DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stupid marksdwarves (again)

Do you have bolts assigned to training and combat?

Dear Urists,

Why did I have to discover you the week before Finals.  Now my life is a wreck and I don't know if I can muster the willpower to study instead of spend time with you.  My girlfriend has been tantruming, and I keep getting secretive moods based around crafting a new fort.  Get out of my head, and go play in the magma with the goblins.  Wait a second.....

Signed, Omeganaut cancels Post Reply, taken by secretive mood.

Hahaha, awesome!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Saved By Stupidity
« on: December 10, 2012, 09:54:53 am »
Sometimes stupidity kills your fortress, in fact, most times stupidity kills your fortress... But there are occasional times when it saves you by the skin of your teeth!

So, I had a newly dug moat, with an elaborate filling and draining system, linked to the river, powering the grindstones, and ending in the great hall waterfall.

It was almost complete, all flood gates in, waterwheels in place, cistern carved out and ready, overflow pipe installed...

And then siege!

I think to myself- excellent, the perfect test of my new moat!

Just as the gobbos get near I pull the lever for the floodgates to flood it......

Aaaaaaaand I hadn't linked the floodgates to the levers...
What's worse, the drain leading to the great hall wasn't completely finished yet, and with the moat empty there was no water to block their progress, and this left them a route right into the heart of my fortress :O

The gobbos pile into the moat heading for the drain, I'm thinking, even if I squad all my dwarfs I'll never stop this....

Aaaaaaaand a squad of cave dragons start merrily bashing holes in the floodgates, flooding the moat and drowning themselves and the entire goblin army, HURRAH!

Post your stories!

Had two squads of ten fully steel armed dwarfs

Decided that I needed another squad, designated the same armour type, of course I didn't have enough steel greaves or boots made for the extra squad

Since they were told to replace clothing they promptly removed their existing trousers and shoes

Ended up with ten tantruming marksdwarfs armed with steel crossbows, helms and breastplates but naked from the waist down

Press 't' and hover over your kitchen- this will tell you the contents of the workshop

Check if the rotting item is an ingredient or finished meal.

Make sure you have a stockpile with space that takes the rotting item (if you have different food stockpiles for different types of ingredients).

Also- make sure you have enough barrels/pots to store food to stop it rotting.

I don't get why you would have to save space, do you all embark on 1x1 tiles with aquifers 4 z levels down or something?

You can always just seal yourself in and wait for the siege to leave, the will always leave eventually if they cant get in

iron armoured marksdwarfs behind fortifications should be really tough to beat though...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ammo
« on: December 06, 2012, 07:41:43 am »
Go to a marksdwarf and actually look inside the quiver he's carrying (if he's not carrying a quiver than that's the problem)

Also note here if the is carrying a weapon that can use the ammo he's carrying (crossbows = bolts)

Then go to the military screen and hit 'f' check that the squad is allowed to use the ammo type for combat that the dwarf is carrying, make sure you've set the ammo here to at least 100 bolts per dwarf in the squad- so a 10 man squad should have 1000

I always place the workshops in 5x5, space is never an issue in DF!!!! Storerooms go one z-level down

I would avoid putting staircases in the room, and always place a door- you never know when your going to need to lock someone in there ;-)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Champion

According to the wiki the Champion leads the teaching aspect of the training, so if you pick a dwarf with high teaching skill and high combat skills then he should teach the others faster

Sorry about the dumb question, but is it worth having the water wheels power your millstones? Querns do the same job, and I believe the speed difference is negligible, especially since dwarves aren't in short supply, unless you decide to strictly regulate their immigration and reproduction.

Dwarfs get tired when using millstones.

Plus its more dwarfy to construct a massive elaborate wheel and axle system :)

Well, I find that the quickest thing is always mining.

It will always be faster than constructing walls, or building doors or bridges.

Burrow your dwarfs into one section of your fort and use channels, or remove stairways and ramps to seal the enemy out.

If your fortress is really small and this wont be possible find a remote pocket or hill in the landscape and remove all of the ramps except one, burrow the dwarfs in the middle and when the beast approaches remove the last ramp.

Once sealed in you have the option of building crossbows and fortifications to defeat the foe without risking your men or building a trap corridor or if your completely screwed try to kill it with a cave-in

Dear Elf Liaison,

You are correct, after chopping it down and turning it into bolts it is now just a rude bauble, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it is 'fit only for your kind'. I can 'fit' quite a few of them into your elves.

Come get them back.

Yours,

The Overseer

Dear Urist McTrader,

Yesterday I noticed that your child was missing, but I was eating so I just hit spacebar.
Then I noticed that you had fallen and broken your leg, but I was a little bit thirsty so on my way to the fridge I just hit spacebar.
Then there was a goblin siege but I was a little tired and fancied a nap so I just hit spacebar...

NOT MUCH FUN WHEN YOUR ON THE RECEIVING END IS IT?

Yours faithfully,

The Overseer
