General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:55:01 pm »
I was in the same fansub group as the primary translator for Mahoyo (and he did some work on fate/hollow too, but by that time, the project was already pretty much dead) and while there is definitely some progress being made, we're still probably 6 months away from a full release. Fate/hollow's been a particularly rocky project -- progress has stalled several times, and I know a few months back there was some controversy where some people were just running lines through Google Translate to artificially raise the completion percentage. I have no idea what the status of that project is right now, but I'd be a little dubious of their figures.

On the other hand, after Mahoyo's finished, the translator plans on going back and finishing fate/hollow and giving it a proper treatment. It might be a while before that happens, but it'll happen eventually.
Soo... you were a part of Mirror Moon, or is Mirror Moon not handling Fate/hollow Ataraxia?
No no, Mirror Moon haven't touched the Type-Moon fandiscs like Kagetsu Tohya and Fate/hollow.  I believe Kagetsu Tohya is by some random guy and Fate/hollow is by a bunch of people over at Beasts' Lair while being hosted on TLWiki as well.

Mahoyo is being done by Commiesubs, the demo was translated by some Russian dude that doesn't really know what they're doing.  He also did Phenomenomo or whatever in English and you could really tell, eugh.

EDIT:
. . . There is a Phoenix Wright live-action movie uploaded with subs to youtube and I am watching it.  Ohhh my god this is ridiculously bad.
Do they have the ridiculous hair and yell OBJECTION a lot?
Yes.  Also, it's strangely compelling.  Like, super-overacted, but very serious and cute, well-timed, all that stuff.
It's actually really good >_<
EDIT: Just finished.  Definitely worth the watch if you like Gyakuten Saiban.  All the actors are very well-casted.
Would this be a good introduction to Phoenix Wright? I've never played/read/etc. anything related to it.
I believe it spoils plot points from the first game?  I would play the games first really.

Hiya, anime thread! VN's get discussed here too, right?
I have been working my way through VN's from the most popular list on the vndb (mainstream ftw! :P), and I was wondering what order I should be playing/ reading the muv-luv series in? Alternative is literally the best rated VN on the site and I wanted to give it a go some day, but I don't want to spoil myself if I end up liking the characters and wanting more :(.
Other than that, any recc's on what I should have a look at? I have read (off the top of my head) all KEY VN's bar rewrite and kanon (fakeedit: oh! and Air); finished Steins;Gate a few hours ago; Saya no Uta was done last week, as was Katawa- and Karano- Shoujo. Hey, it's summer break; I have lots of free time that I should be spending socializing (or so my classmates would have me believe).
Damn you work fast.

Okay, Leafsnail pretty much answered the other stuff but Rewrite isn't actually that bad.  If you could tolerate all of the other Key games you'll probably look at Rewrite as that "really odd F/sn wanna-be", that's not to say every scene is a blast to read either though.  I'd also like to say it's longer than F/sn which is just ridiculous.

Saya no Uta is okay, make sure to check out Hanachirasu and Kikokugai as well.  I especially like Kikokugai.

I would definitely check out Higurashi and Umineko too of course.  And maybe some Higanbana and Rose Guns Days after for good measure.

Fate/hollow and Mahoyo should be coming soon too!

Franken Fran does spring to mind as a manga with legitimately disturbing artwork sometimes, but it's a weird sort of dark comedy series. Definitely NSFW, but also potentially traumatizing for small children.
Claymore also counts, but is a fantasy series. The monsters get progressively more bizarre as it goes along.
Dorohedoro? The main character is a lizardman with a face inside his mouth who goes around biting people's heads and asking them questions.
Parasyte, about aliens taking over people's bodies.
Dorohedoro is very good.  Parasyte is pretty good too.  I haven't read Franken Fran or Claymore yet.

I actually caught up with Onepunch Man last night.  It's pretty good I wasn't expecting a super hero parody even though that should be obvious...I like how all the generics get some sort of detail or treatment even though most of them are bit players.

As for other stuff uh...watched LotGH over the summer (incredibly great), read and watched JoJo over the summer (pretty goooood), read a bunch of manga I've probably forgotten (like Watashitachi blah blah).  I also finished Hoshimemo a few months ago, it's not very good.  Like probably the worst I've read besides Little Busters.

I played a lot of Symphonic Rain and YU-NO waiting for stuff to come out since they're literally the last high-rated VNs in English I haven't touched much of.  I've finished two routes in both before Grisaia no Kajitsu got its patch.

So I'm only like half done with both, but I'd probably want to give my mid-way impressions.

Symphonic Rain - a rather boring, if not sometimes moving story with a really fucking hard rhythm mini-game.  I hear there's some big twists in the true route stuff, but I can't imagine it getting too much better.  It's not that bad though.
YUNO - YUNO is just ridiculous.  It's a PC-98 adventure game (which I've played quite a few at this point *cough* every single Alicesoft one *cough*) with I can't say the most appealing art but the story can be pretty good and I've been spooked at least once a route and that's cool.  My worst compliant is it's way too ecchi with a lot of CGs having panty shots or something retarded.  Everything else is pretty good.  I like adventure games...

Anyway, started Grisaia around the time of the patch (I played the demo last year as I was oddly curious) and well...I don't know.

Grisaia no Kajitsu has many many many many VN traits I do not like.  Akabesoft fall into this too.  Voiceless protagonist, a harem setting, very shiny cutesy graphics, but Grisaia is weird.  I've finished Yumiko's route and I'm quite a ways into Makina's route and by gods what is this being.

The writing/translation is incredible.  I dislike most of the characters most of the time, the art and audio vary between okay and displeasing, the storytelling is usually either non-existent or melodramatic and contrived, but gods be gods the writing man.  I've cried playing both of the routes I've done in Grisaia now.  I'm not sure if that's because I'm an emotionally broken and sensitive person or if I'm in a rut right now and it's picking at my wounds, but every route has impressed me so far with its thought-provoking breakdowns, internal monologues and anecdotes, bizarre happenstances and occurrences.  It's the surrealist thing ever.  You think it wouldn't affect you, but it does and when you explain it to somebody they're like "what the fuck is this shit? sounds dumb lol" and you just sigh loudly.

Welp there's my impression, not sure how it'll change in the coming weeks.

Wait, I don't think ZU has ever pushed NQT harshly, it has been mainly Ottofar from what I'm looking back on.

Yeah really, I don't find Zombie Urist and Lenglon's current votes very genuine.

I should add to my reads that ZU switching to Ottofar after his shit on NQT is ridiculous.  Lenglon isn't too hot either, voting Vector for being wishy-washy while being wishy-washy themselves.

@Vector:
And from my point of view if you have an accusation as vague as "I dunno, you just feel off," expecting anything logical back as the reason for this is incredibly stupid.  It's not based on anything I'm doing.  It's not an attack anyone can defend themselves against, so voting without preparation to lynch on those grounds alone is stupid and noobish, if not scummy.
Yes, I am indeed considering not playing Mafia anymore, but I feel like I should stick out whatever I signed up for.  I have plenty mental reserve to play but I don't have any more patience for this ill-thought-out bullshit.
Then maybe you should refrain from talking about your personal problems during a game, it comes off as an emotional appeal weirdly.  You have all of my sympathies, but avoid the personal stuff I would say.

@Tiruin:
@Tiruin:
You cast a ward on me?  What exactly does that entail?
Also, your wincon is to protect somebody?  Is that me?  I don't like your "I don't mind getting lynched by the town" attitude, but your behavior is odd and contrary.
Ward: Protection from magic and other unholy devices. My use of the verb 'cast' in conjunction to it? Not needed, but just me stating 'I do (x) at you!', more of an 'I wonder what would people react to if I said "cast"'. Just like what a guardian angel would do.
Okay.
...And yes. Protect in the terms of 'I don't want you killed/slain/murdered/tainted/done in/kicking the bucket'.
"And no, I'm not saying who it is. Why are you asking me if I'd say who it is?"
Because I find it odd to cast a protect on somebody who isn't your protect target.
Two things wrong:
> I cast my protect on somebody who is my protect target.
> I don't cast my protect on somebody who is my protect target.
The query was
Quote
Also, your wincon is to protect somebody?  Is that me?
You wonder why I prodded that with partial sarcasm? Think about it.

"Oh yes Toony, you're my protect target. I really did lie in saying you aren't."

>__>
I see.

I do mind my own death, but am unsure on the repercussions. General repercussions, as it would affect everyone involved. The cases against me..aren't understandable, really. Voting people because they're third-party? That's a run-off cause, and needs expounding. Those who are doing such aren't expounding but bringing in a can of spoiled worms: metaknowledge. If you'd like a point, Toaster speaks about third-parties and if they're benevolent, why aren't they town. I answered to my best knowledge why, but the real answer is if you'd ask the mod what he's thinking.
What do you see about the cases against me, ToonyMan? I detect the presence of that 'Even if' which comes off to me as you subtly inserting your doubt on those cases.
Uh well, Toaster is being lazy (I seem to remember them voting NQT for "almost certainly being third-party" and Vector is being even worse.  Your ward on me could be seen as brownie points (buddying), but buddying one person wouldn't really save you.  Toaster has the best case on you with more facts, Vector has the "off-feeling" bit that she used against me in the opposite manner, heh...I think she also said because you're third-party which would make sense.

I wouldn't vouch for your lynch right now though, I don't think you're a witch.

@Dariush:
@Dariush:
A more apt observation would be what are you going to do about it?  How is placing my vote on Ottofar the same as him putting a vote on NQT a week ago?
Have anything else to say about the situation or are you disappointed your mislynch got fucked?
NQT is town because that's the impression I get off him.  I don't see how his concerns are anything but benevolent, if awkward.  He's participating far more than you are too.  PPE: He also seems to be aware of the town wincon which Leafsnail is cursing at.
Why are you sticking with Ottofar so much?  Why would you buddy your own scummate...
I was... of rather higher opinion of you before this post. Apparently, you're just another stupid self-important cretin.
1. It is completely identical: a vote on a lurker without any explanation other than to save NQT's ass.
2. Mislynch. So despite NQT being the embodiment of scumminess for the entire game and you not lifting a finger to dispute any part of my case you simply declare him a mislynch. Did he promise you a fu hug? Or maybe a win for your team?
3. His concerns? Like the part where he declared that Toaster would be guaranteed scum if NQT is lynched? Or maybe the part where he actually asked in huge bold font why we aren't voting Ottofar? Yep, totally benevolent and not intended to save his ass in no way whatsoever.
4. Sticking? Er, no. I don't give a fuck about Ottofar. What I do give a fuck about, however, is that the three scum have voted him for the laziest reason ever ('ermahgard hers luhkin') merely so one of them won't get lynched.
Also, I love how you jumped off Ottofar bandwagon (on which you still jumped for no reason) the moment NQT lost a vote. Deeefinitely a behaviour of someone who wishes to see scum dead.
Something I pointed out last time was your lack of content in your last post, and in your following post here you do the exact same thing.  This is one of the largest reasons I voted Vector and now you're doing nothing but ignoring half of what I'm saying, every other player, and this game as a whole.
I'll repeat myself, but what are you contributing to the game?
Oh, that's an easy one. I already vigged two witches, saved a town cop by protecting him and made a scum-aligned third party lose. Didn't I? Oh wait, indeed I didn't, probably because it is D1 (which is being indefinitely extended by stupid fuckholes like you who are afraid of their little scumbuddy NQT getting lynched, but that's beside the point) and literally the only solid thing that happened so far was Tiruin more or less confirming herself to be third party. Thus, my contribution thus far amounts to voting someone I very strongly suspect to be scum and forming cases on several people I strongly to very strongly suspect of being scum.
Okay.

BTW, nice ignoring of absolutely everything I wrote in the previous post and FoSing me over the one thing I missed. Well, can't say I expected more from a waste of resources like you. Tell me, what are you contributing to the game? (note: defending NQT like he's your baby getting threatened with slow dismemberment doesn't count)
To be fair, you ignored NQT purposely.  I'm not sure I need to bring into question what I'm contributing, it's self-evident.

Overall, I'm not sure at this point.  If I assume Leafsnail is scum (which I'm heavily inclinded to do), that would light up NQT like a match, and I'd throw Zombie Urist and Lenglon in there for good measure as my scum picks.  This is really ignoring Griffinpup, IronyOwl, and Okami though.

The other side I could see is NQT being town, which makes me see Toaster, Ottofar, and Dariush (and Okami but where are they??) in a worse light.  I doubt it could fully be either of these.

None of these scenarios really count Tiruin since they're almost certainly third-party, and they seem to want to protect me so that's quite good in my favor.

For the time being though, I've decided to put my on vote on Leafsnail.  Even if we assume NQT is scum or town Leafsnail is still acting scummy and I'd like to see his full write-up he has planned.

Other worthy candidates for lynching:
Zombie Urist for his case on NQT and poking/jabbing playstyle.
Toaster and (mainly) Vector for opportunistic lynching and Vector is being a mess and using it as an excuse to not being voted which is bullshiiiiit.
Okami's case on NQT was bizarre and he hasn't been here.

Not only that, but I am honestly upset, experiencing things I don't want to experience (employer and housing not getting back to me when they really should, for example, which means that rather a lot is on the line), and I'm getting incredibly frustrated with everyone always thinking I'm scum all the time.  Jesus Christ!  Maybe it was spontaneous!  Maybe I actually got upset at being called "a slimy used-car salesman," instead of using emotional appeal as a technique or whatever the fuck people keep thinking I'm doing!
You're doing it again.

But seriously, if you don't have the mental reserve to play maybe you should reconsider, because in my eyes you could either really be bogged down with "real life" events or you're just being a deceitful scum player, how would I know?  It's one of the largest criticisms I have of Captain Ford's play (who has disappeared lately).

Because I find it odd to cast a protect on somebody who isn't your protect target.

...Why don't you like that attitude? What I'm saying (mostly inferring) that I'm ok with the lynch--people get uppity about this lapse of information and go with their anything at times--but what I'm not ok with is the reasons behind the votes that precede said lynch.
Because a player not minding their own death doesn't make any sense at a game stand-point.  Even if the cases against you were understandable why would you be okay with your own lynch?  I've seen you self-vote yourself in the past and that holds the same tune.

@Vector:
That's a reasonable thing for me to ask, ToonyMan.  Leafsnail has showed up and doesn't feel like scum to me, so I unvoted and asked Tiruin.  Besides... is there any reason we shouldn't speedy quicklynch the third party?
Because a quick-lynch kills discussion and every player can join the anonymous blob of lynching?

Vector: If I had to condense the problem I'm having with your posts, it's that you're spending quite a lot of time and words in tangential discussions with Lenglon and Tiruin, while only touching on fairly superficial points when scumhunting (such as me talking about investigations, NQT's alleged focus on "instead").  It means I'm struggling to tell what your thoughts are on the core issues of the game, such as which people are mafia members.  Who do you think is mafia members?
Sorry I missed this.  I've been thinking about it.
I'm not sure who is, specifically, mafia members.  I'm convinced that Lenglon is town and Tiruin is scum of some sort.  Ottofar and NQT are looking bad, but I keep feeling like there's someone on the sidelines who I haven't caught onto yet.  Something just feels off.
I'm gathering intel, but I'll be arsed if I'm going to do this the high-energy way instead of the detail-focused way.  This group of players hasn't figured out yet just how important wording is so it's a valid hunting technique again, and I intend to save myself the emotional effort.  I can go through and make a big case with lots and lots of evidence, the way this subforum likes, when it's lynching time.  But right now I'm getting data my way.
This is fine.

(I'm very under the weather right now.  I snapped yesterday because I feel like I consistently am called "slimy" or just "off" in these games regardless of my alignment, with no other descriptor or claim, and there's no way to defend against that.  Yeah, your gut is pinging you!  It's pinging wrong, just like it did the last three times.  How am I to prove myself un-wishy-washy?  Your claims aren't specific enough for me to do anything about or even address.
"Nawww, I don't feel slimy to you!"
Etc.)
I prefer you didn't appeal to my emotions, but this seems genuine (though I'll cry and write in my diary if you're a witch).

One of Zomibe Urist's abilities was that people who weren't bullied by him would be unable to see their attacker.  So he couldn't see you, but you couldn't see him.

5595
Unvote Ottofar.

@Zombie Urist:
Also, I'm suspicious of Tiruin and Toonyman, who in case people weren't paying attention have both just claimed 3rd-party. They might still be pro-town, but I know from experience that Tiruin is adept at misrepresenting the aims of a 3rd party role:
Wait no there's a huge misunderstanding.  I'm town.  My character's flavor just wasn't happy with hunting witches (like you can read in the Day 1 start post).
That kind of makes me happy though, the fact you misunderstood that means you're genuinely not scum or you're a devious player.
He misunderstood you so he's not scum? How does that make sense?
I sort of leaped my reasoning there, but why would NQT be suspicious of my possibility as a third-party if he was mafia?  It's a not a connection a scum player would make as quickly I think.  I admit, after thinking it over mafia wouldn't know who are third-party though, however the intention seems to be there.

@NQT:
Toonyman
Wait no there's a huge misunderstanding.  I'm town.  My character's flavor just wasn't happy with hunting witches (like you can read in the Day 1 start post).
Okay well I stand corrected. So you're saying that despite your character's reticence you're wincon is still to see the witches dead?
Yes.

@Ottofar:
Toony
@Ottofar:
@Ottofar:
Look, I tied the votes.  We have over an entire day to deal with this dilemma though so I'm not worried.  I think you're more scummy than NQT.  And unless other people throw their chips in this isn't going to go anywhere.
Good for you. Why do you think so?
I could pick apart this post for adding literally nothing to this game, but let's be easy here.  Your vote on NQT was back from the very beginning of the game and you've just...left it on there.  You've made additional statements yes, but I like sticking my vote on somebody and not moving when I'm scum too.   Also, your main cases have been against NQT and Lenglon, who are both currently voting you.  And your lack of activity that just barely survives the prod time limit is apparent.  I don't feel as confident as a vote on someone I find more scummy, but I'm being adaptive here.  Since in mafia you're playing with other people there's a bit of leeway here.  For example, my vote on Zombie Urist only held lynching power when others were voting him as well.  If I were to switch my vote (though I'd prefer if NQT stays alive) it would be on Vector.
For further investigation, you have a possibility of dying right now, does that bother you?  Who do you think might save you?
I was in a hurry, and I found it easiest to reply to your post. But, to answer. Yes, it has. I nearly took the vote off, but decided against it, as I said. I have my reasons, and I do stand by them. I believe my case on NQT existed before he voted me. And yes, I've been trying to work on a post per day basis, but that clearly hasn't been enough, especially when I'ven't managed it. Sorry about that.
Dying really doesn't. Anyone who thinks NQT is more dangerous to the town than myself might save me.
A reasonable response.

@Dariush:
Errrrm, nope!  I thought you would figure it out which would be kind of neat.  Basically, at the time I had no more ammo left on Vector and didn't want to waste my vote, so what do I do?  Zombie Urist is pretty empty too, but I don't really want to see NQT get lynched.  But then there's Ottofar.  The fact NQT and Lenglon favor town to me probably helps with my decision.  So I put my vote on Ottofar, not only would I be fine with his lynch, but I also tie the vote now thanks to Deathsword bowing out.  Now another player will have to either have a change of heart or an outside player needs to vote NQT or Ottofar.  Thus, another player would have to come up with a reason to vote either NQT and Ottofar.
So... you admit to having no case and forcing everyone else to do your job for you, and additionally engage in a nifty bit of hypocrisy by accusing Ottofar of parking his vote while parking your vote on him. Why do you consider NQT town?
Also, what ZU said about shameless buddying. Though why would you buddy your scummate is another question...
A more apt observation would be what are you going to do about it?  How is placing my vote on Ottofar the same as him putting a vote on NQT a week ago?

Have anything else to say about the situation or are you disappointed your mislynch got fucked?
