Range is denoted as a sphere around the marksdwarf, so the higher you go the shorter the range actually is.

Fortifications make no difference to firing or receiving fire- they simply block melee attacks.

You can improve the marksdwarfs chances of surviving bow attacks by giving them shields and letting them wrestle for a while.

But I still have a wild purring maggot in a constructed cage but any tame jobs get  cancelled   :mad:

I also tried training the lil bugger but the dungeonmaster says I have no trainable small animals

Hmmmmm, from what I gather you can only milk animals that can be picked up- and only the puring maggot can be lifted AND milked...

I see some posts about purring maggots being dropped on the floor after being milked and having to be re-caged so it must be possible somehow- anyone?

Ok, I have a wild purring maggot in a cage that is built in a room beside a farmers workshop.

When I add a milking job it gets canceled immediately.

I have no milk in stock at all so the maggot hasn't already been milked this season.

I've searched the forum and the wiki to try and figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Any ideas? Do I have to actually release the maggot into the workshop room?

Its possible to have a map that has very little ore in it, my last one had only small clumps of hematite...

In the end I ran reveal.exe rather than strip mine the whole map.

There's a fairly easy way to avoid this- if you build glass ceilings in the first 5 or 6 squares of your entrance tunnel the dwarfs count this as outside and turn back before they reach the front door, its really useful if you want to be able to lock the doors at a moments notice.


It can actually be a pain in the ass to have glass ceilings elsewhere- my main dining room/drinking wells room has a glass ceiling and it means when I issue a stay indoors order the dwarfs cant make it to the well.
Another pain in the ass is in winter when the water in the wells freezes through a glass ceiling and four z-levels down into the mountain!

Brainwave- I wonder if I can build a drawbridge over it to act like a storm shutter???

I cant find a source of coal anywhere- I've dug down five levels and dug out massive 'H' shapes on each one but still no sign.

I also cant find any magma...

How deep do you normally have to dig before you find this stuff?

You dont have to actually build a drawbridge over a gap- you can build it on flat ground. Since its indestructible when raised its effectively a gate...

Actually my vermin have not teleported at all, I dug a pit with three cave spiders in cages in it. The doors were locked and the cages opened by an external lever.

In less than a year the cave spiders had filled every single square of the pit and moreover had managed to scale the walls and fill the chamber above it as well.

Once I unlocked the doors for harvesting the cave spiders did disappear though.


I would suggest hollowing out a big cavern, sticking the spiders in it and just lock them in for a while- its not hard to catch new ones to replace them come harvest time anyway, just don't forget that the little buggers can climb walls!
