Any noble that has adamantine on their profile gets sacrificed to Vulcan. They're all agents of evil.

Shouldn't be. Usually when a mechanism is working, additional commands are ignored. Try linking a floodgate to a lever, and queueing two Pull commands. The gate will open, even though the lever says it should be closed. You'll need to pull the lever twice to get it shut again.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: First Trade, no Liason (POCKET)
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:31:00 pm »
Oddly, this just happened to me a few minutes ago. Every fort I've ever started sent a liason with the first caravan, but this one didn't.

Pocket, as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why do elves hate trading
« on: March 10, 2008, 12:36:00 pm »
It's worse than that, actually. You can buy a log from them, then try to sell it right back on the same trade screen and they'll get all huffy. I usually just ignore the elven merchants. It's not worth my broker's time to go tell them to piss off. Heck, it's not worth my peasants' time to haul a stack of elf bone bolts to the depot to piss them off with.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Barracks question
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:28:00 pm »
Actually the singular of "barracks" is "barrack". A single structure for military personnel is a barrack. You could have a row of barracks, and the area would usually be referred to as "the barracks" for clarity, but technically that one room you designate from a bed/weapon rack/armor rack is a single barrack.

My forts usually have two barracks, one from a rack and one wall-to-wall beds. The key is to make sure you have a spot in your flophouse for everyone in your fortress. Designate some of those migrants as carpenters to get the job done in a timely fashion. You don't need masterwork beds in your barrack(s).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma pumping tower
« on: March 07, 2008, 03:48:00 pm »
To get the easy answer out of the way: do you have sand? Glass is magma-safe.

Also, liquid is liquid. "Water" towers work just fine on magma.

Wait, you actually have a Soap Maker running around?

v -> p -> A

Problem solved.

I've heard stories of somebody who cooled his overclocked processor by putting it in his window with a box fan drawing the outside air into the room. The chips warmed the incoming Alaskan winter air to 25°C.
