NW_Kohaku has the right idea.  Traps!
Make deep pits and have bridges over them set to pressure plates right behind them so the first goblin dooms those behind him to plummet down the deep pit you dig and place spikes at the bottom.
Training archers is a lot of effort right now and their combat deployment is so specific its almost better to think of them as wizards, my advice for you is make traps, make lots of picks and do insane amounts of mining to train your pickdorfs to master level.  Skillfully wielded picks are devastating against humanish size targets.

Traps traps traps

Quantity over quality, make the weapon trap with 10 crummy weapons in it, use all weapons that aren't high quality as traps and keep only the best weapons for your soldiers.  Cage traps and boulder traps always work so use your lower quality mechanisms there, save your highest quality mechanisms for weapons traps because they help the weapons hit!

And if you want to get REAL crazy try to make a minecart track with powered rollers to send minecarts launching down the corridors at invaders or loop them in endless loops to batter and crush any invader! Just be careful to have a couple ways of turning the powered rollers off so you don't end up killing your own men.

From the picture it looks like a list of the last 33ish thoughts ordered chronologically, do dwarves ever have that many thoughts at once?

I hate being that guy, but have you considered selecting one of your craftsdorfs and type 'gui/create-item' into DFhack.
Then create the one or two divine metal objects you want to work with to get you started. Much less of a headache, especially if you leave it alone after you make the things you want.

My recommendation is digging in diagonal checkers, you will 'discover' more damp tiles with each tile mined thus have less announcements.  I usually do this pattern with up/down stairs when digging out a shower leaving the last layer an up/down stair over empty air so it can fall for a Z level or two before hitting the grated 'shower' room floor.

@PatrikLundell

No risk if you do it right after they turn back.  You would a full month before they shifted again.

What about children? Wont all your children die of thirst without a source of water to drink?

Excuse me, I thought you said the designated area wasn't showing anything.
Like Loam said if its blue instead of beige your dorfs think you're still indecisive about your designations and wont act on them.

I bet you hid 'd' on a surface level and the default option came up 'Cut Trees' instead of 'Mine'.  So you just designated an underground area for lumber, but there are no trees so nothing got designated and your dorfs are blissfully ignorant of your desires.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: miners as military?
« on: May 29, 2020, 09:33:31 am »
There are some bugs with professional uniforms clashing with military uniforms.  I've gotten my woodcutting axemen to behave properly if you have lots of axes for them to choose from and you activate/deactivate them a few times they seem to figure it out alright, I bet the same tricks will work for pickmen (Which will probably show up as wrestlers on your military screen?).

Your miners won't mine while they are activated as military.  And as far as I can tell picks are amazing weapons VS armored targets/human sized enemies, but against larger enemies they start to underperform.  Goblins sometimes have gold picks, which are peak pick material once you pry them from their cold, dead hands.

I think anything climbing will climb diagonally.  My source is messing around in adventure mode.

You have a lot of spoilers that might pollute curious young minds and spoil what would otherwise be one of the most shocking gut watering moments of the game I.E. The circus coming to town if you eat too much candy.

All metal bolts (Except candy) perform almost identically in all the tests I've read about.  So make them out of whatever metal you have the most of :)

Making them out of iron is a bit of a waste of iron and steel bolts are actually slightly worse because it's lighter and so much more labor intensive.

Dear Urist McClothier,
I appreciate you were in a strange mood, but why couldn't you compromise with me, or even just communicate your needs clearly? You draw pictures of skeletons I get you piles of bones, you sketch pages of blocks so I have half a dozen stone blocks and a hand crafted platinum block right beside you... You make images of stacked fabrics I have stacks upon stack of all three types of cloth sitting there gathering dust.

Why was I not good enough? What was I not giving you that you needed? Why would you get in a strange mood over a skill you barely even know!?  :'( :'( :'(

RIP Urist
