Tsukiko's kick pushed the targeted enemy back into its partner, which allowed Hiro to easily maim both of them. That only left one Enemy. Instead of attacking, the final Enemy on Bridge 1 turned and headed for the end of the bridge. Given how closely the Our Lady had been positioned to the human side of the mountain, it wouldn't have far to go before it escaped into the mountain wilds to cause chaos.

Kaji's attempt at grappling was so ill-advised that the enemy had no chance to prepare for it and he was able to easily toss it over the edge. Unfortunately, he found himself off balance in a bad position. The final Enemy rushed him and slashed at his side with its claws. His mecha was able to handle the attack, but so close to the edge himself, he would fall off if he took another hit.

Monika and Kirari

Impossibly fast, Marionette closed the gap to Monika. She stayed just outside the halberd's reach, which conveniently seemed beyond her own reach as well, but with how fast she was Monika still had to be wary. Monika was certainly faster, but the way Marionette moved gave her pause. The monster wasn't just fast, her body itself seemed to move more quickly. She couldn't outrun Monika, but she would certainly win out in the contest of reflexes that was close combat. And that was without considering her Flesh Knitters.

"Get out of here."

A solar projectile smashed into Marionette from the side, sending the monster sprawling. Verna was on her feet, panting heavily. The fist she'd used to punch her weapon was clenched tight enough to whiten the knuckles and she was shaking uncontrollably. Whether she felt fear or rage was unclear, but either way she was feeling a lot of it. And she was channeling all of it into facing down Marionette.

"Hurry up and go, Kirari. Run." Verna said firmly, "I'll kill her."

Marionette raised herself to her feet easily. She now had a large hole scorched in her shirt and her side had been burnt rather badly. Yet her face was still empty, as though she didn't even feel it. Verna's holy weapon returned to its orbit and she took up the best approximation of a ready stance she could muster after being knocked to the floor by an explosion. She might not have been in top form, but Monika had an ally.

Cay

Cay probably would have suggested Faith herself if L hadn't, but it was apparent that the condition wasn't just a matter of agreement. This was the final stretch of L's trust that Cay had to cross. Without hesitation she nodded. "That's acceptable." she said, meeting L's gaze. There was nothing untoward hidden in her eyes. There was a hint of self-doubt, but such always plagued Cay. She was far from a confident person. If anything was strange, it was how strong her recommendation had been.

Kirari

"After you got knocked out," Verna began, ignoring her own role in the matter, "she beat General Camilla in a fight. She and your other friend had the chance to run away. But after ordering the other one to run away, she surrendered herself. I don't think someone like that would ever hate you, at least not for very long."

Monika

The halberd felt everywhere and nowhere at once. Strangely, it felt most like it was above. Such a thing was impossible, of course, not even Neridus had cracked flight yet. It was probably just the proximity messing with her instinct. Whatever direction it was coming from, it had almost arrived.

"I'm still not sure it was the right decision." Doc said before she could stop herself. She sighed. "I guess I should explain. No more beating around the bush."

Monika could no longer sense her holy weapon. It was close enough to count as being in her presence again.

Unaware of Monika's weapon fast approaching, Doc continued, "I don't know how to tell you this gently. Kirari isn't just involved with Kira. Kira is Kirari."

An explosion rocked the outdoor cafe. Kirari, Verna, and several other bystanders were flung from their seats. Aside from a few scrapes and bruises, they would all be fine. Doc and Monika were much closer to the blast. Doc was flung several feet and a loud crunch indicated that something had definitely broken. The metal bird that had accompanied her dropped from the sky, indicating that she'd been knocked out. She wouldn't be getting up without medical attention.

Despite being just as close as Doc, Monika was fine. The explosion hadn't so much as singed her. A quick glance at the source confirmed the obvious reason why. Her halberd had embedded itself in the pavement, still glowing bright orange from the heat it had gathered reentering the atmosphere.

It wasn't entirely unheard of for holy weapons to up and fly to their meisters, but it was unheard of enough that Monika had never encountered the idea before. Holy weapons were mindless entities, they couldn't fly themselves. And despite many meisters trying, none had discovered the ability to actively summon their weapons. The few who had attempted to study the phenomenon unanimously believed some third party was involved in the act. Perhaps fate itself, as such movements only happened when danger loomed. In other words, it was as much a miracle to them as it was to Monika.

There was one other person who managed to be unaffected by the blast. A strange woman with blue hair and mismatched green and white eyes. Having just entered the cafe right as the halberd landed, she'd protected herself by stitching an emergency barrier out of her own skin. Wordlessly, her needles snatched up the nearest person and took their skin as a replacement. The victim screamed in pain and terror, but the woman seemed completely unfazed. Her head turned in a stilted, crooked movement to face Monika. Her face was utterly expressionless, devoid of any humanity. If there was somehow still any doubt as to her identity, that inhuman stare made it clear. Marionette, in the flesh.

The flesh of her now deceased victim.

Monika

Doc hesitated rather noticeably. "Yes, Kirari was the one behind the destruction of Nerest." she said finally. Monika could tell Doc was choosing her words carefully, presumably the reason as to why would come by the end of the conversation. "We used Verna's power in an attempt to recover Kira's memory. It was an extreme risk, but Kira insisted. She nearly died, but it worked. She remembers everything now. In return, Verna asked for a date, which is what they're up to right now."

The direction of Monika's halberd was getting fuzzier as it neared. With how fast it was traveling she wouldn't even be able to feel it at all soon.

Kirari

"Oh." Verna said, oddly subdued. She glanced over to Doc and Monika. She looked worried at first, but then she grinned. "I'm sure it's fine. She's your CO, right? Did Doc tell you what she did after I caught you?"

Yava

The princess smiled. "That's absolutely wonderful! I look forward to working with you."

~~~
Yava's first experience with her new employer could have been going better. For all Solamon's talk of trust, she sure was a conniving person. Being bait was easy enough. Going out for girls night was something else entirely. Yava was starting to get the distinct impression that Sola didn't have many friends. The disguised princess had originally fielded the plan as needing Yava specifically because she couldn't participate, but she'd suddenly changed plans at the last second and now the two of them were out on the town together.
It might not have been so bad if Sola had taken Yava to a nice spa or something, but she was insistent that they stick to "criminal" venues where they might encounter their targets. Of course, she wasn't lying when she said she didn't know what she was talking about and had yet to find a single establishment that Yava would have described as criminal. They were all just run-down and cheap. Cheaper than Yava would have wasted her time stealing from in most cases.
Eventually, Yava had at least managed to convince Sola that a restaurant was a good place to look, since that's how she'd originally swiped the necklace. Sola had even had the courtesy to pick a fast food place instead of trying to find a restuarant holed up in a back alley or something. Although the fact that she considered fast food criminal was a little worrying in itself. She'd given Yava free reign to order as much as she pleased, so at least the thief got a good meal.
The two of them were sitting in a booth with the necklace hanging conspicuously out of Yava's purse, one of several poor-quality items Sola had purchased for her. Sola was fairly talkative when she had something to say, but that was actually pretty rare. Most of the time she was quiet and reserved, almost sad. Evidently meals were a time when she didn't have much to say, and the silence was deafening.
Hiro's follow-up had no trouble further maiming the disabled mech and it dropped helplessly onto the bridge. Meanwhile, Tsukiko was able to successfully push back the Enemy that had attacked her leg with the corner of her shield, although the shield found itself slightly damaged by the impact with the Enemy's tougher armor. The two that had attacked the shield initially were just recovering. One tried to move forward and get behind Tsukiko's guard while she was distracted with the Enemy she'd just attacked. The other turned around and took a swipe at the Seraphiel's cockpit.
Thanks to Yuta's spotting, what little practice he'd gotten over the past month, and a lot of luck, Lee was able to hit one of the Enemy mecha headed for Kaji. The shell punched right through the Enemy's shoulder and smashed enough of its internal structure to disable it. A few moments later the strange eye-like gem mounted on the front went dark and the mecha fell over, lifeless.
Maddie and Tarmo
"It can be a bit overwhelming at first." Derreth said, "Just remember to not let the battle creep off the battlefield at big events like these. Seen too many people get hurt by starting shit outside the arena. Do that and I'm sure you'll have plenty of friends and rivals in no time. At the very least you have me." He pointed to his chest with his thumb and grinned broadly.
Much as another mortar shot would have been ideal, Kaji wasn't going to have the time to pull it off. The Enemy units were close enough that he'd probably just hit himself with his next round of friendly fire. He had a short time to think up a counterattack or flee before their shining red claws ripped into his mecha's armor.
Hiro's sword successfully chopped off the Enemy mecha's arms. The trailing flames also managed to do some damage to its frontal armor, though curiously the crystal "eye" seemed entirely untouched. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful in rescuing Tsukiko from having her power cable cut, as the cable happened to be close enough to be caught in his sword swing. The feedback didn't overload the core, but the Our Lady's shield was now locked in its extended form. This probably wouldn't pose a huge problem, as having the shield extended was still necessary to protect Tsukiko from the dogpile of Enemy mecha.
Although Yuta was able to generate enough speed to crack the clipped cable like a whip, it was readily apparent that it wouldn't serve as a functional weapon. The cable simply wasn't made for cutting through mecha armor, the best it would do was scratch some paint. Unless he had something really clever up his sleeve, Yuta was out of the fight.
The Zaquiel's second shot fell short of its target, allowing the fleeing mecha to escape. But that wasn't the worst of it. While inspecting the results of the fist bumps, Lee indeed discovered several small scratches in the mecha's paint.
The Enemy units on Bridge 1 successfully closed the distance and reached the Our Lady of Sorrows's position at the same time that Hiro arrived in the Seraphiel. The closest one slashed at the Our Lady, but its claws scraped harmlessly against the mecha's mighty shield. The next one encountered the same result, and the close proximity of their failed attacks put the two enemy mecha in a very vulnerable position. Unfortunately, Tsukiko was being swarmed by four foes, not two. The third moved to her left and clawed at her mecha's leg, although it failed to do any appreciable damage thanks to a poor angle. The fourth moved to the right and got one of its claws around the power cable that connected to the shield. It wasn't able to cut it right away, but would certainly do so if nothing was done about it.
Yuta got a stroke of luck to make up for his miss, the Enemy he had originally been aiming at grabbed the cable and was subsequently pulled towards the edge of the bridge by its retraction. However, it didn't take long for the other nearby Enemy units to take notice and also grab the cable. Their combined might resulted in Yuta being lifted into the air. It seemed he would be successfully grappling to the higher bridge after all.
Lee's shot smashed through its target's armor with surprising ease, punching straight into the power core. The core overloaded almost instantly and caused the Enemy mecha to explode violently. Two of its companions were caught by the explosion. When the dust cleared there were three hulking wrecks on the ground and the sole remaining Enemy on Bridge 2 was beating a hasty retreat back to the Enemy side of the bridge.
Kaji's inexperience (and perhaps his overconfidence as well) caused him to make a catastrophic mistake. The sun mortar's upward path crossed right through Yuta's grapple and incinerated a chunk of cable, which sent the St. Barbara plummeting back to Bridge 3. Luckily, his aim was still passable, and the glowing orb crashed to the ground in a spectacular explosion that obliterated two Enemy mecha, although three more still remained and were rapidly closing in on the Gobnait's Flock and St. Barbara.
Code: (Major damage to the St. Barbara's Rapid Deploy Winch Impactor) [Select]
Snapped Cable (1AP) - The cable has been cut in half and will need to be repaired before the attachment functions again
Suddenly free of their burden, the Enemy units on Bridge 1 resumed their charge towards the Our Lady of Sorrows.
"You are Saint Mecha X." Sensei Shirou finished his speech.
It was certainly an inspiring pep talk, but it was hardly enough for the newly christened Saint Mecha X. They all had some level of experience with mecha, but the mecha they knew were tools. Most of them hadn't even been inside the combat mecha Sensei had given them. Yuta and Lee had arrived a month prior, so they had some time to fit a bit of practice in, but Hiro had only made it to Sanctum Lighthouse mere hours before Sensei raised the alarm.
The Lighthouse's computers had detected an Enemy attack near Theophilus, one of the smaller villages towards the bottom of the mountain. It looked like it would be a small attack, but it was only the opening salvo. Now that the Enemy had begun its siege, they all knew the attacks would come regularly. Once a week, that's what Saint Mecha had to contend with. A relentless foe that tried their strength every week, growing stronger with each attempt.
That fight was now the duty of Saint Mecha X. A duty they had all signed up for, but one that none of them truly knew if they were prepared for.
Week 0 - Theophilus Battle
Layout
Enemy Types:
Basic Enemy
Wave 1
Detected Units: Basic Enemy x13
Detected Nodes: 1, 2, 3
A new type of enemy approached, but one very different from those of the past. While the Enemy of Saint Mecha had built strangely shaped mecha with specific purpose in mind, the Enemy of Saint Mecha X had opted to mimic the adaptability of human mecha. The incomprehensible gems that seemed to control Enemy mecha were mounted in the center of the body, giving them an eerie, cyclops-like eye.
The Enemy was approaching across three bridges, its new units charging forward in a faceless horde across the three bridges. Their bright red claws were outstretched to tear into any human mecha foolish enough to stand in their way. They were now halfway across the bridges, the invisible line in the sand that meant the time for battle had truly come. All that remained was for the vanguard of humanity to meet them in that battle.
Sensei Shirou was listening in from the Lighthouse, ready to offer advice or encouragement to his charges, but he couldn't offer them the ability to win. To find that, they would have to reach within. And they would have to do it quickly, before the Enemy made it across and began wreaking havoc on the innocent village beyond.
Eilyth
"Thanks a bunch." Leah said, "I know I went overboard, but this cake really means a lot to me. And it means a lot that you made sure it got here safely."
Eilyth's tagalong had managed to glue herself to Eilyth's mother in the wake of the cake incident. A fitting punishment for Carys's earlier attempt to flee.
"If you're up for it, there's one more thing you could do for me. I promise there's no more heavy lifting." Leah said. She had an unusually serious look on her face, whatever she wanted to ask wasn't going to be more silliness.
Monika
"Yes, that's one of the things we need to talk about." Doc said. Monika found Doc's expression impossible to read, even with the sunglasses removed, but something had definitely changed in it.
Doc waved the waiter over and ordered Monika a coffee, leaving Monika a few more moments with her thoughts. The wait might have been agonizing, were it not for a noticeable change in the tingling pull of her weapon. Normally such a change would be too gradual to really notice, but it was changing very rapidly. It was impossible to say for certain, but it felt like it was coming directly to her.
"But before we get to that, I want to check some background information. Are you familiar with the Tyranian Dame Kirari Arceneaux?" Doc interrupted Monika's thoughts.
Monika had, of course. The name Kirari Arceneaux engendered similar feelings in Katrians to the ones that Kellen the Hush did in Neridans. But unlike Monika's mother, Kirari was not a decorated hero. Her own people feared her just as much. She was an enigma, the details of her existence well-concealed by the Tyranian government out of fear or shame. A monster too terrifyingly real to use to scare children into good behavior, yet too unknown to truly acknowledge as part of reality. Monika knew she had dropped off the map a few years prior, much to everyone's relief. It was generally assumed that Tyran finally got fed up with her and quietly put her down, although there was no way to know for sure.
Kirari
Verna picked up on the shift in mood and cut herself off. "Are you okay?" she asked Kirari. Her brow was furrowed in worry, her unstable emotions for once working in Kirari's favor. "You want some of my cake? It's super yummy. I'm sure it will cheer you up right away." Without a second thought, she stabbed a chunk of chocolate cake off of her dessert and held it out for Kirari to eat.
Takosher, is my character valid now?
I'd like you to expand the personality more. Also while your attachment is technically fine, do be aware that ramming is just as dangerous to you as it is whatever you're attacking. Also, please join the Discord, as it will be necessary for communication during the preparation phases.
Name: Hiro Meijō
Personality: Perpetually dreamy and maybe not entirely all there, Hiro enjoys staring off into the middle distance while things happen around him, occasionally making comments that would baffle a stoner, but often oddly incisive ones. Even though he may not know what exactly is going on at any given time, he has a knack for doing the right thing for the circumstances anyway. He likes doing things that don't require too much thought, like sleeping, staring into fires, and abstract algebra.
Appearance: A pale, scruffy-looking young man with grey eyes, a narrow upturned nose, and long fluffy hair, most of it black. Sometimes, he has feathers plaited into his hair, which he doesn't seem to notice; nobody has actually seen him putting them in or taking them out. Out of uniform, he dresses like he is going to a funeral of someone he really hates. He has the thin build of someone who sometimes forgets to eat and sometimes forgets what eating is, and is of basically normal height.
Level 1 (0 EXP)
    Psychic: 1
Mecha Name: Seraphiel
Mecha Appearance: Seraphiel is Hiro's guardian angel, and designed to look the part. In general, the design favours elongated, tapering oval shapes where others might be boxier. Its legs taper into conical feet reminiscent of a shakōki-dogū, and its colour scheme is turquoise and white with gold edging. Because Hiro is afraid of heights, a pleasant grassy meadow has been painted on the inside of the cockpit window at around (pilot) knee level.
You can go for a slightly curvier design, but the tapered feet aren't gonna fly. In general I feel like you missed the part where mecha are inherently clunky, you're never really going to get an elegant design out of one.
Trait: Angelic Flight: As part of its generally angelic design, Seraphiel has a small rocket pack integrated into the upper back, designed to resemble feathered wings, allowing it to jump "hella high" like Wonderella, which is basically like flight. Although Seraphiel was not originally designed to mount interchangeable back modules, mounting points have begrudgingly been installed onto the wings to allow attachments to be mounted between them, but Hiro thinks it looks stupid and ruins the aesthetic to do so.
All mecha are designed to have interchangeable back modules, and this trait wouldn't exactly be a viable starter back module either. You shouldn't be designing to have a complete motif right out the gate, otherwise you won't have anything to build towards.
Power Source: Power Core
Infrastructure: Steel
Armor: Intractium
Equipped Attachments:
Name (Type): Dumah (Hand)
Description: A giant anime sword which billows with flame from an internal fuel reservoir when swung. The flame is just for effect.
This would be better if the flame were functional and powered by the mecha's core, rather than internally. There's not really any reason to do arbitrary aesthetic nonsense and a flaming sword is sufficiently simple to use as a starter weapon.
Damage:
[Any damage sustained should be noted here. Damage to specific attachments should instead be noted with those attachments]
Kirari
Verna's glower aside, the rest of the evening passed peacefully for Kirari. For the first time in quite a while she had an actual sense of peace. There was an uncomfortable foreboding hanging just above it, but it was far enough away to ignore. Eventually Verna got over whatever was bothering her and she struck up a conversation with Kirari, which inevitably turned towards finally planning their date...
Monika
The atmosphere was altogether far too peaceful. It had been around two weeks since Monika had been captured and she was finally being given a chance to see Kira. It should have been a peaceful event, but apparently she first had to meet with the grouchy doctor. That didn't bode well. Cilcinat had done her best to keep Monika informed, but that didn't mean much. Kira had apparently been rushed to the ER a few days ago, but Cilcinat hadn't been able to find out why. And with something as important as Kira's health on the line, it was more than a little awkward to be meeting the doctor at a quaint outdoor cafe.
Doc was sitting at a table underneath the cafe's awning. She had ditched her standard getup for a green sundress and a lightweight white half-jacket, as well as outfitting herself with a super cute pair of sunglasses which concealed what Monika was sure was a devastating glare of annoyance. She wasn't paying attention to the approach of Monika or the accompanying escort, but rather had her eye on a pair of young women sitting at a table further out in the sun. Monika followed her gaze and immediately recognized Kira's back. Sitting across from Kira was Verna, and for some reason the two seemed to be having a friendly conversation. It was easy to assume Verna was there for security, but Kira looked too relaxed around her for that to be the case. Something else was going on.
Kira was in casual clothes, which Monika assumed was to prevent drawing unwanted attention by dressing as a Katrian soldier. Monika had been asked to change into the t-shirt and skirt she was currently wearing for the same reason.
Doc glanced over, finally noticing Monika's arrival. Before speaking she waved off Monika's guard. They all looked at her like she was insane, which prompted Doc to lower her sunglasses and shoot them a glare. "I can handle myself, thank you. You're dismissed." she said.
Still uncertain, the men eventually relented and left, leaving Monika without any form of real guard for the first time since she was captured. It might have been tempting to try to make a break for it, were it not for the single bird suspiciously circling directly over Doc's location and the psychopath having a casual chat with Monika's friend a few meters away.
"Coffee?" Doc offered, waving Monika to the other seat at the table, "We've got a lot to talk about, so make yourself comfortable."
Kirari
Sightseeing with Verna had been an event. She was too hyperactive to actually see any of the sights, so Kirari still felt like she had no idea where she was. At the very least she got some general appreciation of the city. Serintain to a Katrian was a fortress of a city and major garrison for Neridan offenses, but seeing it from within revealed that it was also an exceptionally beautiful city. The Ashia River that served as such an overwhelming barrier against attack also split off into smaller waterways that crisscrossed throughout the city. A mix of Neridan technology and very cleanly culture managed to keep the water surprisingly clean as well. To compliment the natural wonder of the water were a multitude of beautifully architectured bridges, each unique but all sharing a familiar style. According to Doc, the bridges had largely been designed by two competing architects who constantly sought to one up each other. After competing for years, they eventually came to see one another as equals and fell in love. It was a corny story, but that added layer of saccharine romance seemed to suit Serintain. It was a strangely peaceful city and Kirari almost found it difficult to remember that it was a major military stronghold.
Once Verna had worn herself ragged dashing all over the city on foot, Doc had suggested the cafe they were currently sitting in. Verna had regained her energy at the mere whiff of coffee, and was currently regaling Kirari with the harrowing tale of One Time I Sold My Hand to a Con Artist. Evidently, the titular con artist nearly didn't get away with their own hand intact, although Verna had nothing to do with that, since she was trying to rescue Doc from a rabid squirrel at the time. Kirari suspected the story was heavily embellished, but knowing Verna it wouldn't have been a huge surprise to discover it was all true.
Yo at level 1 you have 1 skill point
Mind if I fill? The character concept can work well with Inventor, Researcher, or Mechanic and it seems like we'll need a balanced team to function well. I'll put down Inventor for now
That's absolutely fine, just wanted to make sure you knew ^^
Quote
There should not be any weaponry inherent in your base mecha unless it's your trait. This also seems large enough that it would potentially get in the way of larger backpacks. I might be misinterpreting and this is meant to be your attachment from down below, but in that case you should leave it out of the mecha description and exclusively note it in the attachment. Attachments are not part of the mecha, they're made to detach too.
Well I wasn't expecting a mecha to ever wear a backpack, it was meant to be the attachment mentioned later that would take up the Back slot. I guess we'll have to convert to fanny packs for efficiency's sake. I might end up making some variation as a Trait, I wasn't 100% on the one I chose.
Ah, sorry "backpack" is just another term for back attachment. This sort of weapon wouldn't really work as a trait, since it occupies a spot that would normally be occupied by a back attachment. Also, I rather like your current trait, it very much fills the specialization goal
Quote
"Your initial attachment should be extremely simple." While you can have this sort of attachment as a long (or possibly even short) term goal, it's too complicated for a starter attachment. given your trait, I am fine with a slightly more complex heavy weapon system than I might otherwise allow, but it needs to be a good deal simpler than this.
I had meant for it to be a fairly straightforward weapon. I guess you're looking for something more like "Its a gun/sword"?
Yes, the intent was more akin to that. The below thing would be fine for any mecha, although as stated you could get away with a little more. Something like a single barrel turret mounted between the shoulders would be fine to start, given your heavy weapons trait.
Name (Type): Purity Caseless-Rifle (Hand+Hand)
Description: A mecha-sized assault rifle with a boxy futuristic design. Rapidly fires small-caliber ammunition.
I'm a big fan of the shoulder of the shoulder turret aesthetic, would a nerfed version work as a Trait or should I just set getting a similar attachment as a goal?
That's definitely much more of a "aim to get this down the line" thing. At the start you're more or less intended to suck and have things that don't quite work for your end goal
