DF Suggestions / Re: Variable [FUEL] tag
« on: November 16, 2008, 12:29:42 am »
I'd say it depends on your definition of alloying; if you are referring to the mixing of 2 or more metals together, you won't get a reaction, as the valence shell electrons will be delocalised (i.e; not bound to one atom, can be thought of as a 'sea' of electrons surrounding the metal atoms) in either case. However, if you include semi-metallics in your definition, which are sufficiently electronegative as to prevent the delocalisation, you will get reactions between the constituents (metal carbides and silicides being the best known examples).

Ignore me, I just want this to turn up in my 'new replies' list.

Great thread, btw.

With the singer tag, maybe put in an additonal variable, that goes from 0-2, where 0 is the aforementioned attractive effect, 2 is a repulsive one (banshee scream that makes everyone flee perhaps?) and 1 is a neutral effect, all with the relevant mood effects.

DF Suggestions / Re: No more invincible forts
« on: November 13, 2008, 09:34:03 pm »
I agree with a sentiment expressed earlier in the thread; If you can surround your entire fortress in a lava cube, you deserve to be invincible.

By all means have tunnellers, sure, and maybe even aquatic units (frogmen ;)), but some sort of rock and magma drilling nightmare siege creature is ridiculous kinds of overpowered. If such a thing did occur, how the hell would the gobbo's catch it, let alone control it and direct it to dig in the right spot? As a megabeast, maybe, but not a gobbo pet.

Demons however, that could be fun.

Back compatibility won't be an issue if he manages to squeeze it in before the next update, as it will break compat anyway. Also, just out of curiosity, what were you making that required two units of fuel?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: your best soldier ever.
« on: November 11, 2008, 05:41:40 am »
It wasn't so much one awesome soldier, as three. I had one fort where, in the first immigrant wave I got three peasants, that promptly got assigned as wrestlers. They endured waves of untrained recruits, shoddy armour, and a non-stop training regime to emerge as legendary with sword, shield, hammer, armor and wrestling. At which stage I equipped them with masterful steel plate, shields and swords  ;D

I used them as siege breakers. I'd drop the fortress gates, the 3 would charge out, annihilating the armed squads out front before being sent to seperate corners of the map to slaughter whole squads of fleeing gobbos individually.

Already in, albeit without it specifically being a gem.

From the first page,
Quote
Living Rock: (I) A true endolith, perhaps a "breed" of rock exists that repopulates itself using a system similar to Conway's Life algorithm. Providing an endless amount of stone, it could be a rather large nuisance: blocking tunnels, filling rooms, and potentially encasing sleeping dwarves.

more underground diversity
-- up on dev_next in part, though there are some issues with some of the desired ones, especially with digging down, since it can't load all that many layers, and solutions for slowing downward digging all seem sort of gamey or sketchy

Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if it were possible, but I don't think Toady knows how.

Does it mean that making room for better graphics is just as bad as "palin' around" with the pro-graphics terrorists that hate America's youth?

The spinning *bad pun* strikes the forum in the thread. The thread explodes in gore. The forum has been struck down.

On topic;

Like I said earlier, I'm happy with ASCII. Hence I derive no real value from the graphics updates, and would much rather the time is spent on the current arc.  If Toady can seperate the various characters used in different applications easily and quickly, go for it. However, I have a strange feeling that this is going to be a long and painful task.

Hence, I look it as this; we take a significant chunk of time off developing something that is going to be enjoyed by all (seriously, army arc + adventurer skills? I might just get me a credit card so I can actually donate), to spend it instead on something that is going to be enjoyed by maybe half the population? I'd rather not.

Toady will get around to it eventually. However, let it happen when it happens, don't try and rush it in (and probably introduce a whole swath of new bugs in the process).

I understand this will probably be at odds with several people, but meh, it's how I feel about the subject.

Isn't that how it usually is? In fact, most quantum and theoretical physicists I know are built like 3rd graders.

Heh, that's actually the opposite of my uni. I swear, half the physics faculty here are fitness freaks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortifications not always filtering?
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:07:26 am »
Honestly, I prefer KoE's idea. Think about it, if the flow that pushed the imp into the grate lasts for more than one tick, the imp can get pushed through multiple tiles.
KoE's increases the time taken to traverse the filter, hence increasing the likelihood the current will end, and the imp will be trapped.

Further, KoE's idea allows for safer extraction of the captured imps for fire turrets.

Puppies: nature's stress reliever.

Mmm nothing like a good game of puppy football. I also highly reccomend puppy lacrosse, puppy tennis and puppy Space Program.
