First fort, I ignored the advice to not embark on an aquifer because I didn't think it would be a "big deal". LOL. I couldn't dig more than 2 layers deep. Every other room in my fort was a staircase because I was desperately looking for a spot where there wasn't an aquifer.

On that same fort, the fortress failed because I didn't think to designate seeds to be planted on farm plots... all my dwarfs starved to death.

I guess these are just "noob mistakes" and not true facepalm moments, but looking back on it with what I know now I do cringe a little  :)

DF Gameplay Questions / is this a bug? What do - gelder cancels handle stray cat: animal inaccessible

I gelded one of my cats, and the dwarf who gelded him keeps throwing cancellation announcements saying he can't access the cat. He appears to be stuck in the doorway while the cat is a few tiles away, on one of the farmer's workshop tiles.

I thought maybe this was a problem with pastures, so I un-pastured all my cats but he's still trying to handle the cat. It might also have to do with how I organized this workshop area - can "close-quarters" workshops cause this problem? I've been playing this fort for 5 (in-game) years and gelded most of my cats and it's never happened before, but it might have to do with the route this particular dwarf took.

edit: I checked the combat logs for unrelated reasons and it appears the cat and the gelder got into a brief fight?

All it says is:
The stray cat attacks the gelder but He jumps away!
The gelder stands up.

Pretty strange. Sounds like when my cat swats at my ankles when she's hungry... only I'm not trying to chop her balls off and I'm not currently stuck in a doorway.

DF Modding / Creature class renaming question

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question  :)

I am new to df and I've been having a lot of fun with it, and I'm also new to modding, which I've also been having a lot of fun with. I've been making very simple mods by editing the raws, of relevance I have made it so male horses are called stallions while females are called mares, and so on for a couple other animals.
My question is, would it be at all possible to change the class name of an animal based on whether or not it's gelded? I changed the names of horses to reflect real life, but also in real life gelded male horses are called "geldings", gelded bulls are called "steer", and so no, so it would be neat to see that reflected in-game as well.
