All of the good visual novels are late to the party.

I watched the live action Akagi, which just speeds through the Washizu arc (well, most of it) in a scant ten hours. Bad news: there's no Zawazawa or big freaky noses. Also, Akagi is played by a 19-yr old scrawny teenager, when I'm pretty sure that Akagi was canonically in his late twenties when the Washizu fight began.
You mean he ended up in his late twenties because the Washizu fight began and is still going, at least in the Akagi manga. Depending on how impatient you feel you could also read the Ten manga, which takes places much later in the Akagi timeline. Akagi was made as a prequel to Ten and to serve as a backstory for certain characters in it. Ten is also complete and fully translated.

Further Fukumoto readings:

Completed
Atsuize Tenma! : pre-Ten, can probably skip
Buraiden Gai : probably his most recent work I'm not a huge fan of, can probably skip
Ikenai Kacchan Love Story : pre-Ten, can probably skip
Confession - this is a good one, read it without knowing anything
Rude 39 : it's about pachinko, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit
Legend of the Strongest Man, Kurosawa : his best series not about gambling, definitely recommend
Seizon - Life : I didn't find this one as interesting as Confessions, can probably skip
Ten - The Blessed Way of the Nice Guy : Fukumoto's first decent work, definitely recommend if you don't mind Akagi spoilers, or just read Akagi first
Gambling Emperor Legend Zero : not as good as Kaiji, but probably worth reading
Gambling Emperor Legend Zero Part 2 : sequel series
Gin to Kin : really good one about gambling, is still being translated as of right now though...

On-Going
Mahjong Legend Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into the Darkness : this is his best mahjong work after Ten, definitely recommend
The New Kurosawa - Legend of the Strongest Man : sequel series to first Kurosawa, definitely recommend
Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji : my favorite of his series, on part 5 now, definitely recommend. The URL is for part 1.

GreatWyrmGold is on there because, as priorly mentioned, he held the number one until he was surpassed less than a month ago.  I think holding onto it that long is worth it.  Heck, I'd be including when Toonyman lost it if I knew when exactly that was.
It was April 21st, 2013. And to be honest I don't know when I started myself.

I'm going to play this when it comes out.

It's okay, you already played the two best routes first.

A friend of mine has also been nagging me to go give Muv-Luv a go, but I've heard it's quite on the tragic side of stories. Downer Endings or just heavy tragedy in general tends to just depress me for a week or two, so I'm not sure if I should read it or not.
Muv-Luv is suppose to come on Steam this summer so you might as well wait a month or two if you are going to play it. I probably wouldn't recommend the entire series if tragedies aren't your thing though... The Steam version will be the updated version that has the latest Age engine so it'll look nicer at least, with widescreen and lip sync. We got some sample screenshots in the Kickstarter activity and they're also on the Steam page now.

I considered that to be included in the "single man with his own place" bit. Although the sex itself isn't really a major focus.
It's all about that hot dice bumping action.  And trying to hunt down those goddamn random scenes for 100% completion.

Playing Tokyo Babel and Root Double concurrently right now, a funny parallel to two years ago with Ayakashibito and I/O. I might have full thoughts at some point.
Sup, Toony?
Going back and trying to finish up unlocking everything in Romanesque.  Hot dice whipping action.
Hi. I haven't played any of the Littlewitch games so I can't say anything about that. The art style is super shoujo though.

I've basically finished Root Double at this point (got the true end) and I've finished one route in Tokyo Babel (the Raziel one). I've actually enjoyed Root Double more than Tokyo Babel at this time, but that might change once I go back to Tokyo Babel.

I've been really meaning to do a write up about the man Nakazawa Takumi, because I've finished six of his games in the last four years and I really want to say something about his works at some point...

Those being Ever17, Remember11, I/O, Secret Game, Root Double, and Rebellions: Secret Game.

So that might happen.

So, anything new worth checking out lately ?
Root Double, Tokyo Babel, and House on Fata Morgana have all released on Steam in the last month or so.

For handheld titles, Zero Time Dilemma is coming out next month on 3DS and PSVita and of course, Ace Attorney 6 will release in September for 3DS.

It's one of a small handful of games where I'm aching and wanting, my wallet is moist and ready, but the creators are simply not interested in giving me the good stuff I'm so desperately desirous of.
me too

I'm very curious how the new Durarararara season plays out, I don't want to get burned by more Kira all day Kira all night Kira all the time.
They add an extra 'ra' each season right? I don't remember the end of season 1 being very good.

Also this Rei had no personality whatsoever, so that's a bad point.

which can only lead me to believe that the VN is actually a psychologically scarring pornfest.
I wouldn't say it's a psychologically scarring pornfest, although both things on their own are true. However, almost (barring one from what I remember) none of the psychological stuff is even related to sex and it's more about other stuff which is relatively interesting to read about. Most of the sex scenes where just Yuuji doing the heroine of that route. I found the backstories for each heroine to be the most interesting part of each route. Especially with their parents, because I freakin' love family relationships and drama in works. This is something I think Yumiko's route had done very well.

The first Grisaia game took me about as long as FSN to read. The common route was way too long, and the heroine routes themselves didn't focus on what I'd like to see myself. The translation itself was super good and one of the main reasons I wanted to read the thing, but what ended up being my other favorite aspect was the main character himself, Yuuji. I find it ridiculous how many harem VNs I've played where the only character I have a huge fondness for is the male lead. Especially in the Makina route, which was my favorite because it focused on Yuuji. My second favorite bit would be Angelic Howl in Amane's route, because while I don't really care for any of the heroines, the huge NVL section in her backstory reads so well I had trouble stopping.

Route opinions:

Makina > Amane > Yumiko > Sachi > Michiru

Heroine opinions:

Yumiko = Sachi > Amane > Michiru = Makina

I'm still pretty hyped to read the two sequels...at some point.
