SO apparently I've been out of the loop for a while. How do I make a tower cap farm? And when you say 120 tiles by 120 tiles, isn't that large enough to take up the whole map?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Caves

Hi!

I've read about the big cave system thingy, but I don't actually know if caves have already been inplemented, and if so, how to find them. Can someone enlighten me?

How does one go about finding a major river? All I ever look for is the river in the local map, then embark -- where does it say what kind? Can one push for more major rivers in the parameters somehow?

I'm not about to read through 98 pages of replies so I don't know if this has been posted or not, but I find if I switch back and forth from other programs (like notepad or firefox) and DF a lot, eventually DF becomes unresponsive, and I have to ctrl-alt-del and cancel to get DF to respond again.

Can someone introduce me to modding in new races? I read a lot of posts about orcs and hobgoblins and such but I know they're not part of the game by default.

I hear there is a program to manage my dwarves skills and professions. Is this true? Right now I'm using a huge text document to manage the dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Get my wood cutter to cut wood
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:41:03 pm »
Hi.

I can't get any wood cut. I have a free healthy dwarf with wood cutting enabled, and Fight with Axe on his  soldiering screen. But I only have two axes, and both of those are in bed with injured trappers and woodworkers. I have the feeling that's why I designate trees that just don't get chopped. How do I get the sickly dwarves to let go of their now useless weapons?

Yes. Slaughter enough of them to keep you alive till you can trade some for more useful tools.

Or burn them in lava. I'm not picky.

Hey guys

I can set up a hole in the wall and support my first seven dwarves through their first year. But I'm so OCD that without a complete plan in my head before hand I don't know what to do to move to a larger fortress. How does the old one fit within the new one? How do I layout the piles/shops/etc.? I need some serious help.

What are your guys' strategies for expanding?

DF General Discussion / Re: Increase Window Size
« on: May 14, 2009, 01:22:46 am »
Thanks. Though I either asked the wrong question or I'm still missing something: it doesn't let me see more tiles at once, just makes the ones I do see larger, so my field of view isn't any larger. Can I do that?

I tried this:

[WINDOWED:YES]

This is the size and font for windowed mode.  Changing to 800x600 and the

800x600 font might make you happier.

[WINDOWEDX:800]
[WINDOWEDY:600]
[FONT:curses_800x600.bmp]

Sorry for being noobish, but I tried fiddling with the init file and couldn't make it work. Can I make my DF window wider and taller?
