with human dna and got an effective hybrid that happens to have some female anatomy feature.

Procedural maps sound really good, the previous game got a bit stale after a while due to the repeating locales. Not quite sold on the "you need to pick stuff up" part, hopefully it's not quite as boring and repetitive as I imagine it to be.
