Odds of this occurring within the next 1000 years: zilch.  Primary reason: Physics; that stupid speed of light problem.

To be fair, we can theoretically get to the nearest star system in a bit over a century using 1970's tech; Freeman Dyson calculated project Orion could reach Alpha Centauri in as little as 133 years (that's using the momentum limited estimation which assumes we want a *smooth* constant 1g acceleration; tweak those and we can go faster). Develop cryotech or hell, build a generation ship, and that's downright doable.

A disturbing thought came to mind regarding how our infrastructure is crumbling, and an oil pipeline is still being worked on that crosses our country. What puzzles me is, although it's on land, have they not learned from the BP oil disaster? Let's not forget, we have a water table/aquifer under where it crosses. Repeat BP, and bust a valve or few "by accident" and that's a rather effective way of taking care of citizens you're having a hard time with, and use plausible deniability of it being an accident, bad engineering, or whatever. No matter what, the damage is done, and an environment as well as an entire water supply would be screwed.

Not sure if serious...   ???

1) It's a lot less prone to spreading on land than it is in water, and damage would be limited to the immediate neighbourhood of any break.

2) The major difficulty with the BP rig was that they couldn't access the well head to shut off the flow. On land, not only can you literally walk up to the site of any breach, the pipe in either direction can be instantly sealed off with the turn of a valve/push of a button. Hell, throw in some sensors, and you could even have the system shut itself off if there is any sudden loss of pressure.

3) RE; using it as a means of oppression... do you know how much oil is worth? It would be cheaper to buy the entire town off/hire individual assassins/genetically modify winged monkeys to carry them off, than it would be to waste that much oil :P

I'm not a fan of politics in general, so naturally I wasn't aware. But this guy is all kinds of awesome for giving our government a Reason You Suck Speech and What The Hell Hero at them. All the more awesome this guy is an Independent as well. Why don't we have one as our president yet? Why are they always "wasted votes"?
I hate to burst your bubble but he votes Democratic 98% of the time.

Nothing wrong with that. I assume it's similar in the US, but here in Aus we have political parties big on solidarity; parties often force individual members to vote the party line rather than their personal or electorate's preferences. Having someone who is an independant that shares their views is a good thing; they can support each other on important issues, but at the same time allow votes of conscience which would be otherwise be suppressed by mainline party policy.

No wiesz, tak nasz wspaniały nadmorski kraj po internecie poniżać? :P

But well, he speaks the truth. Poland is a dumphole full of unemployment and crazy catholic/political fanatics. You don't want to move here unless you have both secured job and lot's of money before you even get here.

Whelp... my Dad fell in love with a Polish woman while he was visiting there last year, and now wants to get married and possibly move there. He should be able to get a job before he lands courtesy of a family friend, but still.

Swedish summers is too hot for me. I would go further north, but the damn mosquitos. The damn mosquitos man. Also the saunas.

I also think Osmosis' taste for cold beer might go down a bit in the winter as well, though. Might find himself more drawn to the variety of heated wine, like we natives do ;)

Well, mulled wine is delicious, and last night we fought off some cold weather with a hot buttered rum/spices cocktail (seriously, if you're ever in Melb, go to Madame Brussels), but a cool beer is still tasty next a raging fire :P

The outdoors being a refrigerator isn't that great. Remember, actually have to go outside to retrieve your now-frozen drink, and that requires leaving your incredibly-expensive-to-heat dwelling.

Air-conditioning ain't cheap either, and that's what jumpers are for. If I go outside in the level of clothing required to feel comfortable in the heat here, I'd get arrested for public indecency :/

My wife has some considerable time around Scandinavia and is real-world enamored of it, not just Internet-enamored. Too cold for my tastes. She insists Finland isn't *that* cold, even as she reminisces over photos of her coming out of the sauna and rolling naked in the snow.  :o

You see, that sounds awesome to me. I've seen snow once in my life, and have lived through summers where the tar regularly melted out of the roads; someplace cool sounds like bliss. Plus, you can chill your beer by leaving it outside for a few hours! Talk about convenience!

(Note; that beach is really skuzzy up close. It's filthy, the water smells bad, and there are no waves, because it's all part of an inlet rather than open ocean. As compensation though, have this!)

Because 95% of the country is spider and snake infested desert. We all live on the coast.

Neat factoid: The typical acronym for the LGBT community in Australia seems to be LGBTI. They include intersex by default.

Really? Honestly, in my experience LGBT is common, but I have never once heard LGBTI.

That's a universal law of nature. Nature abhors a vacuum, and therefore whenever she sees an empty space she endeavours to fill it with meth labs.

Congratulations. You just made me laugh out loud. I really shouldn't read these in the office.

Though I did skim many of the overly-long, overly-BS text message spam pages. Who knows, I may end up reading it again. :P

Then guarenteed, you missed a huge chunk of plot. Even it utter gibberish, Hussie hides so much stuff.

Also, after the recent dave-date, I expect a truly insane amount of fanart to start appearing.
