It's originally a manga with a live-action adaption.  I've only read the manga, which is 138 chapters currently.

If you thought Death Note was too shonen you should check out Liar Game.  It has a lot of the same elements, but it's more seinen.

I think my favorite part about Puella Magi Madoka Magica is this commercial that plays at the half way point every episode.

Alright so after watching the first three episodes I can really say the story has actually started now.  That was a really good ending in episode three and I can see why people like it so much this last season.  I'll continue to watch Madoka Magica.
