DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Scenarios
« on: May 11, 2008, 04:47:00 pm »
Blood for Armok!

Build a 'temple to armok' of sufficient quality and spill the blood of X dwarves, Your dwarves will go insane one by one untill you reach the required goals...
then their heads will be exploded by a huge demon!       :D

...will require a bit of modding and scripting, if possible at all.

...maybe a catapulot can be used to good effect to get the blood splattered wall decorations that are demanded by Armok.

---
More seriously though, traditionally scenarios are used to highlight specific game concepts, gameplay elements and mechanics in a game.

Goblin sieges are a good example, but so are trading, mining and food/booze production.
Nobles, economy etc.

example:

code:

Military interface - creating and managing your soldiers.
Defend a chokepoint. [say... a bridged underground chasm]

-Your quartermaster recently got into a fell mood and took all your
active army to exact vengeance on a nearby goblin tower.
Nothing has been heard from them since granite when they reported
seeing the demon standing on top of the battlements.
Construction of catapults was in full swing.
Several days later on of the quartermaster's wardogs returns with it's
owner's head tied to it's tail with a xxgiant cavespider silk ropexx.
[The rope is dyed black with sliver dye.
The rope has a crude image in obsidian on it,
the design is of a burning dwarf.
A demon is mocking the dwarf.]
-A goblin army is due to arive in some time,
-You have little time to alter the layout of the defences,
as there are no picks and no loose stone...no trees either.
[no constructions! as they can be deconstructed for stone.]
-There are however a large supply of well-crafted weapons of all types.
-Also all citizens have been forced to spar with the troops by the tyranical
quartermaster and thus all have varying degrees of ability in wrestling.

-Add some hints and suggestions on deployment and weapontypes.

---
The main thing that is needed for many scenarios is a way to have
open source scripts running inside DF, that can track [victory]conditions and affect game objects as well as provide customized interface messages.
But would Toady open up the innards of the game engine enough for such scripts to be viable?

When all dwarfs are dead in an 'invested' fort it is time to quit....
or maybe wait for a fresh wave of imigrants and watch them get slaughtered by whatever has killed the rest...then leave and reclaim.

Otherwise I create shortlived forts to try out new locales or new restrictions on gameplay.

Probably will start messing with mods too in time, but not quite yet.

Also I imagine major version changes will kill many a fort in future.

half my soldiers have damaged lower spines.
one of the risks of training with proffesional wrestlers.   :)

or use upright stone grates or metal bars.

edit: uh. sorry metal bars when used to build turn into a copper wall,
unless yiou use the 'vertical bars' construction.

This map is rather larger than 3x3 I imagine...7x7 possibly.

I'm just getting the hang of things still, but I like building massive irrigation projects and food plantations.

done that now, wanted to give em a nice suit of leather too, so had to economize.
got a nice volcano vent, good topsoil, a stream and a seam of copper-ore nearby.

Best site I ever stated a fortress on.

I'll collect the local ponds into a cave pond for emergencies, then the mining may commence.

I'm planning on starting a 7-miners village....not decided on location yet.

they'd all take picks and start a mine in their basements, a little private house on the surface. (these'd be city-dwarfs going back to their roots)
Other essential skills will need to be sacrificed and undertaken in commune at first, later all other dwarfs will be allocated 'servants'.

Has anybody else had this plan?

I got an empty pond in the middle of my legendary diningroom (thanks to a masterwork copper table), one of my metalsmiths went bonkers trying to find shells for his masterpiece and decided to kill himself by jumping in...
There is no way out for him.
Currently he's stripped himself naked and is rolling around in his own filth, being miserable.
Entertaining to the other dwarves, untill he starts to rot...then they'll probably want him burried or something.
Just hope he won't make any friends while down there...

 :(

I usually just get killed by the first champion I meet as adventurer.
Are normal great Eagles equally terrifying or just horrible?

Just now noticed another of my legendary miners lying all bashed up in the barracks...
no mention of any cave-in...or any attacks...the thoughts just mention a rescue.
I guess it happened at the new well I was digging...removing stairs from the bottom and up seems to be bad. >duh<
Maybe by a savescum I can prevent this tragedy from occuring.
edit: nope. she'd been recuperating for some time now. goblin crud.

Your reasoning, Magus, suggests either that my dwarf was extremely unlucky or that another dwarf is diabolically clever...only the other legendary miner could have timed a murder like this.
These two explanations are so unlikely, I am tempted to declare this an act of Armok.

suspicious facts:
1) this was the very first 'accidental' cave-in in this fort.
2) there was no reason for the miner to be on the second level, which had been completely dug out already.
-Maybe she was lured there with an excuse by the murderer?
3) no other miners were close to the scene, but would have had adequate time to proceed away and come up with an alibi.
-How long does it take a mangled dwarf to die of asphyxiation? Long enough to travel 8 stairs vertically and 20 tiles laterally?
4) evidence agains suicide: the dwarf was happy and had had no negative thoughts for a long time. She had plenty friends, none of them have indicated they knew of any such tendencies in her.

5) Natan Nishdeg, female miner/cook/brewer has admitted to being in a cave-in lately. Although she cannot confirm the timing. Maybe Ustuth had been flirting with her lover...Her character is questionable: nervous, not prone to flights of fancy, rarely happy or entheusiastic, guarded in relationships and is unaffected by the suffering of others. A bit anti-social, but not overtly dwarficidal or excessively jealous.

Good idea!

I already have the alcoves dug out.
Unfortunately, the dwarf has been already laid to rest in the catacombs (a useless section of mined out mountain) I don't know if she can still be moved into a carcophagus...she's not rotten ...yet.

Nothing wrong with her lungs...the mangled neck and smashed skull did the job admiredly.   :)
This was not just a cave-in, but rather an elevator to Armok.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / dig your own grave, dwarf.
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:45:00 am »
I just wanted to share this experience.

I'm still *building*/ digging out that big cathedral chamber.

Upon a recent loading my world I quickly get a message that one of my strong, extremely tough, perfectly agile, legendary miners has suffocated.
This was one of my six starting miners, so its a major set-back.
I investigate all water sources and pits for her corpse but cannot find it.

(a reboot later)
I find my dwarf at the end of a bloody trail on the cathedral floor, all her clothing is xtornx.
She's unconcious and lots of her body parts are in some state of mangledness.
I glance around, but see no enemies or such around, so I investigate further.

In the last entry into her journal she complains about being knocked out in a cave-in.
The next floor above has a single hole right above the "splat-area", the hole is smeared with blood.
I look further up and find that a series of holes is carried all the way to the top floor of the cathedral-under-construction.

The sheriff surmises that the miner was digging the top floor unsupervised and somehow managed to fall with the debris, the floor below has been partially unfloored already so she fell two stories onto the next floor and continued throug collapsing floor after floor to end up at the bottom in a pile of rubble six levels down.
(all lower levels of the cathedral-to-be stil had their floors, which now have a neat hole in them.)

---

Nice piece of programing that.
I was under the impression that cave-ins were turned off for now, but some measure of collapsing can still be had apparently.   :D

---
Dwarfstatistics after impact:
unconcious(white), winded(grey)
yellow(broken): head, upperbody, both upper arms, both lower legs, left shoulder, left hip.
red(mangled): left upper leg, neck
darkred(severely mangled?): right eye, right ear

---
in memoram:
Ustuth "Amazepaints" Endoslogem
daughter of the Romantic Rocks clan,
respected miner and grower.

She leaves behind no lovers or children, Six miner friends will mourn her loss,

May Migrur the Winter of Glaciers welcome her into his icy heart.

---
If possible, we will bury her in a cinnabar coffin inlaid with tiger-eye gems for she loved cyclops so much for their single eye.

Aqueduct is a 'fun' enterprise.
Sewers is my next project, to go under the living areas.

Tombs are fun to make. Start small with burrows, then gradually progress through   mausoleums to pyramids.

build a walled, above ground town from a single material.
